I've been posting to this and several other curise forums for some time now, and it is truly amazing how any thread regarding a man-made piece of floating machinery, the S/S Norway, can elicit such a predictable set of responses.

To anyone who posts questions about the Norway, my stock response is "you will either love her or you will hate her". There just does not seem to be any "middle of the road" regarding this ship.

I am one of those who loves her. Why? I could say it is her charm, 60's decor, graceful lines, quirky stair towers, some of which lead to seemingly nowhere, enclosed promenades, dance floors only riveled by the QE2 or any number of other reasons that have been previously posted.

I can appreciate the negative opinions expressed by others since differing opinions are what keeps us all posting.

That stated, I wonder how many of you consider my opening statement valid? With the exception of Carnival Cruise Lines (not my intention to open a CCL thread here), none of the other lines can fill as much bandwidth as NCL, the S/S Norway in particular.

Wishing you all smooth seas and gentle breezes,

R4

I also think that the Norway is a wonderful ship!

I don't like 1960's decore, thats why I prefer the Norway to the QE2. Let me explain: the QE2 originally had 1960's style decor - lots of pyscadelic swirls and purple. Although she has had many refits, this 1960's style still shows.

On the other hand, the Norway had/has 1920's style decore, like the Queen Mary, even though she was built in the 1960's!

Long live the Norway!

The NORWAY is like none other. It's aged better than me. I can hear GENO-R LOLLOLing right now.
When I read how some can't wait to shelve this liner, it reminds me
of how people feel about their older
relatives. Sure the NORWAY is a floating object, we get attached to
it. But we treat it like a friend, something we want to hold onto. Just
as we should for our older relatives. Do we put them out just because they age? We should'nt, because their experience means alot
to us. It's up to us to look after
them. Should'nt we do the same for
the liners of the past that are still here?

I saw an ad in the Wall Street Journal one day that made me think of the Norway, although it was about a hotel. Something to the effect of "is it possible to feel homesick for a hotel?" I came home and asked R4 if he thought it was possible to feel "homesick" for a ship. He knew exactly which ship I was thinking of because that comes closest to how we feel about her. We're looking forward to our cruise in September on Celebrity's Mercury, and to trying other much newer, "high-tech" ships. But we'll always feel "homesick" for the Norway.

Be it good or bad, the Norway is unique, which most ships are not. That makes her special.

Does anyone know what the latest is on the 2 and 5 day Norway cruises in 2001? There apparently still is no official word from NCL.

Hey Dambrosi, LOL, LOL. My first image and memory of the Norway was this. In 1994 we were sailing out of Miami on the Holiday (not one of our better cruises) and as we sailed past the Norway leaving our berth, the lady next to me by the railing said( as we watch people on the Norway dancing to their band) hey! they're having more fun then we are and were supposed to be on the fun ships! LOL. I always wanted to go on the Norway after that.

Glad to see you laughing from my last post Geno-R. We were on the NORWAY in June 1994. When in June did you go?

QE2 does not look like a ship built in the 60's. There is no trace of purple or swirls any more. The 'trumpets' in the Queens Room have been removed (well most of them) in the 1999 refit and the one in the mid ships lobby works well.

Today the QE2 has 1930's style decor, like the earlier queens, even though she was built in the 1960's!

Hey kruzinkat,

Sure hope you stocked up on Norway
memorabilia when you did the August T/A

Maggie and I loaded up on all of it, because
it's just a matter of time before her final
whistle blows. There is only one Norway, and
there will never be another quite like her.

Maggie,Katie and I feel the same as you and
R/4 we will always have fond memories of her.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

I too will miss NORWAY a great deal, having had 5 wonderful trips aboard her. All were great due in large part to the ship herself. Sure there were a few problem areas on the last sailing, due only to NCL's corportate situation not the vessel, but none significant enough to ruin a wonderful experience. No need to get off her in port, except of coarse to stare back in awe!

My wife and I decided to cruise this wonderful ship this past October because their soon won't be any liked her. She's still maintained well and reminds me of all
the great ocean liners of the past. It must
have been fantastic crossing the ocean in these "floating palaces". I enjoy many of the
features of today's ships, but the ocean liners still have the title for "most class."

Hello everybody,

Many ship lovers seem to think that the career is over for the S/S Norway (at least as a cruise ship). But remember that in 1979 when Knut Kloster bought the dormant S/S France it was viewed in many quarters as an act of sucicidal bravado. The "experts" considered her too big and too expensive to run. Today many experts have taken another standpoint. Here are some examples and there are many more:

The Berlitz Guide to Cruising 1999:

"She is still a majestic looking ship....the recent refurbishment also refreshed her interiors....Like Cunards QE 2, Norway is a floating contemporary resort. This ship should provide fascinating for active passengers and families of all ages".
(Her total score was 1451 to be compared with for instance much younger ships like the Norwegian Dream (1461), Norwegian Majesty (1405) and the sensation (1463))

Travelpage - Ship Profiles (Review by Travel page cruise editor and associate cruise editor)

"Hail to the Norway...we think she is a whole lot better then the France ever was - and she has never BEEN better!....It is simply not possible not to enjoy your time aboard this ship! The Norway has never looked better. The Norway has never been better....and it seems she just get better with age...She may be the only ship we could comfortably reccomend to any person looking for a cruise"

It seems that this ship has a lot more to give.

I would not be surprised if the S/S Norway sails on for many years to come, but perhaps not under the ownership of the NCL.

In the Berlitz Guide to Cruising 2000 there is an interesting statement from the editor about the QE2. I think this statement can also be used for the S/S Norway. "Will she survive the onslaught of the megaships? YES! simple beacuse she is nothing like them".

Regards,
Gripsholm

Hi "Cunard" I saw the QE2's interiors in 1998. At the time she still had some 'ugly' (in my opinion) 1960's features. I cannot comment on her interiors now after her recent refits.

I've never been entirely happy with the QE2's shape either. I think that her sperstructure looks very 1960ish, i.e. curved with an oversized funnel.

Please don't take offence! This is just my opinion. I prefer the look (inside and out) of the Norway. However, I would not deny the QE2 greatness!

As a long time lover of "Le France" I have always been ambivalent about the Norway. No I have not sailed on her, "you can never go home again!"

But the ambiance, the food, the French Crew, the wines. It is my understanding that those who sailed on this great ship in its two incarnations are inevitably disappointed in the "downgrading" of a mighty transatlantic liner to serving the less-demanding cruise crowd. All nights exept pre-debarkation were formal on Transat sailings and there was an element of luxury and formality that could not be captured by the pantsuit and sportshirt crowd.

Yes I am a snob, and freely admit it. Which is why I, relucantly transferred my allegiance to QE2!

And then there is the fact that they pulled out two of their power plants, Hmmm.

The Norway is a classic. She cannot be replaced.
Nathan,
I read on another site that the Norway will switch to 5 - 2 around April of 2001. The person who posted this said that NCL announced this recently at the "repeat cruisers" cocktail party.
Remember, everything is subject to change!

Hi Cambodge, I understand your point about the "downgrading" of the SS France (Norway).
However, the big money is in the expanding market of the Caribean, hence that's where all the biggest ships are cruising! The demand for 'first class' ocean liner travel is not so great. Put simply, are more 'pantssuits' than 'snobs'.

If the France had not been re-adapted for the mass-market, she would still be rusting in Le Harve.

On a final note, you will be aware that the QE2 is a three class ship. I understand that If you stay in the lowere grade of cabin the food and service are not as high as in the Queen Grill (upper grade of cabin). So even the QE2 has 'downgraded' its services.
