I know this line is now under a
different name. I have tried to
see if they could send me postcards of their remaining older
vessel. But they are a most unfriendly company.

Hi Dambrosi - I think they only have one other ship - either the Contstitution or the Independence. Believe one of them was sold. If you do go on one of their cruises go on the "Patriot", new name for the Nieuw Amsterdam. It's newer.
Did you try looking them up on the Internet. I will see what I can find out from my friend in Honolulu.

American Hawaii has only one ship and that is the Independence. The Constitution was turned into scrape a few years ago. The Patriot (HAL ship) goes into service in Dec. They are also building two new ships, I believe due out in 2002 and 2003. I may have a postcard of the Independence, I need to look around for it, will let you know in a day or so.

In regard to the MS Patriot, she is to fly the American flag and travel within the Hawaiian Islands.

I thought a ship flying the U.S. flag had to have its hull built in the U.S.. Is this correct?

Where was the Nieuw Amsterdam built?

Obviously not. She was built in France - Chantelier de l'Antique or something like that. I can't remember the exact name or spelling. I just heard that the Norwegian ship that is to be home based in Honolulu is getting around the Jones Act by going to a small French island every week.

Dambrosi - my friend said she would try and get a postcard for you. If she does and
sends it to me I will send it to Joe to forward on to you. This same friend was on the Nieuw Amsteram last week when they stopped in Honolulu on their way back from Sydney, She said it was weird being on the ship with no passengers, no artwork or antiques and nothing in the shops. Almost like a ghost ship.

The Constitution sank under tow in the North Pacific on her way to the scrapyard.

There was a Special Act of Congress to allow Nieuw Amsterdam to be reflagged. Part of the deal was that all modifications be done in American yards and that the company build two brand new ships in the United States. When the second of the new builds is finished, Patriot will lose its special status and either have to be reflagged outside the U.S, or taken out of service.

I guess they are only friendly when you spend money with them as I did Seriously, I have several picutres taken on our cruises. My wife and I honeymooned on the Constitution 15 years ago and took our kids back last year. Alas, the Constitution was no longer available, as mentioned above, but we felt right at home on the essentially identical Independence. The picture of the Constitution was taken in 1985 and the Independence picutres were taken
July 3, 1999 prior to sailing and July 9 off Kona.
Hope this helps, you can make your own postcards.

John - great pictures, especially the one taken at night with the fireworks - you are a very good photographer.
The first time we were in Hawaii in '93 we saw either the Constitution or the Independence - don't remember which. The ship was very impressive but not as impressive as the ship we were on -
Rotterdam V.

Thanks Joe, It does look a lot better. Couldn't log on from home, I had the wrong password written down and for some reason I couldn't get the 'forgot your password' email to work! I guess that will delay my first class status by one post. Dambrosi, if you collect postcards, have you seen this site http://www.cabinclass.com/pages/postc1.htm

Sympatico, I can't take credit for that photo, if you look closely, you'll see me sipping a drink on the aft deck watching the fireworks

The Patriot will sail for the United States Lines, not American Hawaii Cruise Line. I think they are owned by the same company and info on them can be found on the American Hawaii web site. United States Lines also has a separate web site. I think this just adds confusion, looking like there is competition in that market when there is none. However, NCL is putting a new ship there permanently that was transferred from Star. Maybe that will help reduce the cost of Hawaii crusies. I believe the new ship will begin sailing in December 2001. The new ship, when owned by Star was Superstar Leo.

I could be mistaken, but I believe United States Line is merely a name change so they could incorporate the new coastal cruisers in the Southeast U.S. without confusing people. The parent company is Delta Queen Steramships.

10X, How are things back home in Michigan. I'm a Michigan State graduate and my sister lives in Mason.
Yes, I am also confused about the new United States Lines. I think American Hawaii will be phased out, as the captian told us that the Independence will be retired in a few years. I think they will use the Independence as a resource to draw on for training and staffing their new ships and then quietly close up shop. Either that or they will position themselves into some niche market, maybe smaller vessels, more intimate cruises, like their Delta Queen Coastal Cruises. I would prefer this type of cruise myself.

Hi John,
It's cool, foggy and rainy today, about what you'd expect for our fall weather. It's been cooling off earlier than normal so a long winter is possible. The Upper Peninsula has already received 20" of snow in Marquette.

I've been watching this Hawaii thing since I have a group going in February 2002. Right now we are able to do 11 days on Vision of the Seas for less money than a 7 day from American Hawaii, United States Lines, or NCL. Go figure.
