Now I understand the need for cruise lines to protect themselves from liabilities by having detailed "cruise contracts" included in their tickets, but is the following paragraph really needed?

From Section B (The Cruise or Cruisetour)

2) Hostilities: Although unlikely, the Ship may be confronted by actual or threatened war, warlike operations or hostilities. In addition to our right to deal with this situation under our general right to respond to safety concerns, we may also decide that it would be prudent for the Ship to sail with or without lights, omit observance of practices, rules and regulations as to navigation, cargo or other applicable in time of peace, or sail armed or unarmed with or without convoy.

I noticed this passage in cruise tickets for the Amsterdam for an upcoming sailing.

Good one! I'd say the Finns, Swiss, and Israelis are certainly the best prepared for contingencies. Where do you keep getting these?

The lawyers are as usual responsible for most of the unintelligible nonsense found on all tickets. This is of course so that they can argue about the real meaning through several layers of increasingly costly Courts.
Bottom feeders!!!!!

I understand that the American government has considered this type of event. Various groups have actually run practice rescue exercises.

These exercises were run long before the Iraqi war.

It is a bad state of affairs when this kind of planning is needed.

I don't think planning like this is needed - it's paranoia run amok! I mean, if an area is so dangerous that liners have to be armed, run without lights at night and sail in convoy or with military escort, cruise lines would send their ships elsewhere! People don't book pleasure cruises in war zones.

Yes, a crisis can erupt suddenly. Cruise lines alter itineraries all the time. Serious escalation in a trouble spot happens over weeks and months, and thus cruise lines can take adequate security precautions when and where needed.

I don't think that's an indication that the cruise line thinks there is a danger of that happening... It's just in there.

I'd be interested if anyone has some pre-9/11 tickets saved, if you could look in there and see if that was in there then. I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

The point of it really is, that they will put every single contingency they can imagine in that contract, so that in the extraordinarily unlikely event that it does happen, they won't be in trouble.

It doesn't hurt to have stuff like that in their contracts, so why not? It's like a sort of insurance.

Read anything and you will find a ridiculous amount of fine print...

I've read the fine print in the contracts before each cruise I've been on (Maasdam in 1998 and Veendam in 2000). That paragraph wasn't there. I think it's post 911.

I've checked other lines' contracts (prior to giving my clients their cruise documents) and only Holland America has this ... so far.
