NCL will create a new brand for it's US flag Hawaii ships. NCL wants to become known as the "Hawaii Specialist".

From the article:

"The line plans to create a related brand name for its Hawaii product that reflects the US-flag aspect."

What exactly to they mean by a related brand name? Here are my guesses:

Norwegian Hawaii Cruises NHC
Norwegian Hawaii Line NHL (bad hocky link)
Norwegian Aloha Line NAL
Norwegian Aloah Cruises NAC
or how about the resurrection of
Norwegian America Line NAL

What would be nice is if NCL's Hawaii brand kept the same funnel design and logo as NCL- but changed the colors to red, white, and blue- not just the blue and white of NCL...

NCL's parent company, Star Cruises, has a funnel that is red on top, and blue on the bottom. In Hawaii NCL could use this same format.

Somebody with photoship skills should get working on that for us. Maybe change the NCL logo on the funnel as well to "NAL" or "ACL".

Here I go again: ditch the "Norwegian" part of the company's name. There is little value to it.

If they insist on branding the Hawaii line, I would suggest Aloha Star Cruises or American Star Line. Ties in the name of the parent company, yet gives a US/Homeland flavour to it.

I believe they want a "related" name for the Hawaii brand because they want people to see it as part or related to NCL... that way they can strengthen NCL.

The hope is cruisers will flock to Hawaii, be impressed the the cruise product, and then try other NCL ships and cruises. For that reason I don't think NCL will be keen on dropping the "norwegian" part of the name for the Hawaii brand.

Although I've been wrong in the past.

Why not rename the whole operation National Cruise Lines? That way the can keep the NCL moniker.

Perhaps they will not include the name "Norwegian" in the title at all. Carnival Corp. did not add "Carnival" to any of the other lines it has bought over the years, nor did Royal Caribbean add thier name to the Celebrity Cruises title. In fact, NCL/Star did not change the Orient Lines name when it was purchased. There really is no need to add "Norwegian" at all. Travel agents will know who the line belongs to and if they are at all like Carnival, the guests will know too if they happen to turn on their in-cabin TV. Carnival shows promotional videos all day long on one of the channels advertising all the member lines of the "World's Greatest Cruise Lines" all of which belong to Carnival Corp. So, in my opinion, forget the name "Norwegian" for the Hawaii ships and bring back United States Lines, the name of the line that was to originally operated the "Project America" ships. Perhaps NCL bought the rites to the name at the same time they bought the uncompleted ship(s).

I agree too, i hope they bought the rights to United States Line
about the "norwegian" title...
Lets not forget that their used to be Norwegian Capricorn Line...owned by NCL (now non-existant due to the Star Cruises take-over)

maybe they could even have "American Cruise Line"...???....Norwegian Star could become American Star...and they could have names like American Dream, Patroit, Freedom, Idependence, etc....

Before they annouced that it will have to do with US-flag aspect...I was thinking that maybe they would even bring back Majesty Cruise Line...I think they have the rights to it because they bought Majesty Cruise Line and got the Norwegian Majesty (ex-Royal Majesty) and Norwegian Dynasty (ex-Crown Majesty...now Braemer...)

Any thoughts?
Brian

Hopefully soon. The first Project America ship is due for completion in about one year (spring 2004). So I imagine bookings will open in the next few months... That means NCL will have to show itineraries, deck plans, and prices soon- not to mention all the marketing for a new brand name.

I still think NCL wants a "related brand" name that will reveal both a connection to NCL and to being US flagged.

Picking a name that NCL may come close too is going to be difficult, but I would say using a name they already have the rights to would be their best move, and United States Lines or even Star Pacific Cruises or Aloha Norweigan Cruises.

Maybe they will go with Norweigan Star Cruises, plain and simple and gets the point out.

I agree they should name the new Project America ships something like Aloha America and Aloha Pacific.

Or even Star Pacific and Star America. That would work with the Star connection!

What ship will they reflag, anyone know? Norweigan Star I would think, and what about the Norway, she would be good for the Hawaiian Islands until 2010!

I think The Norway could do well their, what a great way to spend her final years cruising Hawaii.

No company that was ever nicknamed "No Class Left" should be allowed to revive Norwegian-America, they were one of the best in the business, it would be a sacrelige to have that brand affiliated with NCL.

That said, Norwegian Aloha and Norwegian Hawaii (or Hawaiian) sound logical, but if past history is any indication, they will try to keep the "NCL" acronym. Can anyone think of a word that has to do with Hawaii or the US in general that begins with "C"- I'm stumped.
