I was wandering did anyone know anything about the Luckenbach Line and what color funnel they had in the 1920's, I think they were a cargo line ?
Any info would be grate, thanks.

I had an Look at Arnold Kludas: "The German Passenger Liners since 1850".

There is no Luckenbach.

Either it is no German Name (but it sounds so) or it is something with Freight...

That was it, Freighter company sorry I forgot to put that down. It was also an American company. I guess they never went into the passenger trade ?

Couldn't find color photos of any Luckenbach ship online. But I did find one of their plates for sale on a collectibles site, and the plate has their flag on it. Site is:

Interestingly, one of their ships has been in the news recently in the San Francisco area. There had been some mysterious oil deposits found off the coast recently with no known recent spills. Turned out to be leakage from the "Jacob Luckenbach," which sank after a collision with another ship in 1953. Go to

My mental image, as a kid prior to WWII was that the name was painted, in very large letters, along the sides of the ship, along with a large American flag [this was before the USA joined the festivities].

I also recall that said name took up almost the entire side of the ship. But so did Isebrandsten Line!

It was a New York company with about 25 ships - all cargo - before WWII. All the ships were named after family members and their main trade was inter-coastal. After the war they branched out trading overseas but eventually like so many others they declined and disappeared.
