What do you all think will be the effect on the cruise industry of the upcoming war? Obviously it will slow everything down, but do you think it will reach the point that smaller lines will need to call bankruptcy and larger lines will need to cut back on services?

Good question.

Americans in particular seem to be nervous travellers in times of threat of war. Although in my opinion there is little reason why American tourists should not continue cruise the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and Europe?

Yes, I think you are right about the smaller cruise lines. Many suffered after the tragic events of 9/11.

There is no Reason, not to book an Cruise.

And because this Fact, i booked one: CONSTELLATION, starting April 26th from San Juan to Harwich.

I think the War will be an short Event.

Smaller Companies will go into Bankruptcy, Prices will go down, but People will not forget, how good and what a Pleasure Cruises are.

I will NEVER STOP CRUISING!!

...and I prefer CHANDRIS-CELEBRITY.

I think alot of the classic older ships will go off to the breakers as a result. Too many newbuildings chasing war-wary pax, and oil prices too high to operate the older ships economically.

I absolutely agree that there should be no reason to stop cruising. . .cruise/civilian boats are almost never targeted (I can't think of any. . unless the Lusitania counts). And hey. . .if they prices go down, why not??

I think the major negative effect will be on the airlines. People don't want to fly and cruise lines would be wise to offer more ports where people can cruise without flying. Round-trip cruises out of New York are selling very well with 20 million people living within driving distance of the port.

I would think that cruises in the Mediterranean would be dead in the water-no pun intended if Bush goes ahead with the war.
