I went to the Rotterdam Maritime Museum twice, in April 2000, and April 2002; just before Onno joined cruisetalk.
A sister of mine lives there and I visit every 2 years.
It is a fantastic museum with several restored ships. The Bufel of 1871 stands out. It is the example for the Queen Mary and SS RotterdamV to follow. It is completely original and beautiful inside and out. In 2000 the museum had on display a 5' cut away model of the Statendam III with every piece of furniture inside. There was an exhibit of the development of RotterdamV including the builders plans. Onno has photos of the alternative designs on his website.
The Hotel New York is the former HAL world headquarters. I have stayed there in 1994 and the rooms have steamer trunks instead of closets. There are several models of the Nieuw Amsterdam of 1938 there and HAL memorobilia.
If anyone visits Rotterdam it is a great city and less expensive than Amsterdam. The Hotel Bazar on the Witte de Witthstraat is a favorite of mine.
Rembrandterdam as she is, is full of inside jokes and metaphors about Dutch culture.

Hi,
If it is not too much trouble for you, would you please be so kind to write some kind of report about what you have seen in Freeport and send that to me? The Steamship Rotterdam Foundation as well as me are very anxious to know how 'our' ship is doing.
Thanks,
Willem
We left Freeport after dusk as a few sparse lights appeared on Rembrandt and all I could think was "ghost ship". Of course, the weather and neglect are starting to show and she is looking badly in need of care and attention.
Some stewards who had lived and worked on her lingered at Lido windows sadly looking out at her. Few could find words to speak their thoughts.

She was tied up off Amsterdam's port side as we docked very near her. She looked bleak and deserted. It must have been very sad for Captain Van Zanne (who was our Captain) to view her like that as she was his first ship as an HAL Captain. We left Freeport after dusk as a few sparse lights appeared on Rembrandt and all I could think was "ghost ship". Thank you for this information. I have send it to the chairman of the Steamship Rotterdam Foundation.
I certainly can imagine the sad feelings of the captain and other former crewmembers. I myself as an old crewmember would not have looked very happy either.
