OCEANIC "Pulled" Back Into Service

March 20, 2001: Premier Cruise Line's 1965-built OCEANIC, (also known as THE BIG RED BOAT 1), one of the most influential and beloved ships of her generation, will reportedly begin sailing for Spanish-based Pullmantur in Mediterranean cruise service beginning with a sailing from Barcelona in 21/4/2001. Since the collapse of Premier in late 2000, the ship has languished at Freeport, Bahamas awaiting sale.

The Berlitz cruise guide has not rated the "Oceanic" very highly in the past, this included: the ship, food, service, accommodation and the overall cruise experience.

Is the guide book wrong in the CruiseTalkers opinions?

i used to work on cruise ships and i have been on board during quite few visits of the gentleman from Berlitz ( he used to be an musican on QE2 anyway - drummer i think but cant remember exactly)
the inspections of this kind are pretty strange since everyone on board knows that douglas ward (thats his name) is comming on board - and i dont believe that u can really rate a ship on a 1 or 2 days visit a year.
oceanic used to be a great ship for familys and kids and food and service was adjusted to this clientel- can not compare this with the classic service u have to expect on cruise ship with more mature clientel.
i could never understand what qualifies an former musican to be the great "god of the cruise industries"

Premier essentially turned a "silk purse into a sow's ear"

There was a huge outcry when Premier talked of desecrating the Rotterdam V and they didn't.

The original Oceanic was magnificent, although I never sailed her. Hopefully Pullmantours can refurbish her to the previous glory.

Unlike the Norway, Costa Riviera, and Topaz, her exterior has not been disfigured with extra decks and balconies.

I have had differing opinions with many travel writers, this is why I like the reader reviews, and put them all together and see their perspective.

Cuisine and service is strictly the people running the show, whether it is the Seaborne Sun or the Regal Empress.
