I read recently that Southwest Airlines wants to get into the cruise business. Their staterooms will be on a first come basis. The first 30 passengers will get the first pick of rooms. There will be food available from fast food companies (pizza hut, Burger King) for additional cost. Drink prices though will be somewhat cheap. And free peanuts will be available at all bars. I wish this was an April fools joke. What do you think? Heck, I won't even fly on their airline.

the basic idea of only booking a cabin without food or with only breakfast included sounds not so bad if there will be a choice of propper restaurants on board and not fast foodchains only - this might be a future idea for some company's targeting the lower tourissm market- but i dont think that a company like Southwest can get a concept like this to work and i guess the idea to sell the cabins on a "walk in" base like in a motel is not gona work out

I also read this but the article was dated 4/1, so I assumed this was an April Fool's joke. If this is true, I think the joke's on Southwest if they think this is where budget cruising is headed.

From what I understand Sowthwest is a first rate(as far as management goes) and well run airline. This might work if the basic cruise rate was cheap and you could pick and choose your resturants and ammenities ahead of time so you don't get nickel and dimed to death once onboard.

I think it would be really sad if they only sold /served fast food. I am sure the dinning aspect is one of the main reasons why we are all drawn to cruising. Would my husband have to wear his tux with his cheedeburger!!!

If this is true it's scary. The airlines have already been ruined why do they have set their sights on running cruising.

If this is a true newstory, it does not suprise me. Southwest is successful as an airline becuase it realized that there was a substantial number of people who want to get from point A to B and are not looking for the travel experience to be that special.
There are people who cruise on merchant vessals because they are more interested in a cheap means of seeing the world, and are more interested in the destination than the ship.

I sailed through the entire inside passage on the Alaska Marine Ferry and paid about $230 US. I did not get a cabin but slept on one of the sofas. Many other people brought their own sleeping bags. I wish the food in the ships cafeteria was fast food!!! But it was a great experience because I met many wonderful Alaskans and the ships are smaller than cruise ships, so we could go into passages that the big ships couldn't. We saw tons of wild life - humpbacks, killer whales, etc. It was not luxury, but it was fun!
