Injured Cruise Passengers Return

SEATTLE (AP) - A cruise ship returned to Seattle on Sunday after a voyage that included a sudden movement near the mouth of the Strait of Juan de Fuca that injured a few passengers and shattered glassware.

``It was like the Titanic. People were flying around in chairs, The gift shop was destroyed,'' said Sharon Suttle, a travel-consultant manager from Greensboro, N.C., said at dockside . ``I was afraid for my life. It was scary.''

Following Saturday's accident, 16 passengers were treated - some for broken bones - when the Norwegian Sky made a scheduled stop at Victoria, British Columbia, Richard Reeve, maritime coordinator for the Canadian Coast Guard in Victoria, said Sunday.

The U.S. Coast Guard (news - web sites) was investigating the incident, said Petty Officer Glenn Sonntag.

Darren Morley, a Canadian Coast Guard search and rescue coordinator, said the ship's officers told him they had ``experienced a large roll.''

Reeve said he was told by the ship's captain that the vessel had made ``a quick course alteration'' at the mouth of the strait, but he said he didn't know the reason for the maneuver.

``We were up on the 11th floor, in the cafeteria,'' passenger Jean O'Neal told KIRO-TV. ``All of a sudden, the dishes and trays came forward, and we tried to hold them back. They just kept coming forward. They hit me and pushed me clear across the room.''

The 76,000-ton ship, operated by Seattle-based Norwegian Cruise Lines, was carrying 2,000 passengers. It left for Alaska on May 13.

No one answered telephones Sunday at the line's Miami headquarters.

The Strait of Juan de Fuca runs between Washington's Olympic Peninsula and Canada's Vancouver Island.

Just saw the news report of this "incident"!! It was on our very conservative CBC network. (in other words no sensationalism) There were approximately 70 passengers injured with probably the 16 mentioned previously, admitted to hospital. The public areas of the ship shown in the video were a disaster. Pretty scary!

The cruise line claimed that it was due to a faulty automatic pilot and that the ship was staying in service, without any interruption and that they would just not use the automatic pilot.

To all you well seasoned sailors what are your thoughts on this?

My wife said she saw on the news a story about this incident, but the facts were different. The ship apparently made an abrupt turn to avoid a collision with a fishing trawler. Anyone else heard this?

Barryboat - I heard the same story as your wife, they swerved to avoid a fishing boat and 16 people were injured.

I have heard both versions. First the fishing boat and the latest was that the auto pilot malfunctioned. Wish they would get the story's straight. Makes one wonder.

Today's updated on-line edition of the Globe and Mail (Canada's national newspaper) gives the autopilot version of the story. The fishing boat isn't mentioned.

I've crossed from Seattle to Victoria and the waters, while usually placid, can get rough. There were times when the ship (if one of the smaller vessels) had to turn back. Even the larger ferries will do a good roll and pitch when mother nature decides to show her force.

Operating on autopilot in restricted waterways?

This seems like a boneheaded m/o to me. If there was either an intruding vessel, or a requirement for a change in course, these would not be appropriate times for autopilot use.

What next? Autopilot approach to Hong Kong harbor?

And I do not drive on cruise control in Washingto Beltway traffic either.

I heard both stories, too. That makes 2 strikes against NCL. Isn't the Sky the same one that was caught dumping raw sewage? Not good NCL!

We have had a lot of news coverage here in Washington State, because the Sky's home port is Seattle. They interviewed a lot of the passengers and Coast Guard. The passengers said the Captain announced that they were having a problem with the rudder. I don't know where the fishing boat story came from. They reported the fishing boat thing on the news first? I have heard stories from passengers about the kids in the pool being thrown out and one mother trying to help her son and getting broken bones. A woman in the gift shop getting showered with broken glass. It would be like being in a tall building and suddenly the building tips part way over and back! The Coast Guard didn't say they should not have been in auto pilot in that area.
