Celebrity Cruises’ Zenith will sail 13 cruises from Jacksonville, Florida, making it the first cruise ship to operate regularly from the port. The season of 11- to 14-night voyages -- some to as far away as the Panama Canal -- will operate from October 26 to April 22. The 1,374-passenger vessel will sail from Jacksonville Port Authority’s (JAXPORT) Dames Point Marine Terminal.
JAXPORT chairman Marty Fiorentino called the news ‘a defining moment for JAXPORT and the city of Jacksonville.’ Homeporting cruise ships will bring exposure to northeastern Florida and generate jobs and new economic impact, Fiorentino predicted.

Celebrity said it will evaluate the strength and depth of the cruise market following Zenith’s six-month season and confirmed the potential to permanently homeport a vessel in the city in 2004.

Joint JAXPORT-cruise line market research indicated that many people within a six-hour drive of Jacksonville –- as far north as Charlotte and Atlanta –- either do not cruise now or do not cruise as much as they would like because of the expense and hassles of air travel or the need to drive long distances to existing cruise ports. Jacksonville "International" Airport http://www.jaxairports.org/ but it seems from schedules there are no Int'l flights, not from Europe anyway, so you'd have to change somewhere.

I'm pretty sure Delta has frequent service from Atlanta to Jacksonville.

I live outside of Jacksonville. As far as I know, there are no direct international flights into JAX.

Because of the slowdown in the air industry, some of the connector flights between Atlanta and JAX have been cancelled.

The port is an easy ride from the airport.

I'm very happy that HAL is starting to use JAX as a port. It will save me a two-hour drive to Port Canaveral, a four-hour drive to Tampa or a six-hour drive to Miami.

Jacksonville has been courting the cruise industry since it put in its successful bid for the Superbowl. Because there were insufficient hotel rooms, the city officials offered to use cruise ships docked on the river near the stadium.

More hotels have been built, and the need for cruise ships during the Superbowl has decreased. I believe there will still be a few because the city promised them.

It remains to be seen how viable JAX is as a tourist destination. There is golf, a number of national seashores, Amelia Island and St. Augustine.

I think JAX could be a good terminus for my ro-pax service .

Either that or Port Canaveral.

Tampa is on the west coast, thus too far, and south Florida is too far south that it excludes the northern and central parts (people from the north will not want to go south and then north to get to their destination).
