I know we've done this before but if you had the capital for a cruise line, what ships would you operate, what market would you seek, and what routes would you offer? My cruise line would be American-Mediterranean Lines. Ships would be.....
M.S. Freeport King- U.S. Built and Registered 15,000grts- 2 days from Ft. Lauderdale alternating between Nassau and Freeport and 3 days from Ft. Lauderdale to Nassau or Freeport.Summer cruises to Bermuda from NY.

M.S. Antigua- Italian built and flagged 38,500 gross tons- 7 day S. Caribbean to St. Thomas,(the not so great but ever essential Caribbean stop )Antigua, Aruba, Curacao, and Martinique from San Juan.

M.S. American Star-American built and flagged-25,000 gross tons- 7 day port to port Alaska and 7 day Hawaii from Maui.

T.S.S. Italian Star-Italian built and flagged 38,500 gross tons-7 days from Genoa to Sardinia,Capri, Palmero, and Naples alternating with 7 day cruises to the Canary Islands from Barcelona when regular Mediterranean is off season.

I'll post drawings when my arm heals. What do you think and what are your dream cruise lines???

Explore Cruise Line. My first ship would be the Tropical Explorer. It would be the Majesty of the Seas. It would travel NYC to Bermuda from May to Mid September, then NYC to the Caribbean for the winter. If I had other ships they would have their destination ni the name. For instance, European Explorer would go to Europe. Then during the winter go to the Caribbean or Mexican Riviera. The Caribbean Explorer would do Caribbean all year. I would try to get some of my Caribbean out of Florida or Texas, but i would like them out of New York.

If I had a cruise line and ships I dont know what the ships would be or the line name but I would have some travel from NYC to Bermuda and to Philly if possible and Newport Rhode Island and Nassau and back to NYC for about 10-12 days for probably the April or May-Sept or Oct.I also would also have some go from Southampton to Le Havre and then to NYC and back for probably about 13-16 days or something similar and I also would do Ft Lauderdale to Nassau and Ocho Rios plus to Cozumel,Mexico and through the Panama Canal and to Grand Cayman and back and it would be probably around 12-15 days.I would also do NYC to Nassau and Cozumel,Mexico and back for around a week. Also L.A to Hawaii and around there for maybe 5 days plus 8 days through Alaska from Vancouver to a few places.I woud have to be very creative in order to figure out a line and ships.

It's so difficult to find a good name for a cruise line today.... I should ask to NCL to sell their rights on the now defunct Royal Cruise Line...

My cruise line would be called Fresh and would be a totally all inclusive cruise line, mainly aimed at the 20+ age range offering an introduction to the world of cruising. It would aim to get people hooked.

The ships would not be the ultra hugelarge modern ones in order to keep the prices lower and would not be so family oriantated like the ships aimed at the market today. Sort of a floating Sandals.

It would be the Canary Island during the UK Summer and then the Carribean during the Winter.

Chapels and honeymooners would be made to feel special as well as all passengers on board, food would be english tastes but modern chefs creating interesting dishes.

Decor would be modern but plush with traditonal wooden decking.

All ships would be white and the funnel red, no other tackey or 'artistic' graphics on the hull.

Ships :

MS Polaris :

MS Oriana - formal adults only crusing experince, people would be encouraged to dress up and experince crusing at its best, it would be ashame to dress down this ship. This would be a Canary Ship in summer and carribean in winter.

MS Propus :

MS Aurora - much the same as Oriana again child free, but offering a more casual crusing experince while retaining the high standards of service, waiter service at restaurants and a cabin service. No formal nights, Canary Islands summer and carribean in winter.

MS Pollux :

MS CostaAtlantica - this would be the family ship, children made welcome and dedicated facilities. Crusing Carribean in winter and the Med/Europe in the summer. Casual crusing, no formal nights.

MS Pleione :

MS Braemar - small ship dedicated to traditional crusing around the colder climates (Norway). Formal wear throughout.

All UK Registered and have English officers and entertainment staff but the crew would be indonesian.

I would have 2-3 ships of around 15,000 GRT that cruised the Great Lakes in the summer/fall, and do South America/Antarctice in the winter/spring.

Scratch that, Columbus Pleasure.

Here is my idea of a club cruise line. The name of the cruise line will be fUSION, a division of Princess Cruise Lines. The ships will be 50,000 tons and will be based in the Carribean, South Pacific, ASia, and Europe year Round. Here are the ship names.

Fusion Breeze- Year-ROund Carribean out of Barbados, calling at Martinique, St Marrten, St Thomas, and San Juan.

Fusion Quest- Year round Asia and South Pacific out of Bangkok and Sydney. Asia stops at Da Nang, Macau, Hong Kong, Nagasaki, Kobe, Guam, Taipei, and Ho Cho Min City.
South Pacific stops at Wellington, New Caledonia, New Guinea, Sumbawa, and Bali.

