I understand from reading the new Hawaii Brochure from HAL Oct. 2001-2002 that HAL is now imposing a new NON-SMOKING policy on their ships in all DINING AREAS. I believe that this new policy will go into effect on ALL ships beginning in October 2001 after speaking with several departments at HAL.
I, personally, do not believe that this was necessary as the ventilation was very good in all areas, however, we always get people who think the extreme!!
Also, after the 2001 World Cruise I understand prices on drinks went up 25%. I think they are killing themselves with all these changes!

Hi LizB -

I can live with HAL's no smoking in the dining room policy - it's getting to be the rule here in Toronto - even in private Clubs

BUT a 25% increase in the cost of drinks is something else again - Canadians will be particularly hard hit with the exchange rate - maybe Canadian Alumni will have something to say - I'll be one of the first in line with a letter of protest and you and I know who will be ahead of or right behind me.

Cheers.

I.

Great, now everybody can walk through a haze of smoke entering and leaving the dining room.

I for one am very happy with the no-smoking policy on HAL. Particularily because of the new data on second-hand smoke that has come out recently. Do you realize that if you are a parent who smokes .....by the time they are five years old through second-hand smoke, it is as if they have smoked 110 packs of cigarettes throughout their life. Second-hand smoke is proving more and more to be more deadly that previously known. I guess I have never understood the "joy?" of smoking, rather I understand it as a terrible addiction, it's a powerful drug, and it's sad how many millions of good people are in such bondage over this addiction.

I agree 100%

Of less importance: Tobacco smoke more quickly wears out ship A/C, interiors, and fittings. Nothing more ugly than a cigarette burn on a seat, or someone clutzily burning you with their cigarette tip.

When the airlines banned all smoking the life of the aircraft interiors went from 2 years to 5 years.

To me a cigarette is as digusting as one picking their nose in public.

I don't know why such good and intelligent people continue to fool themselves about the clear dangers of tobacco smoke?

I like sailing on HAL but there is always one negative. Tabacco smoke. When we boarded the Veendam on embarkation and started down the hallway to find our cabin, it stunk of cigarette smoke. Yet, the line tries to convince people that they clean the ship thoroughly. On another sailing, I was in a ping pong tournament, and guess what, my opponent was smoking a cigar. The only thing that could smell worse that would be raw sewage.

Even though I prefer HAL and Princess, the most beautiful experience at sea was the overall environment of the Carnival Paradise. I felt like a kid in a candy store because I was able to visit every lounge and roam the open decks without fear of having to avoid the stench of tabacco smoke.

Gohaze, Hey I have a few vices, but they don't affect other people, just me. I drink too much diet Mountain Dew, and I have this passion for chocolate. Think about it....second-hand smoke is deadly to non-smokers...just as deadly to breath in second-hand smoke as it is to actually smoke. (choke, choke, choke, cough, cough, cough, stink, stink, stink)

Clean, pure air.....ahhhh there's nothing better.... no choking, coughing, stinkin, raunchy smoke breath, or that deep rustic smoker's voice.

Don't get me started

Peter;

Hmmmmm, lets see, vices:
I only cruise on what you call 'floating hazard' classic liners that you think should all be scrapped; further polluting the Indian Ocean, and killing a few workers.

Never pretended to be perfect. I am not.

I look at addictions whether drugs, sex, cruising as a public health problem instead of moral collapse.

To non-smokers tobacco stench is really disgusting.

Like Barryboat said, if a vice is not hurting anyone, big deal, if so it is a bigger deal.

On topic: NCL has smoking allowed on the starboard side of the ship, and non-smoking on the port side. Dining rooms are non-smoking.

Of course you realise that a lot of the older ships you are touting are loaded with asbestos.
BTW...I don't smoke and the second hand stuff doesn't bother me a bit.

I think that some studies show second hand smoke to be more harmful than first hand? (might as just light up).

Barrybaot, is there new studies or are you just become more aware as you become more of a worring perent. How is the little one???

K&K, yes there are new reports out there. I live in Minnesota and there is a HUGE media push to expose the dangers of second-hand smoke, which new studies have shown to indeed be more harmful that actually smoking a cigarette. What comes out of a smoker, when they exhail, has very toxic chemicals that are worse than what the smoker brings into their own lungs. I think it has something to do the mixture of the tobacco with the oxygen in the lungs. I've always known this, but I'm happy about this new media campaign which exposes to the smoking public how toxic and harmful second-hand smoke is to everyone, especially infants.

Thanks for asking! Yes our baby is doing just fine, he is 3 months old today! He's cooing and smiling, and he's now starting to sleep better at night. I must say that I truly enjoy being a parent.

