I would love info on booking a week on the ship and a week on an island ( back to back) Has anyone been on a vacation like this, what is the best ship to go on and what island would you recommend? I have already received some info from Sympatico which I have saved but would love a few other ideas. We throughly enjoy our cruising experience but find that we come home completely shattered and in desperate need of another holiday. We feel that the above holiday would fit the bill, allowing us to enjoy all that the cruise ship as to offer and then we could relax on an all inclusive island for a week. Oh hurry, I'm getting excited just thinking about it. Were we just on holiday three weeks ago, Geez it seems like a lifetime away.

This kind of holidays are very common in Europe where many cruise lines offer this combination.I suggest you to check the Costa's itineraries. The Costa Victoria offers a 7 days long itinerary with calls at Genoa,Naples,Palermo,Tunis,Palma of Majorca,Barcelona,Marseille and back to Genoa. You can combine the cruise with 7 days at Palma:you can choose between 4 hotels rated 4 and 5 stars.Majorca is a fascinating island with a wonderful blue sea and many interesting places to visit.Palma is a nice medieval town with an imposing gothic cathedral. The most interesting tour goes to the "Cuevas du drach" a fascinating cave under the sea level. If you prefer to explore the greek island try the recently refurbished Costa Classica. The ship performs 7 days long cruises from Venice with stops at Bari,Katakolon,Santorini,Myconos,Rhodos and Dubrovnik. You can stay for a week at Rhodos,a nice peacefull island with many interesting antique, medieval and even islamic monuments.Don't miss the excursion to the Typical village of Lindos where you can also swimn in the St.Paul's bay.MSC offers similar cruisetours with the Melody and the Rhapsody at lower prices.I don't suggest you to try Festival because this company is suffering many problems.

I'd ask my TA to check out local (Canadian) Tour companies - I believe several of them do this type of vacation.
It's much more common in Europe and the UK.

You realise that you would be paying one way air fares - one to join the ship and one to return from your chosen 'relaxing week' destination - could be expensive!

Will be interesting to hear what you come up with.

To Green:sorry to disagree with you but the things are a bit different:when the ship will arrive to the island that you have choosen for your beach vacation you'll desembark to reach your hotel. After 7 days you'll join back the ship to end your cruise at the same port of embark. An example:if you choose a cruise departing from Venice you'll return after 14 days back to Venice to take your flight to home. The combination isn't very expansive because in Italy the additional vacation at sea has a cost of about $ 500 to add to the price of the cruise.

Hooked,
I saw the post last night, but didn't realise it was you. Why don't you come back to Belfast/Carrick for a while in the summer and then go on a fly-cruise woth Airtours or Thomson direct from Belfast. Two birds with one stone and all that. There are plenty of charter flights from Canada to Belfast, From Toronto anyway, with Canada 3000 and Air Transat, maybe Royal too, I think anyway. The Summer 2002 cruise brochures will be out in a few months and if you want I can forward some on to you. Most summer cruises are from Majorca, and you can get a nice week in one of the varied resorts there. Personally I would do the island stay first.
Just an idea...

Paddy.

One possibility is Puerto Rico. A number of cruise lines run ships that do 7 day cruises from Puerto Rico, including both Princess and
RCL.

There are lots of hotels, beautiful beaches, casinos etc. Also it is a large island with lots of touring opportunities including Old San Juan - which feels very Spanish (which it was until 1898), old forts, a rain forest, lots of golf courses etc.

My wife and I spent a 4 day weekend in San Juan in November and had a great time.

Another possiblity you might consider would be Miami or Ft. Lauderdale.

Thanks everyone for your info. Paddy I would love to see what is offered in your end of the world. I never considered doing it this way. My family would kill me though if i said I was coming home only to board a cruise ship. Are you trying to get me into trouble with my crazy relatives

Yes, yes I am.
But seriously, as soon as the brochure is out I can send one to you if you like.
And I checked it out, this summer at least, Royal Airlines are operating flights to BFS from Toronto.
Good luck!
Paddy.
