Has anyone sailed on the Edinburgh Castle? I believe she is now completely refitted and sailing as the Big Red Boat 4, am I right? As the Edinburgh Castle, she was plagued with problems. Everytime she sailed there were reports of engine failures, squalid conditions, a fire on board and passengers with Legionnaires Disease. This was when she belonged to Direct Cruises. Their other ship the Apollo was'nt much better either. They got rid of her also. Too many Law suits against them I expect.

Sadly, even after what was stated to be a full technical refit and full refrubishment, the ship is still plagued with mechanical problems and squalid conditions from malfunctioning and non functioning toilets, a non functioning HVAC system and pipes that are constantly bursting.

When she sailed from NYC last night (LATE!!), she was accompanied by tugs and was belching thick, black plumes of exhaust.

The only thing I can say about:

She was just the perfect ship for Costa Crociere. True Italian ambiance, real good Italian food, friendly Italian service, not a too large ship but big enough to feature all you need for an excellent Mediterranean cruise...
Costa did well wrong to give just this beautiful liner like she was, as a deposit to Cammel Laird Yards. Too bad...

I agree with tim and Peter. The ship has had her day. I thought after she changed her name and was refitted and sold on, that she would be sailing the seas in a better state than before, but she seems to be as bad as ever. Where is the Apollo? If she sailed recently belching black smoke, what name was she sailing under?

Hi...according to an E-mail on another bb she is broken down again and they're hoping to return to New York tonight. Gadani Beach is the only place for her....peter

Brenda...last I heard the Apollo was tied up in Piraeus looking rather sad.

I´m sorry but I don´t agree about scrapping the EUGENIO COSTA. Several other examples showed that there can be made some very beautiful and safe ships out of classic liners. One perfect example is the MARCO POLO. Another good example is MAXIM GORKIY or even the CARONIA.
They were all build between 1960 and 1970 and are still fantastic ships.
The EUGENIO would be still a great ship if not Lowline and now Premier would have tried zo save money on the wrong side to "refurbish" this ship. As well the OCEANIC saw much better days once and could still be a great ship. Not to talk about the REMBRANDT...
Well, it´s all a matter of taste and the real handeling but also a classic ship can become a real beauty if it is done the right way !

Patrick...as I said, sentiment doesn't operate a ship. If you want to keep an old ship going you have to be prepared to spend a LOT of money. The Marco Polo was literally just about gutted right out. The hull is ice-strengthened and therefor a lot better built than a normal ship, the steel is better quality too, the engines are Sulzers and not the high-speed run to the max type. She has all new wiring, plumbing etc and was basically a new ship when finished. So, A LOT of money spent there... sorry, not a good example.
The ex Eugenio on the other hand was a lightly built ship in comparison, she's 34 years old, a steamship with problem boilers, the little bits are falling apart, and all the patching in the world is'nt going to help.
To be honest, if a proper survey was carried out, there would be so much to do, she would never carry a passenger again....peter.

Patrick......

A small correction.....the Caronia came into
service in 1973.....not between 1960-1970.
A small point, but an important one.

If she still carries 1,597 passengers, that makes her a pretty 'high density' ship.
(Although, this is typical of a 2/3 star budget cruise ship).
