Hello,Flown to all but one cruise, including one after 9/11. I have no qualms with flying. We usually book transfers through the cruise line, and the airfare on our own. You tell the cruise line what flight you're on and they pick you up. This is cheaper and better than an air deviation. I've heard that at some ports transfers aren't available. Don't know what I'd do there. There aren't that many destinations accessible from New York. Bermuda and Canada/New England. If we just want to go someplace, and aren't really interested in destination, flying to FL and hopping on a ship there is far cheaper and not much more difficult. If we are cruising based on destination, chances are you can't get there from NY. Canada/New England would be nice but the prices are soooo high now on the nicer ships. So we just drive there instead. Happy Cruising, CruiseNY

Hello, quote: Originally posted by gohaze: In two weeks time. Sea Princess, Alaska 7 day return. Well, I hope you have a good time, and that all works well with your scooter and handicapped cabin. I didn't realize that you haven't been on a cruise as a physically-challenged person before. It must be quite something to adjust to. I guess for you, this is like a day-trip . Should be fun anyway. Hope all goes well so that you can resume your long expeditions! Happy Cruising, CruiseNY

Out of curiosity, why are you flying to Orlando? I would never myself reccommend that anyone fly into Miami, which is one of the worst airports I have ever had the displeasure of encountering, but Orlando is quite far from Miami. Personally, I like PBI (West Palm Beach) for South Florida myself. Guess no UK flights there, though... When on a cruise, I do sometimes use FLL (Ft. Lauderdale) or even, in a pinch, Miami. Already put aside are points for another 5 years of Florida trips, or perhaps a trip to somewhere exotic to join ship. Having points available sure make cruising more affordable.
You're probably a business traveller.......racking up points is easy. It's different for those of us who have to pay the fare to earn the points. Even when you have them, there's that little matter of 'point space' being available. I like them too and have saved money on several long hauls. Just hope your 'stash' is still valid for your Florida flights 5 years hence!!

Hello,I find FFPs confusing myself... Somehow there is always some loophole for the airline to deny rewards - bad date, not enough designated space, etc. Also, airfares here out of NY to Florida have gotten so cheap, that the car service fare from my house to the airport sometimes costs more than the flight! Delta is usually ridiculously cheap to Florida, even on peak dates. $200 round trip, maybe, in peak season. If you go any old time, you can get $125, roundtrip from NY to FLL (Ft. Lauderdale)! The only thing I would ever like for an FFP would be to upgrade, on a longhaul flight. But now, with the advent of "economy premium" cabins on those flights, it's all geting blurred. Who knows, I've been trying to figure out the airline industry for years, and haven't been very successful ... They're always coming up with new tricks! I just get the cheapest fare for a decent schedule and airline, and that's it - no fuss about FFPs or whatever. Happy Cruising, CruiseNY

Aha, now I see . I'd fly all the way to the UK for 7 days on a ship though! This I assume is your Norwegian Star cruise? It should be an interesting trip, for a Fred. Olsen fan on NCL what with Freestyle etc. I will be very interested in your opinion on just how all that Freestyle works - it is alien to me. Alien is also what you will be called all the time on your cruise - or have you been on a US-based ship before? I'm not one, but I feel sorry for all those alien friends I meet on my cruises... gohaze:I too am going to be doing just that for the first time ever. Driving from my place to Canada Place, cruise, and then come home. After 35 or so cruises, this will be the first where I will not have the hassle of flying, waking up way to early etc. I am quite excited - I only wish I could cruise this way all the time! But then, just how many times can one keep going to Alaska! It just sounds sooooooooo civilized and relaxing though - exactly how a cruise should begin!

Hello,From the point of view of not flying to cruise, I think Vancouver must be one of the best places to live. That's primarily because the cruises from Vancouver are now pretty cheap. Those from New York are so expensive that we don't take them. Mostly because of under-capacity. Those from Vancouver, have over-capacity. By the way, even if you don't live there, Vancouver must be one of the nicest places to start a cruise. Canada Place is very nice, and the airport is very good. The nicest one in Canada, I think, at least until renovations at Pearson and Dorval are complete. I would say that NY, from the point of view of someone flying in, must be one of the worst places. Our airports must be awfully intimidating to an out-of-towner (to many NYers too!), our cruise terminals are equally dumpy, and the ride in between must be hell. Of course, I've never had to do it ! There are lots of (to me) interesting itineraries from the UK. But they are expensive, for British, even if you drive to cruise. However, destinations are more interesting than Bermuda. I like Alaska very much though. So I guess Vancouverites have it best from this point of view. Oops, almost forgot Floridians. Very cheap, lots of variety, but boooring (yawn) destinations. And lots and lots of big-box megaliners that all look and feel identical. Happy Cruising, CruiseNY

Hi NY...you've touched on a few things of interest here. YVR has actually been voted the best airport in North America and they're still working on it. For all those American visitors using it for cruises this summer, the departure tax you pay is wholly committed to improvements. YVR is a locally operated Authority, non profit at that, except that Ottawa takes out hundreds of Mils in so called rent. Non of the other airports in Canada pay that. And good flights to the Far East, Europe and SE Asia/ Australasia. The new third berth at Canada Place is now open a year ahead of schedule and big changes have been made inside the terminal. Some of the best deals are at the beginning and end of the season when the repos head for Alaska and down South for the Carib. Same in reverse and then even from the Far East. We did one of those on the Sky Princess from Japan, Korea, Vladivostok, then North of the Aleutians (that was the old Empress route) to Dutch Harbour. I remember JFK, Royal Cruise, of fond memory, used to have someone meet their pax and make sure they made their connections. We did YVR - JFK and then to JNL on South African non-stop..at that time the longest in the world. Then the Blue Train to Cape Town to join the Star Odyssey. Great trip. ...peter
