I was watching "So Graham Norton" on BBC America (which I love BTW), and on came a new Celebrity Cruises commercial.

To be honest, at first I did not know it was for Celebrity. The screen is all white, and there are a series of shots with people wearing white "Celebrity" t-shirts. In the background, are voices announcing things like "Mr. Thompson's 5pm massage is confirmed", or "Ms. Jones midnight pizza is on it's way". The idea is that at first glance you think all these people are real celebrities, being pampered the way celebrities are. In actuality, you realize these are ordinary passengers being pampered on a Celebrity cruise.

At the very end, a giant Celebrity funnel sails onto the screen... and of course you can't miss the big "X".

I absolutely LOVE the commercial, and it's the most original and innovative cruise line commercial I have seen.

FYI, Celebrity has also updated their website with the new logo (which I happen to like), and there is also a contest where you can win a cruise per year for the next ten years. The commercial also mentions the contest, and of course I have entered.

Great job Celebrity!! ...... this certainly beats "simply the best" and "exceeding expectations" by a long shot. If this is the "new" Celebrity, more power to them...... makes me want to book a Celebrity cruise, which I suppose means the commercial is working!

I've not seen it.

We do noy get too many Cruise Lines advertised here on UK TV. I think I've only seen Celebrity, RCI and Maybe P&O in the past? It is pretty rare.

Malcolm,
It's funny because the commercial was on BBC, but of course it's the US version called BBC America so the commercials are American.

I have not seen the ad on any other network, although I admit to not watching the main networks (ABC, NBC, CBS), except for a few select shows like West Wing. I'm a HBO, Showtime kind of guy. Besides, HBO has the best written original shows on TV. They are brilliant!

Never knew that existed ! Obviously I don't get it... (My local cable company is called Stingycable )

I haven't seen it, and probably won't for some time. Unless they run it during the news, or the two or three shows I actually watch, it will be a while...

I saw my first RCCL ad in a month or more a few days ago... For a time I thought they'd stopped running them ...

As for the "main networks" - most of the stuff on them is pretty awful... The only thing funny about many of their "comedies" is that people actually think they're funny ! I do like the West Wing though, as you said... At least it's a drama that's actually dramatic!

Cruiseny - As well read as you are I'm surprised you haven't heard of BBC America. Most cable companies don't carry it but you can get the BBC and a miriad of other channels on Dish Network. It's not that much more than cable and in some areas even cheaper. If you speak any other languages they also offer quite a few foreign add-on packages.

It's well worth looking into. Tell your folks it will further your education. However I doubt you could talk them into the Playboy channels.

Oh I see, it's a satellite channel... No wonder I haven't heard of it...

We actually just got cable this summer (yes, I know, nobody uses an antenna any more ...) and looked at the satellite options but our cable company charges a rather large extra surcharge on Internet access if you don't use their (grossly overpriced) cable TV... So that's the only option... DSL is $50 a month, cable-modem is the same if you have cable TV, but if you get cable TV they'll sell you cable-modem access for a measly $30 extra... And then the satellite companies charge extra for each and every television... Which means it ends up to be $20+ extra per month (for us). So, no BBC America for me... Oh well. At least now we've gone into the 1980s, televison-wise ...

So, in short, the reason is that the business plan of our cable company is that they bait you into cable TV by offering their (outstanding) Internet access for a low price... And I don't think anyone in my family watches anywhere near enough televison to justify anything else (of all the channels, we do get, I'd say we watch about ten).

Lorraine - From what I can tell, the contest is only on the US site. When you go to

www.celebrity-cruises.com

they ask you in which country you live then direct you to that site. I saw the contest on the US site but not the UK site.

eroller, book your Celebrity Cruise.

I did 3 with them in 1998, 1999 and 2000 and before this 6 with CHANDRIS, in 1983, 1990, 1992, 1993 (2) and 1996.

I regret no Mark.

Lorraine :

Almost without exception Canadians are not welcome as contest entrants either and I doubt that we're eligible for UK ones either (never tried it!).

Happy cruisin'

Mark,
Like you, I have also sailed with Celebrity three times. They are probably my favorite large cruise line, although I have not sailed with them in several years. My absence was not due to any dissatisfaction, but just the way things worked out. I hope to get back on them soon, and the new commercial only increases my anticipation!

Best,

Just for the H... of it, I find that Canadian can enter - however my entry was returned as incomplete because I did not enter my Province - actually there was no way to enter it - all US States are shown but none of Canada's Provinces. I messed about with it for a bit and again left it blank AND HIT 'SUBMIT' - 2nd try it took - then the clincher - Celebrity would like to have names and e-mails of 10 friends "to enhance your chance of winning" -

IT'S NOTHING MORE THAN A PLOY TO GET e-mail ADDRESSES!

Actually, Green, I just entered with no problem. Typed in BC for the Province and it was there. I was at www.celebritycruises.com and from there you tell them whether you're in the US or Canada and it keeps track for the next time you visit. Try that!

I left the Province blank ,entered Canada in caps -it worked - back came an acknowledgement - they'll send me an e-mail when (wishful thinking!) I win!