Fusion Sea- Year round Europe out of Genoa. Naples, Venice, Dubrovink, Piraeus, Crete, and Marseille.

Both Ships will have a design that's based on AIDA sisters. More to come soon.

Interesting idea. I would love to see AIDA style cruises in the N. America market... with all new hardware like AIDA has. I think the AIDA ships are some of the most interesting concepts around today... and the ships are quite attractive as well, inside and out. I love those sterns!

Oh yes thank you Rex for bringing up the Great Lakes. I would have a a 5,000grt American built, flagged, and staffed operating in the Great Lakes when the season's right. It would sort of look like the steamers of the late 20's like Evangeline only it would meet S.O.L.A.S. regulations of course. After Great Lakes become out of Season a trans- canal cruise puts her on 2 day cruises to Catalina Island and 3 days to Ensanada. Her name would be Coastal Adventurer. I think I would even choose the name Celestial Lines, it sounds much more unique.

The Great Lakes are the last cruising frontier....your ships sound similar to the Cape Sisters that Delta had built, but a bit larger

I would like to see a cruise line in North America similar in concept to Ocean Village or Aida- a club ship experience designed for a younger more active crowd. I would call it:

oceanBLUE voyages (not 'cruises')

Ships would be 50,000-70,000 tons with significant space devoted to fitness, sports, and leisure activities. I'd like to see a retractable watersports marina like on the Seabourn ships only larger. Dinning would include three types: traditional dinning room, alternative restaurants, and food court style.

Cruises would be sold in two packages. Either "All-inclusive" which would include all onboard activities, food, and drinks. Or "Pay as you go" where dinning and drinks are not included in the fare.

Itineraries would be a little off the beaten path, and include more active shore excursions like biking and rock climbing.

Ship names:

blueDOLPHIN
blueMARLIN
blueCORAL
blueSURF

I have actually designed the ships using photoshop but am having difficulty uploading them to the cruise photo section of the site... they are probably too large.

Another idea! A cruise line using an older ship around 500-700 passengers sailing out of Vancouver to Victoria and Seattle on 2,3 and 4 day cruises. Also doing 2-3 day weekend cruises to Nowhere from Vancouver! Also 4 and 5 day cruises from Seattle to Victoria, cruising Inside Passage,Desolation Sound and the BC Coast to Prince Rupert, returning calling at Masset,Queen Charlotte Islands, Uculet and Friday Harbour,San Juan Islands to Seattle.

I believe Cruises to Nowhere and short 2-3 day cruises out of Vancouver are a Must as their are a lot of people in Southern BC who have never been on a cruise and a perfect 2-3 night getaway to gamble and have fun while enjoying the spectactular Gulf Islands and many of BC's beautiful Inlets and Cruising the Inside Passage!

The poplulation of Southern BC is close to 2 million plus, so the market is their!! I would do this mid Apr-mid Oct. And then send her to San Fransisco to do 7 day cruises to the Mexican Riviera.

OK, I've got to jump in on this one .

Two ship line (no name right now - leave that to the "marketing" types )... The two ships being ASSEDO and TARAS SHEVCHENKO (hope I got the second name right ). Refurbished like MARCO POLO, but a decade ahead inside (obviously). What would be different? First, the cruise line would be different. These ships wouldn't be utilized on "generic" Euro-itineraries in the summer, they would have GENUINE interesting itineraries all the time. With destination-oriented lecturers (cut out in Europe on Orient)! Your lecture program will eliminate the need for "the show", the ship would certainly have different bars and lounges with forms of musical entertainment, but no production shows. I don't need 'em, and the target passenger of this cruise line (if they exist) wouldn't either!

The refurbishment itself would (unlike Orient's) take advantage of an original feature of the ship - all-outside cabins! True, the originals were "long and narrow", but get rid of every third or fourth one, and voila, you have the space to make them long and less narrow . Also, Bridge Deck would not be extended all the way aft (hurts the profile and adds more pax). The result would be fewer pax (550), and larger, all-outside cabins (skillfully designed to take advantage of the space, focusing on storage space, sleeping space, bathing and washing space, etc., and not on "sitting areas" in cabins that are too darn small for it - a pet peeve on modern ships, and something many ship designers would jump right on considering the above about "larger, all-outside cabins"...). The basic layout of the ship (other than cabins) would likely wind up pretty similar to MARCO POLO, but with a real main lounge (seating all pax) instead of a "showroom", no casino (no bingo, no art auctions ...), and various other changes. Basically a hybrid between the original and MARCO POLO's layout. Dining room and main lounge would be enlarged a bit to fit all pax at one sitting (and none of this silly, Cunard-style stuff where you have an assigned table and seating, but not an assigned TIME - it sounds extremely odd).

What else? I can't think of much else right now, I think you get the basic idea... Seeing as NCL seems to be slowly killing Orient, there may be a need for something to take its place in a few years , and what better than better versions of the same ship ?
