We are heading out for our honeymoon on Costa Cruises to Italy, Greece, Turkey and Croatia. We are in angst as to whether we should reschedule, cancel or just go. Please give me a heads up what it has been like on the cruises past few weeks since the WTC disaster . Have you heard of Costa cancelling any ports? Any feedback would be appreciated

I see that you are from New York.

There are no problems in Europe, as such. I'm not aware any ports are shut? Security will just be a little tighter.

I'd personally feel a little safer in The Med than in New York at present! Go for it...escape from all this sadness for a little while!

As you know just off Aurora yesterday am(Monday) and by tea time she was off again to Greece, no worries, everything clockwork as usual. There has always been more security checks for European travellers than those in the US and although people moan that for an extreme example El Al interrogations can be lengthy and intrusive generally most people accept the need for them. You will probably feel safer in Europe at the moment.

This is my opinion. You are planning to head to part of the Middle East. There are now daily threats against Americans and Jews.

In 2002, RCI is already pulling some of its Eastern Med cruises.

I disagree with the NYC comment. Crime has dropped dramatically. NYC is probably the safest place to be.

If you are not in the penalty phase before the cruise, I would think hard.

I am keeping my own cruise in November, but if we had a cruise to the eastern Med, we would have cancelled even if it were fully paid.

I don't see any problem going to those ports. If there was any concern whatsoever by the cruiselines they wouldn't be going.

Fondaenergy, this is Europe not the Middle East. Europe has always had more stringent security checks than those in the US too. You are no more likely to come to any harm than cruising the Carribbean, and the Med is far more enjoyable IMHO.

Go TeeGee, and have a great Honeymoon, then come back and tell us all about it

Pam

I did not mean 'general' crime, I was talking about Terrorism! It is clear from the NY tragedy that in the modern world no one is 100% safe, anywhere!

You could be victim of a terrorist attack in any part of the world - on the street, in your car, on a train or on a ship. However, it is still very unlikely.

The Medditeraian is NOT the Middle East!

Don't let the terrorists win by spreading fear. Carry on life as normal! Why cancel a cruise to a 'stable' and very attractive part of the world through unfounded fear? That would be a great shame.

In my book, Turkey is next to the Middle East

The ports mentioned are not without risk.

personally....if the cruise line is going wherever, I have no problem going on the ship. I'd suggest you are more likely to get run over outside your house than be attacked by a terrorist, even the IRA in the UK.
To panic and not go, or cancel, is to give them the victory.
In fact now is a great time to go as the fares should be coming down and most places won't be crowded as usual.

We should note that TeeGee is from New York.

The American perspective on its attacks is different from Europeans. We are being instructed every day to avoid some foreign place because Americans are likely targets. If you look at the Internet, it would appear that even stringent searchs do not catch all the bad guys.

We are having nightly alerts about people running around here and evidence of other terrorist plots. Our attorney general is telling us that we should be on high alert.

Americans are understandably edgy.

Any cruiser needs to consider the current situation as well as possible military action.

If people think these things through and still want to go, more power to them.

There are Americans who are canceling their Med. cruises, regardless of how you categorize the Med.

We just cannot presume things are safe.

Thanks all for you input. As fondaenergy has indicated we Americans are very edgy. I work in NYC and am a few miles north of the WTC. That day and every day there after we walk on eggshells. My fiance and I have several concerns: 1-being American will we be targeted in other countries by the locals (who is friend/who is foe) We have so many rumors (eg. the French people are happy over this tragedy because Americans are not there favorite people)
2-Will terrorists now target Americans in other countries? 3-foremost, our main concern is the ability to get back to the U.S . if a war breaks out while we are overseas.

No one knows any of the answers for sure. I was hoping on getting feedback from people have travelled this route from 9/13 to present to get a feel for the emotional climate amongst passengers and locals in each port. Still

I once read that American's were very "nervous" travellers. A few months ago American tourists visiting the UK and Europe all thought that they would all get 'Hoof and Mouth', even though people can't catch it! This has now been superseded by a new 'Terror, because that's exactly how 'Terrorism' works.

Fact: The SS Norway arrived in Le havre (France) 7 days after the tragedy. The ship's passengers were mainly American (except me). The local French people were full of sympathy and kindness for the American people. We saw lots of floral tributes to the people of NY.

