Has anyone gone on the Norwegian Costal Voyage? Just received a brochure on this line and it looks very interesting. The prices seem very reasonable, but since I have never heard of the line, I would be leery of trying it.

All I know is that these 'Cruises' are based on Norway's network of Cruise/Ferries.

I seem to recall that someone here has tried them?

If you are referring to the Hurtigruten cruises, check our reviews of the Bergen Line
ships/ferries at... http://www.cruiseserver.net/travelpage/cruiselines/bergen.asp .

There's a fair bit of history in the reviews as well.

You should absolutely try Hurtigruten. Very special, very interesting but quite expensive.

Norwegian Coastal Voyages is what used to be known as Bergen Line. As a child I sailed from Stavangar, Norway to Newcastle, England on the Meoter (I believe). This was back in the sixties but the service was good, the food was great. The line has always had a good reputation.

I am a new member on this site and thoght I would jump in as I have been on the Hurtigruten, albeit 5 years ago. It was a special trip for my 60th birthday. First of all the Norwegian Coastal Voyage is not a cruise in that the cabins could not be describes as luxurious or large. They are adequate and because the scenery is so magical you spend a lot of time in the observation lounge or visiting the ports that the ship calls into every day. The company stresses that the ship is a working vessel which calls at ports all the way up the coast until it reaches the Russian border. It is a cargo ship and also picks up passengers at each port and drops off people travelling between places. Th food was strong on fish dishes and the meals were buffet style. Prices for drinks are astronomical as are most prices in Norway. we went in June and so it was daylight nearly 24 hours a day. Excursions were well arranged and the places visiting were most interesting. It was an unforgettable experience. Some people travel North for 6-7 days and then fly or take the train back down to the South. We stayed for the whole trip from Bergen and back to Bergen. If you would like to know may more about the experience please ask. The newest ships look rather like cruise liners and are big; there are other smaller and more traditional ships. Some people prefer the smaller ships and say they are more intimate and you get to know people better. we went for the large ship as I was fearful that I would be travel sick and I thought they would be better stabilised.
greetings from London
Anniel

It is a marvelous trip!!!! We were on one of the older ships about 8 years ago, but saw some of the new ones. The shore excursions were very good. The meals were buffet style for breakfast and lunch but served fanily style for dinner. The older ships (just two remaining) are more fun and the seamanship in docking without thrusters is really great. The newer ones are like big ferryboats with cargo handled through a side door by a forkift. The Norwegian government subsidises the service to connect with communities that are isolated except by sea. If you have good "sea legs" take one of the older ships. Good reservations need to be made far in advance. The scenery is wonderful however you go.
