I was just reading in a travel agent magazine that Disney Cruise Line may opt to build another ship or two and sail from LA to Mexico. They would pair the cruises with a stay at Disneyland similiar to the current cruise vacations offered by DCL out of Florida . The article also said that they would think of repositiong the ship on Alaska cruises for the summer.

Sounds interesting!

Yes, interesting.

I wonder if a third Disney ship would be a carbon-copy of Magic and Wonder, or a new design?

Maybe it would like more like an Ocean Liner than the QM2?

There has been speculation about a third Disney ship for at least 2 years. Two things have prevented the ship from being built at this point. First, the downturn in the U.S. economy a few years ago- the cruise industry just is not growing the way it did in the 90's. And secondly, most shipyards have been full of orders from other lines (that was one reason Princess chose to build their new ships in Japan).

With most of those new ships now coming on line the yards are opening up- there have been virtually no new ship orders this past year. I would not be surprised if Disney announced a new ship in the next 9-12 months.

Early speculation was that Disney would put the new ship in Europe and link it with Euro Disneyland in France. But the West coast of the U.S. also seems like a logical choice.

LA is not a very good port.
First of all, the port taxes are expencive, Second, the winter season is long and slow.

RCCL moved Viking Serenade out of there without replacing her

Malcolm I think the only ocean liner that we are going to see in our time is the new QM2.

Oh, I don't know? If I live long enough, I might see a new Cunard Ocean Liner in 2044, as the QM2 is built to last 40 years?

Interesting point Malcolm. It probably will happen- Cunard is a name that will last forever. But, it may not take 40+ years for an ocean liner other than QM2 to be built. Cunard has an option on a second 150,000 ton ship, though I doubt the market exists for two ships of that size in transat service- if the ship is built, it will probably be a large cruise ship loosely based on QM2 as opposed to a true running mate, but at least the possibility of building two liners is there. The new Disney ship(s) will at least LOOK like liners from the outside, but it is there the similiaraties will end.
