Orient Line...with the second ship Crown Odyssey starting next week will have the best itineraries, the best size ships with happy crews giving good service and food at a reasonable price. Hard to beat. They have 2 excellent brochures out now, one for Europe and the other the world.

Celebrity Cruise Lines!
They have some new ships coming out and the ones they have already are nice.
The NEW thing this line is doing , is making ships that are more environmental friendly.
I agree about NCL. They can just keep their FREESYLE cruising.

I second that motion on Celebrity.
Freestyle, no way. Younger markets?
Better get good security then!

gohaze..Celebrity's new ship Millennium, due to make her debut in July, is the first cruise ship to incorporate gas turbine propulsion, which reduces exhaust emissions by 90 percent!! They say their new Millennium class ships will be the most environmentally friendly cruise ships in the world. I think it's a good start to a serious problem. Think of all that black smoke that spews into the air out of the cruise ship smoke stacks YUCK! I hope all the cruise lines use this system in their new ships as well. We will be going on the Millenium in Jan.

Hi...if the ships machinery is being properly maintained and operated by competent engineers - evidently something in short supply in RCI - then you should not be getting the smoke you object to, unless the company is also being cheap in buying fuel. Carnival is going over to a new type of Diesel engine developed in Finland and P&O/Princess are also going to partial gas turbine. However that doesn't eliminate pollution - watch a jet take off sometimes.
The worst pollution is the stuff you don't see.

Seabourn still maintain traditional yacht style cruise ships.

Cunard still maintain traditional British style ocean liners.

Both Lines have great ships, itineraries, service and reputations

I thought P&O/Princess also seemed to be a good line for service but it appears that their standards are dropping?

There are several good cruise lines: Crystal, Cunard, Orient, Radisson Seven Seas, Seabourn, Silversea, and Windstar. Most are higher priced than NCL, Celbrity, Princess, etc. But much more is included in those higher prices: service, room, wines and tips in some cases, and best of all, wonderful and varied food. Try 'em, you'll like 'em!

Sorry to say......

I have seen things slipping on Crystal as
well as some others. Before the change to
Seabourn, RV Sun was slipping too. I still
liked Vistafjord before the change to the
Caronia....I am eager to see how she is
now.

I hear good things about the Deutschland,
but have yet to try her.

NAL - I think Seabourn Sun was slipping because she really needed the refit Cunard Line has just given her.

A friend who just got off Caronia said she is better then ever.

If the general theme here is that service IS slipping it's liable to become worse.

With more ships cruiseing than ever before the lines are having a great deal of trouble adequately staffing and training them.

To make matters worse, there are 60 ships, almost all MEGALINERS going into the water in the next 5 years. More Milleniums at 85,ooo tons, more Grand Princesses @110,000, (I think I just read that Princess contracted for a (heaven-forbid) 150,000 ton ship), more Destinys @ 102,000, more Voyagers @ 142,000 etc..
Where will all the qualified, capable, courteous personnel come from?

Try the smaller lines too ! Some are really secret hints are are excellent. If lines are not so big, have less ships and smaller ships, they care much more about details.
I have been for example on the ASTOR last month and they´ve got the best certificate a ship can ever get about their security standards. The crew has not an easy job during a life-boat-drill but they do it perfectly. I saw how good they were organized and how fast they had everything ready. An excellent job !
Personally I prefer lines such as Orient Lines, Starline Cruises / African Safari Club, Dolphin Maritime Ltd., Peter Deilmann Reederei, Sovcomflot / Phoenix Seereisen / Transocean Tours, or Radisson Seven Seas Cruises.
Of course, lots of others are good as well and also the Megalines are not as bad but for my personal taste the best ones are the small ones.

There are many ships out there that I like
very much.....however, I have been an HAL
regular since the early '50's and I still
think they offer the most for the dollar.
I think the Statendam sisters are hard to
beat and I like Rotterdam VI very much too.
I will be trying the Volendam over the
summer and the the Maasdam for a New England
Canada cruise in the fall.
