This report came out concerning Carnival Corp's newbuilding plans:

Commenting on the earlier decision to reduce Vista orders by one to four and to transfer one newbuild into a 116,000gt order for the Princess brand, Frank said it was not because of any dissatisfaction with Zuiderdam, the first of HAL's new series. 'Had we owned Princess back when we ordered the Vista class ships, we wouldn't have ordered as many,' Frank told Seatrade Insider. When the opportunity arose post-merger to rearrange newbuilds with Fincantieri, Carnival took it. 'It has nothing to do with the ship itself,' Frank added. 'Zuiderdam is performing very, very well.'

But Carnival's vision includes growing Princess at a faster rate. 'The idea in our minds is that the Princess brand is more scalable,' Frank said. 'Its market is broader than HAL's.'
-----------------------

Sounds to me like we should expect more orders for Princess before we see any more HAL ships. I'd hope they order more Coral-class ships... they seem to be popular- and a much better over all design than Zuiderdam-class.

Hang on? Is not the Princess fleet smaller than HAL's?

If this is the case, buying one ship for each fleet (for example) would mean the Princess fleet would grow quicker?

I think that in terms of passenger capacity Princess' fleet is bigger. And it will get even bigger as they debut Diamond/Caribbean class ships with large decreases in passenger space ratios.

I agree that Princess has a larger market because Princess is trying to be all things to all people. Personal Choice dining vs. Tradtional; small R-ships & Royal vs. Baby Grands/Grands/Grander Grands; catering to an older clientele vs. catering to families and children; month-long exotic itineraries on smaller ships vs. quick 7-days to the Caribbean on behemoths. There's a lot of diversity in the Princess product.

On the other hand, I see Carnival focusing HAL's brand identity along with building fewer ships to position it better against Celebrity.

Princess will be the all-in-one RCI/NCL fighter while HAL will be targeted against Celebrity. And perhaps there is some overlap with Carnival targeting RCI/NCL.

Personally I think they should leave those month-long exotic itineraries to HAL and Cunard... Princess is trying to hang on to a sliver of their past (those long itineraries) while moving in a completely different direction (tons of post-Panamax ships, Personal Choice, etc.).

I agree.

Perhaps Tahitian/Pacific Princess will transfer to HAL one of these days... when Royal is gone... and the Princess fleet will only consist of Grand-class derivatives.

I agree. I think we should expect Carnival Corp to push Princess into the mass market vigorously. I'm sure we are just a few years away from a Princess fleet of almost entirely Grand/Sun/Coral class ships with the majority being Grands.

I would also expect Princess to either limit or drop altogether their exotic sailings- instead focusing upon Alaska, Mexico, Caribbean, Europe... with secondary markets in Hawaii, New England, and Panama Canal.

I find it a shame. Princess was once a premium cruise line with global appeal and elegance. But as of late they have become an unfocused brand- and if Carnival Corp is good at anything it is focusing their brands.

Any bets on how long before HAL/Costa/Carnival/Cunard/ and Princess all share a hull design? Consolidation sucks.

Princess has been pushing Princess into the mass market vigorously for years . Perhaps at the beginning (mid 1990s) it wasn't intentional, but it's been happening for some time now, and now they're 99% of the way there.

Agreed. I think that's inevitable. I also think Princess was planning it that way anyhow, though with the extra capital of Carnival it might happen more quickly than it would have otherwise.

I think that will be a while. If anyone gets a new hull design it would be something for Carnival (bigger than anything else). As Princess already has their own current hull designs which are different from Carnival's I have a feeling Princess will keep going with the GRAND and CORAL-class while Carnival/Costa keep going with the SPIRIT- and the various variations on the DESTINY-class, and HAL and Cunard with the Vista-class. But what would P&O get if they get any newbuildings? VISTA-class, GRAND-class, or CORAL-class? Not likely to be anything totally new (like ORIANA and AURORA were) now that they're part of Carnival (it's surprising P&O Princess didn't have P&O and Princess using the same basic designs earlier than they did).

I think if P&O get any new ships they will either be transfered from Princess' fleet (Sun and Dawn Princess) or they will be Coral-class newbuilds.

Carnival would be foolish to give P&O a Vista ship when Cunard will be sailing Queen Victoria in the UK market. To have both major UK brands sail the exact same hull seems silly.

A few years ago Princess had planned to give P&O a Grand-class ship, so there is a precedent of P&O and Princess sharing hull designs. So, I think we may see a Coral-class ship in P&O's future... by the way such a ship would be the largest P&O ship ever. I'm sure they are itching to use the Canberra name again.

I don't know... More people might be put off than attracted by that name.

For instance, ROTTERDAM (IV) took a LOT of criticism from people who were basically just PO'd at HAL for getting rid of the old ROTTERDAM, and could not bear to actually like her replacement, however good or bad it might have been.

Some (most?) of these people seem to have later made peace with the new ship.

Even though ARCADIA was actually CANBERRA's stated replacement, it might still be too soon to use the name.

Of course why they chose the ridiculous name ADONIA is still beyond me, P&O/Orient have so many wonderful names in their history that they could have used!

If Princess focuses more on shorter cruises and bigger ships, wouldn't they lose many loyalists? Does anyone think Princess might get an altered version of the Destiny/Conquest-class?

The loyalists they have left are the people who like the shorter cruises and bigger ships. If anyone was going to stop being a Princess loyalist because of shorter cruises and bigger ships, they'd have done it already.

Princess has long been focusing on shorter cruises and bigger ships as much as they could have short of completely eliminating longer cruises and smaller ships, which is something they might have wanted to do, but perhaps couldn't afford.

I doubt it. Princess has the GRAND-class in that category.

Not only will Princess lose many loyalists but they HAVE BEEN losing loyalists. I am one of them.

But with the mixture of Personal Choice and Traditional dining Princess is trying to ween the old-timers off the old, stuffy way of Princess cruising and onto the new, hip-and-trendy way of Princess cruising.

Also, I imagine that if it hasn't happened already we will soon see strong marketing for HAL within Princess onboard future cruise offices targeted at the smaller-growing core of Princess faithful.

Basically, the way I see it, Carnival plans to attract new clientele with the reshaped, rebranded Princess while keeping any of those passengers not so comfortable with the new changes within the Carnival family on HAL or perhaps Cunard.

If there's anything Princess is not, it's hip and trendy. Just look at their ships - about as hip and trendy as your local Marriott!

You have to look at Princess in the context of the entire Carnival Corp. Here is how I see it being positioned:

Carnival: vegas at sea, glitz, party atmosphere (avg age: 35)
HAL: traditional, refined, premium (avg age: 55+)
Princess: mass market, vanilla, casual (avg age: 45)

Interesting, Fairsky (and I don't disagree with your demographic positioning descriptions). I would be interested in how you would describe the balance of the Carnival brands, i.e. Costa, Cunard, etc.

Ok, here is my understanding of Carnival Corp brands using ice cream desserts:

Carnival: Ben & Jerry's
Princess: Vanilla ice cream in a cake cone
HAL: Traditional sundae
Costa: Italian Ice
Seabourn: Bon Bons
Cunard: Hagen Das
Windstar: Frozen yogurt