Much of Europe likes American's, and the cities and ports rely on them for tourism. Culturally much of Europe has more in common with the USA, that they do with the 'Middle East', and have in fact embraced American culture: McDonalds, Hollywood Movies, American Clothing and sport etc.

Few people of any race, could fail to be moved and feel sympathy, by the recent tragedy - apart from some non-European fanatics!

The recent tragedy proved that no one is safe anywhere, even in the financial capital of the worlds foremost superpower! Nowhere is immune to modern terrorism or modern warfare, for that matter. To think that you are somehow safer in America, but not in Europe, is a mistake in my opinion.

It would really be a tragedy to miss your cruise, but my opinion holds no more weight that anyone else.

The US has issued warnings to all Americans traveling to Italy. We're booked on a cruise in the Mediterranean, and ABSOLUTELY WON'T GO now!

In the papers this a.m. (don't mean to be an alarmist):

"U.S. intelligence officials have told
members of Congress there is a
high probability that terrorists
associated with Osama bin Laden
will try to launch another major
attack on American targets here or
abroad in the near future.

Based on what officials described
as credible new information, the
FBI and the CIA have assessed the
chances of a second attempt to
attack the United States as very
high, sources said yesterday.

At a briefing Tuesday (October 2, 2001), in response to a senator's question about the
gravity of the threat, one intelligence
official said there is a "100 percent"
chance of an attack should the United States strike Afghanistan, according to sources familiar with the briefing."

In all due respect Colt, it is possible to read just about every Scenario in the papers at present, from biological warfare to nuclear attack!

In my experience terrorists tend to lay low when the 'heat is on'. They do not want their missions foiled by high security. They can lay dormant for years and just when we all get complacent again and no longer expect it...they strike.

KPS, it's a pity that you felt you had to cancel, but you must go with your instincts. I was not aware that there were any particular political problems in Italy for Americans? (Italy is a very long way indeed from Afghanistan!)

I think we should all take to the sea, it seems safer than being on dry land at present!

So...don't give in to them kps, go on your cruise and enjoy.

Gohaze, last week the government issued an additional and SEPARATE caution for American tourists in Italy. This is in addition to the "world wide" caution. It was in the NY Times last Tuesday.

Tourists of any nationality should exercise "caution" wherever they visit in the world! Muggers and fanatical groups have always preyed on tourists, to an extent. However, lets get this in perspective and remember that millions of tourists travel in safety, every year.

I do not personally believe that there is any additional risk to American's visiting Italy and the popular Mediterranean ports of call. However, it would be nice to hear it from someone who has just returned to confirm this?

Anyone?

I absolutely agree.

It's because such statements are appearing in the media on a daily basis, and the fact that our "intelligence" services seemed to have been caught napping on 911, that, i believe, Americans are very on edge, apprehensive and reactive to things that would have minimal impact on our personal radar screens prior to Sept 11.

Hi guys--I'm back! We left 10-4-01 and returned 10-13-01 After much anxiety we decided to go. Boy was it AWESOME! We flew to Milan then Venice and set sail (Costa Tropicale) to Bari, Katakolon Greece, Santorini, Mykonos (also Greece), Kusadasi Turkey and Dubrovnik Croatia.
As you all know the war broke out the 3rd day into our trip.
Our moms were quite concerned however things were incredibly calm on the ship. We called and assured our family we were fine. We were more concerned about their welfare in NY.
On the ship, no public announcements were made but we all had access to International/US news on TV in our rooms. Daily headline newspapers were delivered to our door, we had email access and best of all excellent phone service in our rooms. We were never out of touch.
Each step of the way we felt secure with ID checks on and off the ship as well as our baggage was xray'd etc.

The Turkish were outstandably humble and progressive and gave us the royal treatment. They invited us for tea and discussed the differences between Democratic Muslims and Muslim fundamentalist.
The only warnings we were given were not to bring undue attention to the fact we were travelling Americas (ie: I took off my memorial American pin)
The people on the ship (with the exception of the rude pushy Germans) were extremely warm and supportive. We all shared a feeling of sadness but determination to not allow the terrorists to errode democracy and our freedom.
The airports were very secure with plenty of surprise baggage checks, pat downs, hi sensitivity metal detectors.
All in all we did not feel that we were in harms way at anytime during the trip.
Good luck to all that plan to travel. It is completely a personal decision to travel. I can only share my personal experience and it was AWESOME!
Thanks for all your advice.
