I am curious to see what you think about having internet access at sea. I have noticed many cruise lines now offering it, and wanted some feedback, if you think it is a good idea, and if any of you actually use it, if so, what is the primary function you use the internet while on a cruise for...?

Thanks...

I think it is a wonderful idea and have used it on numerous cruises. It is a great way to keep in touch with home and you don't have to wait on a phone in port.

We used it to communicate with our children (12 & 9 years old) who were staying with my parents and then with some neighbors. I had them send daily e-mails to my home address and then I used www.mailstart.com to access my home e-mail remotely.

On the Zaandam, HAL automatically gives you a temporary e-mail address that is combination of your name and cabin number but charges you $3.95 to send/receive e-mails. I avoided this charge using mailstart.com but they do charge $.75/minute to be logged on.

I perceived this service to be a very valuable resource which would have been even better if they included the use of a printer. There was a printer there, but it was used only for printing receipts for charges.

Scottylass (Aurora) and several other 'Cruisetalkers' have posted messages on this forum while at sea!

Email is a useful feature.

It depends on what kind of holidays you prefer to have...
Some people prefer to have their holidays away from everything which remidns them of everyday life
One the other hand some others do not..
The decision is yours!

I think internet access on cruise ships would be great to send e-mails back home but they are too expensive- doesn't sound like much but that 50-75 cent a minute charge adds up fast. What we do is fine an internet cafe when we go ashore. They are easy to find all over the world. We was in SE Asia and found them at every port. Usual charge was $1.00 for anywhere from 10 Min to 30.

When I was in Civitavecchio(Rome) in May this year, I used an Internet Cafe near the railroad station. The hour I spent retrieving and sending emails cost me 10,000 lire(sp?)or approx.$5 US.

I would say that the cost of using these terminals on shore vary, depending on what part of the world you are in. It is very cheap in Indonesia due to the low value of the rupiah whereas in parts of Europe it can be scandalously high.

To be honest,I don't know if I will avail myself of going on-line in August when I board the ROTTERDAM.It might be cheaper to go ashore somewhere.

When I was on the Royal Princess last month, I got connected. It is very expensive, though ($7/15 minutes). They only have a few hours that the desk is open. I heard that it was very crowded. When I went, it just opened. I only had to wait 15 minutes because there are only 2 computers.

The Carnival Triumph has a wonderful internet station, just outside of the Oxford Lounge -- It had about 15 high speed machines (with flat screens), and was never crowded. Fees were steep -- 15 cents a minute, but it's still cheaper than a telephone call.
