Now that Crown Cruise Line is out of business. What will happen to the sixth permit for Bermuda? What will happen to the Phila./Balt. market to Bermuda? Does Apple Vacations try to get back into the market for 2002?

Interesting question. Apple Vacations was used by Crown Cruise line merely as a marketing tool. The had no direct "contract" so to speak with the Bermuda government. As Cronw Cruise Line found out - albeit too late - using Apple Vacations had not really been in their best interest. Many agents outside of the east coast... shoot even up here in New England... were not familiar with Apple Vacations. They had a little knowledge of another ship going to Bermuda... but that was the extent of it. In using Apple - Crown shot themselves in the proverbial foot.
As I watched last season unfold, Crown was getting the word out to more cruse agencies about the ship..... although too late as it turns out.

2002.. guaranteed... we will see alot of changes in the Bermuda market. Not only is Crown gone, Celebrity will only being running "Zenith" (I have a sneaky suspicion it won't be Zenith by the way).......and I see prices escalating on the run.

I have a hunch we will see a new player on the NY-Bermuda run in 2002.........which should make for some interesting comments!!

Sure hope SOMEONE operates out of Baltimore this season. None are currently scheduled.
Crown was the ideal ship of ideal size for Bal/Phil markets, using the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal.

I am NOT going to get on the Wright Brother's Folly to cruise!!

Even if they went back to Bermuda, doubt that they would be allowed to dock on Front Street. Don't you remember that they wouldn't let us dock there when we went in '90 after the Westerdam was stretched? CE was furious as he said he could have gotten ship in there with no trouble but the authorities said the ship was too big!!

My wife and I went from Charleston, S.C. on the Horizon a couple of years ago. Was a great cruise. I would be sorry if the Horizon were no longer to been seen alongside the quay at the Royal Naval Dockyard. Again I would put in another word for more cruises from Charleston.

Yes, Celebrity announced that they would not be returning Horizon to Bermuda in 2002. This announcement was made inconjunction with
her new deployment out of Miami.

Remember it well - another reason to keep some of the smaller ships - Guess I'm the 'eternal optimist'!

Took the QE2 out of Baltimore back in November 1991 (i believe) in a transatlantic crossing to Southampton. Went first to New York, then on to Southampton. Rough seas made for an exciting and memorable crossing.

Also, have taken QE2 twice from New York to Bermuda. One Labor Day weekend, we hit the stern of a hurricane, and wasn't sure we were going to make it. Our old faithful, QE2, held up well and arrived on time; unlike two other ships--one had to turn back to New York, and the other had to remain in Bermuda for repairs before returning to mainland. Oh, the horrors of being stuck in Bermuda

I would have LOVED to see Carnival run to Bermuda with the Tropicale. It would have been the perfect ship for this! But alas it's not to be. Maybe Carnival would do this with the Jubilee or another Holiday class ship. Another question is... Do you think lines like Carnival do not like to go to Bermuda because the Casino is closed too many days while the ship is in port and they do not make enough money with the casino closed so much?

When I was on the ROTTERDAM's TransAtlantic cruise to Lisbon, back in 1999,we called at Bermuda.I was so looking forward to docking at Front Street and was very disappointed when we docked at the Royal Naval Dockyard.I was even more disgruntled when I had to pay $40 US for a taxi into Hamilton! Thank goodness I found out about the ferry back across to the Dockyard for just a couple of dollars. Then on top of everything else,it was pouring with rain and even the horses & buggies were not available in town!

But I still love Bermuda having spent an idyllic honeymoon there many years previously. And I can still remember my husband and I watching the ships alongside Front Street as well as the ships sailing off to parts unknown. As the island song goes:
"Bermuda Is Another World!"

BTW if my memory serves me corrrectly, weren't you on that particular cruise in '99,Green?

Terri

That I was Terri - we sat cooling our heels in Lisbon - for ever it seemed. Remember that crazy guy who tried so hard to latch on to us? If I remember rightly we talk endlessly about William Holden.

It was a fabulous trip despite the pouring rain in Beautiful Bermuda. I really felt badly for the passengers on their first visit.

Happy Cruisin'