So does HAL - most Lounges are also so designated. There are smoking and non-smoking tables in the dining room - in my smoking days we never sat at a smoking table for dinner - failed to understand how anyone could not get through a meal without lighting at least one cigarette and allowing it to smolder in an ashtray.

I welcome a smoke free dining room

The reason I did this post was just to inform people of the new policy on HAL SHIPS. It was NOT meant to be a sounding board about the virtues of non-smoking vs. smoking as Barryboat has made it seem. Everyone knows what has been in print and in the media since C. Everett Koop was our Surgeon General, and we DON'T need someone here on TP to give his/her own radical views. There may be some folks who have booked a future cruise and do not like this new policy and would still have a chance to cancel if they so wished!
By the way, having just cruised 3-months on the World Cruise with HAL, I can tell Barryboat that not all air in this big wide world is clean and pure for all to breath either. Even here on Cape Cod we get pollution from industrial cities in the eastern part of our country on certain days in the summer...not always the nice ocean air we are supposed to have!!
Mountain Dew and Chocolates...sounds like a caffeine fix to me...what fun you must be!!!

I have an uncle who used to smoke, from age 16 to age 50. He quit cold turkey one day when he could not find a match or lighter. He now sucks on lollipops. His wife did not like him smoking in the house. But he was the boss. When she rode with me a few times, oh boy, her clothes stunk and she never smoked a cigarette in her life.

I was on a Carnival cruise once and this guy at our table of ten had to leave at least twice during dinner to smoke a cigarette. Each time he came back to the table his being permeated with the stench of smoke. Certainly subtracted from the dining experience.

With regards to the cost of drinks etc on HAL....

I was pleasantly surprised at the cost of soda pop and small bottles of water in the cabins,on the World Cruise last month. My list quoted: Water 75c,soda pop $1.50.
Considering I had been paying $1.70 for soda and $3.00 or $4.00 for water, depending on the size of bottle,on the MAASDAM at Christmas,I was more than happy.
Mind you,I didn't buy any extra water from any of the lounges for my shore trips so I cannot be sure that the price of water remained at 75 cents!

It will be interesting to see the price changes on the next World Cruise, what say,LizB???

Liz, I know you didn't want this to be a referendum on smoking on cruise ships, but I don't think HAL was being "extream". I am glad of the new policy. As a person with several allergies and a sensitivity to cigarette smoke, I appreciate this. Depending on what ship you sail, not all ships have good ventilation and not all ship crews enforce smoking regulations. I have been on ships where one side was for smokers and the smokers picked up the ashtrays and went to the other side of the ship. I am sure that HAL is creating this policy in response to consumer demand. Carnival's Paradise is one of their top selling ships.

hhornblower...I can only say that on this last World Cruise of three months we were on that the smell of perfume and after-shave was FAR worse than any cigarette smoke in the dining or lounge areas!! We had several people with us who had asthma problems and they were all complaining about the smell in the elevators and even in the lounges. They had to move from people who smelled very strongly of perfume...not from smoking.
I do agree with the non-smoking policy in the Dining Room but I am not too sure about the Lido by the Pool!?
Perhaps every cruise line should have one NON-SMOKING ship for those who can't stand any smoke at all, I don't know.

Puhleeze - "I don't like second hand smoke" "I don't like perfume" "I don't like children" "I don't like this or that"
Well, I don't like chronic complainers!
Please stay in your sterile little homes and leave us out of your suffering. One can easily say that people who overeat are costing us taxpayers billions in heart care, so people should be limited in the amount they're allowed to eat -
People who drink alcohol cause most traffic highway deaths so all alcohol should be forbidden -
LIFE CAUSES DEATH - DUH! Therefore all living things should be eliminated - stupid logic - learn to cope with life and kwitcherbitchin!

I assume that HAL have responded to customer feedback when introducing the 'No Smoking/Dining Room' rule? Most other cruise lines do not permit smoking in the dining rooms either. Smoking while eating has become socially un-acceptable, and HAL are simply reflecting this.

If HAL fail to respond to customer opinion their potential passengers will simply stay in their "sterile little Homes" or choose another cruise line!

Imagine that policy on a cruise ship, it would sail empty!

People who drink alcohol cause most traffic highway deaths so all alcohol should be forbidden

Drink-drvining is illegal, had you not heard? Anyway, most road accidents are in fact caused by sober drivers! However, I see you point.

(Does that mean is all drivers were drunk there would be less accidents...duh!)

Malcolm...drink/driving, except in a very few countries, is NOT illegal. It is against the law to operate a vehicle if you are over a certain limit for that country - which varies.

thulewx, Your comments are a little uncalled for and immature so I won't even respond.

Most cruise ships are now moving towards the (no-smoking in the dining room) policy, because of the passenger's comments. The majority has finally caused the cruise lines to comply with an increasingly important issue, allowing for a more comfortable atmosphere for everyone in the dining room.
