I will be arriving in NYC around 1:00 and the ship loads at 3:45 (I think). Anyone know if there is anything to do/eat/toilet at the Passenger Terminal? I was there once, but was (and still am) too much of a hayseed to notice anything except that it was a big building. Lacking that, I will have lunch at the Port Authority Bus Terminal and, for the second time in my life, take a taxi to the pier. Unless someone has any suggestions.

As I said, I fell off the hay wagon in my late thirties and Wilkes-Barre is still a big city to me. Honest. I know, it sounds funny to you city slickers.

Tom - there is nothing at the pier - I think someone complained that they couldn't even get a cup of coffee. If you get in to NYC at 1pm, head straight for the ship and I am sure they will be boarding when you get there. The terminal is a huge cavernous room and chairs will be set up for you to sit and wait.
You don't have to have lunch at the bus terminal. There will be a full buffet on the Lido deck and you can eat to your heart's content.
There are bathrooms there and there may be a pop machine, but I can't remember. A couple of years since I have been there also.
I believe that you said you were on the Maasdam. Say hi to Henk the Chief Officer for me - nice guy. Have a wonderful cruise.

I thought he left the company a few years ago -- if you're speaking of Henk Brok. Then, again, there are probably any number of Dutchmen named Henk. The one I knew was a great guy, really personable, knew how to work the crowd. A credit to HAL.

It's a easy ride there and safe parking at the pier is 18.00 a day.

Unless they've done unpgrading over the past year there's little comfort at New York Terminal - washrooms yes. It's a cold and drafty place. Board as early as possible and enjoy the Lido!

Happy cruisin!

tomc...most of the time the embarkation begins by 2:00 in New York. Your itinerary may say 3:45, but I don't believe it!

You could also do what we do when taking the bus to NY for the ships...pack a sandwich that you can eat on the bus...that will hold you over until you get to the Lido. Don't know how long it takes you from PA but for us it is a 5-hour trip so we are hungry by 11:00.

Have a great cruise!

You could always cruise the area bars and look for chaplains!!! JK (for "just kidding")
Had a Holy Land trip cancelled the other day and I got a last minute deal on the Dawn Princess out of San Juan this coming Saturday. At least I will still see palm trees. Have a great trip.

tomc,

Just as some of the others have said, you'll probably be able to board early. If not though there are a couple of things to do in the immediate area. The Intrepid is one as mentioned, plus there's a nice little park down the water front where you can take a walk. You can walk or grab a taxi and head down FDR Dr. (the street the pier is on) and go to the Twin Towers or a block or two further is Battery Park. This is where the ferry leaves to take you to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. You won't have time to go to the Statue but the park has lots of vendors ( have one of those great NYC hot dogs with saurkraut and forget lunch at the bus terminal)and street preformers. There are also a couple of museums in the immediate area and it's only about a 5 minute ride from the pier. South Street Sea Port is also right down in that area. Try to get into the city as early as you can. Drop your luggage off at the pier (I'm assuming you can, although I've never sailed out of NYC) and play tourist for a few hours. There are so many fun things to do.

This is all so fresh in my mind because we were there this past weekend and we did take a little cruise. Our ship was a bit smaller than most, it was the ferry to Liberty Island. You know, it doesn't matter the size of your ship, when you look at that statue from the middle of NY Harbor it's still pretty awesome. I can only imagine the emotions those people felt 100 years ago.

While we were on Liberty Island I did see a couple of cruise ships leaving port. The first ship was the smaller Seaborne Pride. An odd thing happened though. About halfway out into the harbor she just about did a piroette. Granted, she's not a mega-liner but she's not tiny either and it was pretty impressive to see her turn on a dine like that. My husband and I figured someone became ill or someone was left behind but after she made that sharp about face it looked as if she was heading up towards Queens instead of back to the dock. Does anyone have a clue as to what might have happened?

Right behind her was a Celebrity ship. Unfortunately,I couldn't see her name, but this ship was "cruisin". I was pretty amazed that she was going so fast considering the harbor was very crowded. There were lots of sail boats, small motor boats, a ditz in a cigarette boat and lots of other smaller water craft like wave runners. It just seemed like an accident waiting to happen to have a ship that large going that fast with all of the congestion around.

We had a great show and luckily no one got flattened. Unfortunatley our little cruise ended too soon and it now makes April, when we go on our Panama Canel cruise seem so very far away. I can't wait!!

I'm still unpacking (7:42pm E) from the trip, but did want to thank people. The taxi rides were good; I didn't know what to expect. I got to the pier, stood in line and got onboard around 2:20, I guess.

When I disembarked, I had #16 ticket. I didn't want to hang around, since all I was going to do was get a taxi back to Port Authority Bus Terminal. So I went to the gangway and told the Social Hostess that I wanted to get off and catch a bus. No problem. I beat the taxi rush, was one of the first out of there with my bags.

Now I'm unhappily at home, wondering why no one took the dishes off the table as soon as I put my silverware down. And, so far, nobody has turned my bed down.
