If you are planning to cruise after April 2001 with Holland America please be aware they have changed their Cancellation policies -- both Standard and Platinum Insurances. No longer will they return your money (see 2001 brochures),and I would also check with your TA as he/she might not be aware of these changes at time of booking. Do not put down any deposit until you have investigated their new policies for cancellation insurance -- and recommend you take other travel insurance at this time.
Would be interested to know how others feel about this change as time goes on.

Liz,
I always take insurance. Guess I will have to look elsewhere for future cruises. Why is HAL doing this?

Always take travel insurance from an independent company, not the travel provider. If the provider fails financially you are out of luck both ways. Also it's often less costly from an independent.

James, I too purchase from an independent, but only because of price and HAL's lack of medical. However, I'd venture that Carnival is a lot less like to close up shop than the great majority of the independent travel insurers.
BTW, I just received HAL's 2001 Europe brochure for Mariner members. They still offer CPP insurance coverage, and at the old rate (4%)

Independent travel insurance is often 50% cheaper! Never take the cruise lines!

Stevensan,
Yes the rate of HAL CPP Insurance is still the same, however, read on Page 75 of the 2001 Europe Brochure to see how the insurance refund has changed. You NO LONGER will be refunded your money. Read carefully and ask your TA for details.

Hi LizB......

I have always taken "third party" insurance
and I think it's much the best way to go.

What third party companies do you recommend? How do you contact them? Do they have to be purchased within a certain time frame? Do you get your money back if you cancel the cruise in time that the cruise line would still give 100% refund?

In most cases we do not recommend taking the insurance out when it is within the period where if the cruise is cancelled there is a 100% refund.

Two good travel insurances seem to be Travelex and Access America...your Travel Agent should be able to recommend something to you.
Also, if you have a "prexisting condition" both of these insurances will waive this if you sign up for the insurance within a certain number of days after deposit to the cruise line...either l0-days or l4-days.
Check it out with your TA! Otherwise you don't have to sign up till time of final payment.

A P.S. to my above post. Yes, your money would be refunded to you if cancelled for a valid reason.

Checkout Universal Travel Protection at www.utravelpro.com

This is a primary insurance. You do not have to check your homeowners insurance or any other before this insurance will kick in. The others mentioned above may be secondary.
