Sorry topgun - you're wrong. This isn't a joke. If it had been, I'd have attached a smiley or at least a LOL. Cruisers are being notified of changes to their December cruises as we speak.

I've no idea if this is really going to happen.

But not having smokers and families aboard excludes a large part of the potential market.

However, some cruise lines only target a particular 'niche' by design!

Yup......kids.and smoking. Although the article I read said you could not smoke in your cabin.. nor could you smoke on your verandah. So...I guess you get to smoke around the non-smokers!!!

Well....there goes the Tahiti idea :-(

I know that a LOT of you will disagree with me and not like what Im about to say, but being only 15 years of age, I think that I speak for all of the 'minors' who contribute to this message board, that it is discrimination from the cruise lines not to let minors onto their ships.
I understand that a lot of the times children can misbehave, but not all children are like that. When given the appropriate situation, kids can and sometimes exceed the behavoral levels of some adults.
I also understand that there a quite a lot of family-orientated cruise lines, e.g Carnival, Disney, where children and teens are greatly cared for, but I think that you can understand how I feel when we are 'snobbed' by other lines.
That would be like us under 18's building a shopping center (mall) for us and ONLY us. (I know that is next to impossible).

What I would like to know is, What is so bad about having children (i.e people under 18) on a cruise with you? We do not smell, we do not have unwanted diseases, we do not eat off the floor!
You might agree, or you might disagree with me, but remember:
YOU WERE UNDER 18 ONCE TOO!!!!

A very good point, andizz!

I think that some CruiseTalkers feel that with so many cruise lines and ships there is room for choice: i.e Non-smoking ships, smoking ships, family ships, Adults only ships etc.

Some people are very tolerant of smokers and kids etc., others are not!

This Just came through on Travel Managment Daily:

RENAISSANCE CRUISES is ending its adults-only policy and easing--
slightly--its long-standing no-smoking edict aboard all its ships.
Renaissance said it now will allow children age 2 and up to sail with
parents or guardians. Under the new smoking policy, company officials
said, the line will offer "limited, designated areas" for cigarette smoking
fleet wide, although "98% of the ships' passenger areas will remain
smoke free." The policies apply to bookings made after April 2 and to
sailings departing Dec. 1 and beyond. Renaissance said it was responding
to "feedback and frequent requests" from travel agents and passengers.

Might it not be a better idea only to have kids places on selected sailings, or just on selected cruises, same for smoking, and that way they can please all parts of the market???

Paddy.

Here is an offical release:

Renaissance has just announced it is abolishing its no-kids and no-smoking
policies. The reason? “These were two of the last holdovers of the old Renaissance, a company that was restrictive, not in tune with customers’ desires and travel agent wishes,” says company CEO Frank Del Rio. “We have changed so much (but) these two policies were sticking out there like a sore thumb.”

The cruise line, which operates eight identical nearly-700 passenger vessels
(plus two small boutique vessels), has begun accepting reservations from smokers and family travelers but the old policies will remain in effect until December.

Renaissance has tinkered with a number of other options as well. In particular,
the company is altering itineraries, transferring money-losing wintertime
Mediterranean cruises to a new focus on warm-weather destinations. Besides
its established Tahiti/Polynesia and Far East itineraries, next winter will see ships in South America and the Caribbean, among other places. Still no definite plans to cruise Alaska though the possibility, according to Del Rio, exists for summer 2003.

Well we've been here before but I guess we never tire of this topic. So here goes.

Of all the cruises I've been on 2 of which have been Premier and 1 on Carnival. We choose those lines because of the children's programs they had. Which means, there were a lot of kids aboard each of the ships. You know what, I don't remember one child that was loud, running around out of control, rude, pushy or just plain obnoxious. I do remember though loud, pushy, rude and obnoxious adults, on other ships..... and I'm not talking about Carnival or Premier. So how do we regulate loud, rude, pushy and obnoxious adults off the ships?

We're leaving fo our next cruise on Monday. This time we will be sailing on Princess. We choose this particular week because our daughter is off of school for spring break. Which means there is a good chance that the ship will have many other children. I certainly hope so because it will make her trip more enjoyable. I'll have to let you know how everyone's behavior was.

Joan
