Just this past Friday, the
State of Florida declared
Port Canaveral, "The safest and securist port",
in the state. Then the media blares it in the newspaper and on local t.v. stations. The media tells too much and people
are going to start relaxing. And something WILL happen and which port
do you think will get hit?
Why Port Canaveral, just watch and see who tries to
test the authorities over
this. Nothing like touting
something that should have
been kept under wraps.

And what about the maniac with his explosive packed shoes? Now we're told that such devices made of plastic cannot be detected by scanners - only, we're told, by sniffing dogs. Seems to me this too should have been kept under wraps.

I do have to wonder!!!

I certainly agree where the media is concerned. They think they should be told everything. Can you imagine what would have happened to the Invasion of Normandy in W.W. II if present day media were there. They would have gone in ahead of time and alerted Hitler and all his troops that this is the time and place. Give me a break. We do not need to know each and every detail. Free speech was never meant to that way. We have twisted everything our founding fathers tried to do.

I was at the Port Everglades and the Port of Miami in November. I was not really impressed with the increased security.

They have added an additional Customs check. However, certain people get targeted. We saw two groups of crew "rousted". They did not bother to check us at all -- either coming or going. Seems to me that anybody could be a terrorist and Customs was letting 99.9 percent of the people in.

Then the National Guard. They stood around outside. I was not comforted when I saw how the luggage was handled.

The Coast Guard had one cutter. The Port of Miami is pretty big. If the cutter were on the Miami end, its crew could not see what was happening at the far end of the dock.

I think that we're being lulled into a false sense of security.

My expierence with port security will not make anyone happy. Took two week cruise the end of October. Upon entering Port of Miami in a taxi I was asked to show cruise ticket and passport. Good. During first week I became friends with a Carnival employee who worked as a diver on board. His job along with another diver was to dive and check the haul of the ship while docked in Miami and other port stops for drugs and or explosives. On thursday of that week he received a fax from corporate office that there service was no longer needed, to help cut costs. I was shocked. I never realized this was done but to discontinue it at a time when our country felt a need for more security amazed me. Next security failure. On saturday I went into Miami with two fellow crew members, we took the crew suttle van and upon our return I was worried, I had no credentials. When we arrived at the Port of Miami the driver opened the window and said he had all crew members and he waved us in without checking. Hope things will improve.

Welcome Aboard Dawn!

To All: In Britain (and Europe for that matter) we have lived with Terrorism for decades. We have never experienced a single event as catastrophic as September the 11th, but never the less, probably as many innocent people have been shot and blow-up going about there daily business, over the years.

Of course we all demand high security in this day and age, but it can never be total! If you are not prepared to travel until it is, you will never leave your home again!

Security staff and baggage handlers etc. often work for very low wages and under very unpleasant working conditions. They are expendable and are hired and fired at will. Due to the poor conditions of service, the turn-over of such staff, is also very high. You can imagine how difficult it must be to verify the credentials of every member of staff thoroughly. Airports, for example, employ hundreds of thousands of staff.

Terrorists can infiltrate countries, cities and jobs, and lie low for years. They wait for a weakness to appear, then attempt to exploit it! Terrorist constantly think of new ways to perpetrate there terror. At the moment is bombs in shoes, but what next?

The above is not meant to be a series of excuses, just some home truths. Of course we should still strive to make our Airports and Ports as safe as possible. But remember travelling on planes and ships is still so much safer than driving our cars!

In Britain we started debating Terrorism and security issues, long before I was born. We still are! I'm sorry to say that America will just have to learn to live with terrorism - there is no solution.
