I've recently discovered (through another site) the existance of a company in the Netherlands called HAL Investments... This is the new name of the former Holland America Line.

When Carnival took over HAL in 1989, the old owners stayed in business becoming a "diversified investment company" of sorts...

In a way, they are still in the shipping business... They own a majority interest in Anthony Veder, who specialize in transportation of liquified gas...

http://www.anthonyvader.nl

A far cry from the old NASM though!

Other markets in which companies they own all or part of operate in:

- office furnishings and supplies
- identification and timing systems
- dredging services
- touring coaches
- business news radio
- retail vison centers (eyeglass shops)
- on-line European financial prospectus database
- financial newspaper
- inland shipping
- container depot and repair service
- manufacture and distribution of personal protective equipment
- specialty printing and publishing for business-to-business segment
- development and sales of navigational systems for automobiles
- time-share Embassy Vacation Resort in Hawaii
- supplier of timbers and building materials
- retail hearing aid shops
- aviation services
- manufacture and sales of high pressure laminates
- logistics and distribution services to the chemical and oil industry and end users of chemicals

Quite a broad range of interests I must say... Some of these companies are wholly owned subsidiaries, more are ones where HAL has
a majority holding, and the majority HAL has a holding of one-third or so... Quite impressive.

However they don't use the "Holland America Line" name, just the NASM house flag (their logo) and the "HAL" acronym (their corporate name is HAL Investments).

I wonder if these people maintain any connection at all with the current Holland America Line?

Their site is:

At one point in late 1995, when Kloster was on the verge of bankruptcy, HAL Investment Trust was keen to purchase Royal Cruise Line. Kloster decided not to sell and instead folded the Royal Cruise operations. Many ex-Royal employees are now at HAL.

Interesting bit of information Ted... I wonder if HAL has ever had any more thoughts of getting back into the cruise industry?

It would have been nice to see Royal saved... It is a shame what NCL did .

I guess we now know why Holland America, the cruise company, never kept the old NASM house flag.

The present houseflag (blue-white-blue with oval)is the 4th houseflag of the company.

Willem - do you have a picture of the present houseflag?

I thought it was an orange background, with the HAL logo on it (the one with the modern and sailing ships).

Has it changed since?

Yes, on 30 October 2000, during christening of m.s. Amsterdam, the new houseflag was introduced.

Willem...while aboard the Rotterdam in June I inquired about the "new" houseflag and was told by one of the officers that it is actually an older flag than the NASM flag and they are now using it again. Is this true?? I only remember the old NASM flag and the former orange flag with the two ships.

1st Houseflag: green-white-green with NASM in the white banner
2nd houseflag: orange with the three waves
3rd houseflag: orange with the oval (Nieuw Amsterdam and Henry Hudson's ship - can't remember the name at the moment)
4th houseflag: blue-white-blue with the oval

Green-white-green are the colours of the city of Rotterdam where the NASM was founded in 1873.

Interesting - I didn't know that was what it represented... When was the oval introduced? In 1938 with Nieuw Amsterdam II?

Hudson's ship was the Half Moon.

Thanks Willem! I thought he was wrong as I thought the original one for HAL was the green and white NASM flag, followed by the HAC waves (which I hated).

I just remembered the name of Henry Hudson's ship.

The 'Halve Maen' (Half Moon)

I understood from a HAL official at the time that the reason that the HAL house flag was changed from an orange background with the big ship/little ship oval to a blue/white/blue background (same oval) in December 2000 was to reflect the blue and white colour scheme of the HAL fleet. Something also about reflecting the new Millenium but that was corporate PR.
