Ascendancy, how did I know you would agree with that statement?

Personally, I think it is disgusting to generalise those less that 18 on ships. I mean, who the hell has the right to put every single person under that age in that category? There are too many people have been stereotyped for too long and had to suffer for it, and I know how this feels as I live in Northern Ireland, and I know that there are people on this forum who feel the same way. It makes me feel physically sick.

Okay, it is true that there are many "petits merdes" who go on cruises and do not deserve to be there. But then again, there are plenty of older people who believe that they have the absolute right, sorry, duty, to be pains in the arses and make life miserable for everyone else. Do they deserve to be on cruises making vacations unenjoyable for many people? And what about "lager louts" who plan to get drunk for two weeks and be obnoxious? Do they deserve to be there?

certainly, have certain cruises which are strictly over-18 or whatever, but do not even dare suggest making every cruise out-of-bounds for people who deserve a great vacation. Many kids work damned hard these days for exams etc, and deserve as good a holiday as any brain surgeon or professional golfer and what have you. I do believe that, like with several airlines, cruise lines should have a blacklist which stops unruly passengers, of any age. But the mentalaity of "Kancel Kids 'Kause..." is really obtuse. Ageism is as serious as racism etc., and please do not lower yourself to thinking like that. would you rather share your table with a pleasant and polite 16 year old, or an obese obnoxious 56 year old?

Your topic really got me going again. Yesterday I found out the cabin next to ours, on our next cruise, is going to have a baby in it. I'm really thrilled! I can just see me sitting on my verandah having coffee and listing to the baby.

How come you know theres a baby in the next cabin.
I'm biased as a result of recent bad experience. Personally I believe that couples should take their hormones to sea instead of their kids.

Lets see, no kids under 18 on a ship? Then I would not see my kids have the pleasure of one of the nicest family vacations availible, not see my kids face light up when the first officer showed him how to use a sextant ect. ect. You old farts that continue to complain about this are probably the same pain in the asses that go to school board meetings to complain about having to pay school taxes, but it was alright for the senior citizens, at the time, to pay school taxes when YOU had kids in school! Thanks for getting me going, now I need a BIG RED BOAT cruise to cool off.

Topgun,
I found a group with a great price. They posted on their site who is in what cabin. There was an update yesterday saying how many had booked and it mentioned 2 on the way. I checked the cabins and saw they had a little stick man listed for 2 particular cabins, one being next to ours. (There were about 45 cabins booked, 1 had a third person and 2 had the little stick men.) My husband refuses to change, he has a thing about cabin numbers and says if we change it could get worse. I do not understand why people want to bring infants with them.
I agree with your hormone comment!

If you do not care to sail with children, I would suggest that you cruise on Renaissance--they do not accept anyone under 18.

My husband and I do not have children; therefore I do not think we would ever sail on Disney Cruise Lines; however, we have met some of the nicest, cutest, and most polite children aboard some of our sailings on other ships. I agree that spoiled, whiny children are a thorn in one's side, but I have encountered on ships a number of whiny, spoiled brats who happen to be over the age of 30.

Even though I had a horrendous experience with kids on the Voyager, I really don't think you need to take such drastic measures.
My kids are grown but I still have sailed on the Big Red Boat and the Disney Magic and had a wonderful time, even though they were loaded with kids. What the cruise lines need to do is limit the number of kids on each sailing and also have the parents and kids sign a contract that spells out all the rules and regulations and states if the child does not adhere to these then they will be put off the ship at the next port. Carnival does it with smokers on the Paradise (they even fine them!).

After the Voyager, our worst cruise was on the Statendam, where the average age was at least 75 (old and cranky 75). Not a fun group. Even the two couples we ate with (probably in the 65-70 bracket) complained about how cranky and nasty the majority of the people were. So it doesn't necessarily have to be kids to ruin a good time. Our Statendam cruise was about 6 years ago and we haven't been back on HAL since then and it will be sometime before we condsider going back on RCI.

