I have a friend who wants to cruise but her husband says the only way he'll go is if he does not have to put on a suit and can be totally casual the whole time. Ship should have a casino... Any suggestions?????

Tell your friends to go on a gambling ship
or boat, or as an alternative a trip to Las
Vegas, Reno, or Atlantic City.
I think there are some gambling ships/boats
on the Mississippi.

You can be totally casual on any cruise line. As long as you don't wear jeans or shorts in the dining you can wear what you want. Most ships have alternate dining, so you don't even have to go in the dining room. I don't worry about what I wear as long as I'm neat and clean. We have been on 10 cruises and even on Holland I've seen women in pants and men in sport shirts even on formal night. Don't worry about it. It is your vacation and cruises aren't cheap, so just enjoy yourself. You will probably never see the people you meet, so why care what they think!

We like to dress up, but sadly, cruise liners are becoming less formal.
Give it a couple more years. The formal will go away forever.

Carnival and do the alternative dining on the formal night if he won't even put on a tie and sports jacket

He is just being a kill-joy! I assume that he dresses up for his Jobs, Interviews, Weddings and Funerals? Cruise ships only require smart dress for the evening meal - what is so unreasonable about that?

Just about all ships have Casinos these days. The biggest ships tend to have the biggest ones.

He sounds like the sort of guy that would love a cruise, if only you can get him to go!

Try NCL's Freestyle. Not too sure about the exact dress code, but it has gone more casual. Then there is always VOTS and Johnny Rockets!

Just read in Ocean Cruise News about NCL's "Freestyle Cruising" on the Norwegian Sky. This is just what you want. No formal nights, no dressing up. Those who wish to dress up may take advantage of one dining room, one alternative restaurant and one lounge set aside for passengers in formal wear
Dining rooms open between 5:30pm and midnight. Tables not assigned, so you can choose your dinner companions and may request tables seating from 1-20 each evening.
This definitely is not for me but will no doubt suit some people.
Have fun!

Windstar cruises or one of the sailing boat cruises would be suitable as they are informal.

Most of the big brand cruise lines...Carnival, NCL, RCL, Princess you don't have to dress up if you choose not to.

When I go on vacation I like to be casual. My life is casual...I wear business casual to work, I hate the feeling of wearing a suit and tie...especially when the temparature is 100 degrees outside.

I do enjoy having the OPTION of being able to dress up for 1 formal night but that's enough for me. Always rent a tux from the ship and I feel it's well worth the money. Great opportunity to have an updated picture taken for my parents.

Go and enjoy...the cruise lines cater to ALL. If you want to be casual on the one or two formal nights you choose to attend...eat alternatively or have room service delivered.

Great suggestion....I am with you on this
one. You and I can stick with HAL.

DianaD......
Windstar is not suitable for those into
gambling.....nor are the Barefoot Cruises.

Bonny: I've been quoting your post to my husband about the dinner attire since this will be our very first (RCCL) cruise. He and I are both casual people in our daily lives, so we are sort of stressing over the expected dress code, especially for the "formal" night.

Frankly, I'd rather where something involving pants, but I could wear a dress too so I don't feel too out of place. Can you give me an example of what you've worn to both the formal and the casual dinners? Also, on formal night are you expected to stay dressed in that fashion after dinner too, like to the casino or theatre, or can we change into our jeans for that? Thanks so much.

Nan

Nan,
If you have a dressy pantsuit, wear. On casual nights, I wear skirts and blouses, But slacks and blouses are fine too.
We don't stay dressed up all night. We change right after dinner. RCCL is a pretty casual cruiseline. Dress in what is comfortable to you. NO shorts or Jeans in the dining. Just relax and have fun.

Thanks so much Bonny!

You've been a big help to us. We have a much better idea of what to wear for both types of dinner now. Thanks again!

Steamboat Willie,

My husband and I dread the formal wear too. We have to dress up every day for work, so its not "vacation" for us! For formal nights, I have a simple black dress that I wear. (It's a dress I wear to work all the time, so it's not too dressy at all, but its totally fine for the ship.) We always change right after dinner, too. Most people do, I think.

We would love to try one of the Windjammer Cruises, where a bathing suit is the most formal you need to be, but I'm really concerned about getting sea sick on them. (I take prescription drugs for the regular big mega ships, and can still tend to get sick, so I don't know how I'd do on a smaller sailing vessel.) But, you certainly don't have to be formal at all on these types of ships. But NAL is right, if you want gambling, these ships are not for you.

My suggestion would be to try one of the ships that has extensive "alternative" dining options. Then you could have the casual attire and the gambling.

VOTS is great because you have a number of casual dining options to choose from. So, you can be casual in the main dining room most nights, and for the formal nights just plan to eat at elsewhere: Portofino's, Johnny Rocket's, the Windjammer, or that restaurant in the Royal Promonade (I can't remember the name.) There are PLENTY of casual choices.

Hope this is helpful....

Thanks Laura!

I have a plain, sleeveless, scoop neck, black velvet ankle-length dress, and I'm hoping that will be suitable for the formal night. My husband wants to wear his black dress slacks, a dark charcoal-colored sport jacket, w/ dress shirt and tie for the formal night. How's that sound for either one of us?

We get such mixed opinions about this, that we've been stressing more over this dress issue than anything else about the trip, and frankly, I should really be using this energy stressing over how I'm going to look in my swimsuit. LOL

I guess what I'm after is having us not stand out like a sore thumb compared to how *most* of the other diners on the cruise are dressed, yet not having to feel compelled to dress like we're going to the Academy Awards either--not that there is anything wrong with that--it's just not us, and like you said, especially when we are on vacation. We just want to fit in with the crowd, and be dressed in "acceptable attire". Hopefully, we will be. Thanks so much for your input.

Nan

Steamboat Willie.
The attire for both you and your husband sounds good, and after 20 years of cruising I can guarantee that you will feel in tune.
The formal evening is no great trial with one person trying to outdo the other.
Enjoy yourselves.

Hi Steamboat willie I agree with topgun. Once you are on the ship, you will feel so relaxed that when the "dress up nights" come around you will be in the mood for getting dolled up and joining the fun. My husband and I are not dress up types but we loved it we really felt that it made an exciting night out. So stop stressing out about this and relax and look forward to your trip.

Thanks topgun and hooked on cruising! I appreciate your comments. I'm glad you both agree that my husband and I finally have this part of the trip covered. Hence, my stress factor has been reduced enormously.

Now I'm spending my time researching things to do and see at our ports of call; Nassau, Coco Cay, and Key West. Thanks again for your input.

Nan
