According to Cruise News Daily
"Carnival's unhappiness with the lack of clearance beneath the now-well-known power lines stretching across the Mississippi below New Orleans and the power company's reluctance to start moving toward a solution now has Carnival president Bob Dickinson speaking publicly about the possibility of having to take Carnival Conquest out of New Orleans in a couple of months."

The site also adds that "the Carnival chief says if the power line situation doesn't get resolved sooner rather than later, the ship will have to be taken out of New Orleans and probably homeported in Mobile."

Does that mean Carnival will take both the Conquest and the Inspiration(I think) out of New Orlean? If this is really to happen, what is CCL thinking of?

Keitaro:
OK! Just what is the clearance between the power lines and the funnel? (In feet please).

cncservo, this from MaritimeMatters

CARNIVAL CONQUEST Out of New Orleans?
November 20: CARNIVAL CONQUEST sailed from the Port of New Orleans on her maiden voyage November 15. But there is a problem brewing, there is a point down the Mississippi River where a power line dips to 176 feet at its lowest point above the water. The ship is 208 feet at the highest point and manoeuvered around the low hanging line. But when the river rises this coming winter, the power line will prevent CARNIVAL CONQUEST from reaching New Orleans. Bob Dickinson, President of Carnival Cruise Lines, said "If we don't get that resolved", "we may be in Gulfport, whether we want to be in Gulfport or not." Port of Gulfport officials had recent talks with Carnival about the availability of their docks. Estimates suggest that raising the power lines over the Mississippi River could run in to millions of dollars.

I am surprised that an experienced ship operator like Carnival did not check this out before deciding to homeport the Conquest in a place like New Orleans.

The power company that owns the lines promised (over a year ago) that the lines would be raised. But I hear "Louisiana politics" are standing in the way of that. Holiday is the only other ship in New Orleans (Inspiration is in Tampa now and will no longer call on New Orleans because they finally gave her a better itinerary) and the power line situation does not affect the Holiday.

How in the world does a ship that is 208 feet above the water and only twenty three or so feet below the water ever keep from flipping over. It has to be top heavy.