With today's ships spanning 14 decks and higher, It's hard to believe you can't escape children. I don't know about you, but being around kids makes me feel young! If your're unlucky to have a noisy neighbor on board, why blame it on kids? I've had many more older people act rude or unkind than children. You can find unkind and uncaring people in all age groups,so get a grip and judge people one-on-one,not as sterotypes )

cruznut6 - I know it sounds crazy but even on the Voyager we could not get away from these unruly kids - they were in the spa, in the hot tubs, in the casino, in the bars, in the shows, in the Viking Crown Lounge, in the dining room, at the buffet, we couldn't even get away from them when we went to our cabins because they were screaming and running up and down up and down up and down the halls!! There was NO ESCAPE!!! Believe me if I could have found somewhere where they weren't I certainly would have been there!

I do agree, you can't lump all kids in one category - but having our vacation ruined by a group of them I certainly would prefer a ship without kids.

Wow...what a hot topic!

While I don't have children (and never will) I agree that it's not necessarily the kids that make the cruise bad. IT's the PARENTS that don't know how to parent properly or take the attitude that they're on vacation so the kids are not their responsibility.

My folks could never afford to take me on a cruise vacation when I was growing up. I've now had several opportunities to travel with them as an adult though which has been as much fun for them as it has been for me. I can still recall their expression when boarded our first "Superliner" with a soaring atrium. There were no words to express the looks on their faces.

I tend to be center of the fence on this issue. I choose to cruise in the fall when MOST kids are in school. There's always the families that take their kids out of school to vacation (my folks would never have dreamed of doing that). I've seen kids out of hand on a cruise and yes I've seen obnoxious adults too. Kids need and should be controlled by THEIR parents, unfortunately that's not what our society dictates today. Seems like kids and parents just do their own things and many go their own ways. I think all cruise lines could implement policies on standards of conduct and believe an adult should be the overall responsible party.

Anytime you get 1000, 2000 or 3000+ people together it's hard to set the standard because we all have different thoughts and beliefs on what's right and what's wrong.

A screaming child in an evening show should IMMEDIATELY be taken out! A loud obnoxious drunk should be quarantiened to their cabin until they sober up. Unfortunately we will continue to see these problems and there's not much anyone can or will do about it.

Just my thoughts......

I would just like to make a comment on this subject. My wife and I have three children all grown and out from 25 to 31. When they were young WE took complete responsibility for each of them no matter where we were. That included discipline and even leaving an event if thats what it came to.
It seems to me that people today don't want to take resopnsibility for the actions of thier kids or themselves.
We are now raising my 5 year old grandson, and we apply the same rules to him as we did with our own.
I agree with cruiseman, it's not the kids
it's the parents.
On our last cruise in April on the Horizon there were several kids all well behaved. I wish I could say the same for the adults, we had one man who was constantly drunk, loud and obnoxious. This again goes back to people taking responsibility for themsevles and those they are in charge of.
I don't think I would like to go on a cruise loaded with kids because it is a time for my wife and I to get away and relax but at the same time a small group who are well looked after has never been a problem.

I've read all the above replies and let me first just say that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and we should always be respectful of another. My opinion is this. My husband and I have always taken our two children with us on cruises. My children are now in their late teens. Not once would I ever tolerate misbehavior on their part. Our vacation was always a family vacation, and that meant to be tolerable of each other. We have always enjoyed their reactions to new adventures and new places. Not only was it a time for family bonding but it was also very educational for them and fun for us. There is no vacation place where I can't take my children for fear they will either embarrass me or not no how to act. It is the responsibility of the parent to make sure of this. I remember when we were on one cruise and my children noticed a few unruly children on the ship and their comment to me was "Mom, some people just don't know how to act" - this comment came from my children. There were also times when a few adults became obnoxious and again the comment from my children were "They need to be ashamed of themselves". My children are not angels, nor are my husband and me, we like to have a good time - but that does not mean at someone elses expense. Children are just that CHILDREN and you should not expect them to act like adults (even though I've seen a few adults acting like children) Just as I - as their parent have the responsibility as their parent and all that entails. I think if everyone were more respectful of others (adults and children) everyone could have a good time (fantasy!) I just always take responsibility for mine and we always have a good time together on cruises. That is my opinion - and I believe a vacation (no matter where) is what you make of it.

Same old topic with the same old responses...

I'm with Sailing...the choice is already available...cruise with Renaissance.

I first cruised when I was ten. What a magical experience it was. It began a fondness of ships and travel that I plan to share with my kids.
