Which ship is the La Habana, due to sail from Nassau to Habana on three and four night cruises, starting November 16th, 2000? I've tried to access their web site at www.cubacruising.com but can't get on line!

LaHabana will sail from Nassau to Havana offering four and five day voyages to Cuba. Canadas Blyth & Company Travel Limited in association with the Cuba Cruise Corporation will be offering the cruises. Americans will be advised that you will not be legally able to buy any Cuban products during the trip. You will not be allowed to spend any US dollars in Cuba. Per person, double occupancy rates start at $595. Hope this helps.

There is no picture of the ship on the website! I'd be very careful! Does anyone know what ship they are using! Looks pretty small ! The accomadations were only on 3 decks!

Blyth & Company's name is highly respected in Toronto and note its Ontario Registration....they stand behind their products.
The write-up is extremely explicit and detailed.
I agree it would be nice to have more details of the ship - you might want to FAX your questions - 416-964-3416.
Please keep us posted.

I have been in touch with them and they will not release the name of the ship. They however told me that the ship was built in 1962,400ft,approximately 10,000 tons and carries 400 passengers.I am guessing it is either of two ships the Odysseus or the Regent Spirit.Feedback would be appreciated.

A press release says it is 400 pax and 20,000 tons built in'62. Could it be the Coast Playa again in Cuban waters?

Costa Playa was built in 1966 as Finlandia for "Silja Line".
The Odysseus and Regent Spirit a built in the early 60's.
I saw the Odysseus in Greece a month ago, there was a lot of paintwork going on at that time. Maybe thats the ship you are looking for

I was just in contact with Blyth & Co. here in Toronto and I got the same answer as Goingplaces. It is 10,000 tons, 400 pax, built in 1960's and refurbished in 1997. The lady would not divulge the name of the ship due to "security reason" and informed me that they wouldn't do this until closer to the first sailing date, November 16th. The cruises will be 3 &4 days. Don't think I want to go on a ship, that I know nothing about. They will send me a brochure, but it is probably the same as is on the internet.

I couldnt find out which ship it is either...if it isn't the ODYSSEUS, which I don't think it is because she has been chartered to a UK outfit, and the former Ocean Pimple, I mean PEARL, later COSTA PLAYA, is inthe Far East, I think it could be the FUNCHAL, a real honey of a ship and one of my favorites...there are a lot of other possibilities, though.

Funchal sounds like a pretty good guess to me beacuse of the tonnage and age.How do you pick a cabin if they dont give you a deck plan? The mystery is killing me because the cruises sound interesting.Any more guesses?

Thanks to everyone for their detective work. I've been trying to find out too but came up with the same conclusions and brick wall of silence from the company. It's a shame that a respected Toronto company think that their cruising base can be so niave about what tonnage is out there, and that there would be a security risk to the ship. Pretty pathetic really.

The ship is the Riviera, former D Juan, ex Crown Del Mar, ex Las Palmas de Gran Canarias which is a converted car/passenger ferry built in 1968 or 1969.

ok - Timber - let us in on your detective work or are you just guessing?. Those of us living in Toronto where Blyth and Co.are located couldn't even find out the name of the ship. They have been very, very, secretive and I cannot understand why.

I agree with timber. I sailed on the Crown del Mar when she was doing 5 day cruises to Mexico from Palm Beach. Size, number of decks and number of passengers sounds about right. Very nice little ship.

Sounds like a good guess to me too. I inspected that ship many years ago before I became an agent.I am trying to dig out my pictures. In fact my boss and I are going to do the cruise in December and also spend a little time in Nassau as well.Who owns the ship now,Royal Hispania? Thats according to Douglas Ward Berlitz Guide.

The photo in the news article is of the Italia Prima (former Stockholm of 1948 which rammed and sank the Andria Doria). In her current configuration she's 15,600 tons and carries 500 passengers. Here's another photo from our review of the Italia Prima...

Here's the link for the complete review - http://www.travelpage.com/cruise/ships/va_prima.htm

according to statistics given by the Cuba Corp the Italia Prima does not meet any of them, age, tonnage, passengers or length.Maybe they are just trying to keep us off-guard.

I would wonder if it was the ITALIA PRIMA. She´s an excellent ship, currently under long-term-charter to Club Valtur as the VALTUR PRIMA. The cruises are very sucessfully sold and I guess they just took a picture to show a ship in general but not mainly the D. JUAN if that´s the one they´ll use.
The D. JUAN is owned by Agencia Schembri which is a subsidiary of the Spanish Transmediterranea. Currently she´s managed by Royal Hispania Cruises but I haven´t heard about that she was renamed RIVIERA. Anyone else knowing some more details maybe ?

I really started the ball rolling here. The conncetion, although it's being denied, between the belly-up World Cruise Company and Blyth, would seem to point the finger at the Don Juan, but I guess we'll all have the sit back and wait. I guess, if they had the money, they could buy the Rembrfant, which I'm sure premier would be more than happy to sell as she's still a good looking ship but only sailing with 300 pax. Just a thought!

I am getting confusing comments re Blyth & Co. see other posting below. I too have travelled with them before and was very impressed by this company. I dont know about the article in the Seattle times. I havent traced it yet, but it is alarming.
