Costa Crociere announed today that they have signed an agreement with Telecom Italia to provide a mobile-net service onboard their cruiseships, even if far away from land.
The system will provide mobile-phone users from Europe to make or recieve their calls on own mobile-phone directly on the ship. Costs for this service will be at 5,40.-Euros per minute.
The contract has been signed for 5 years first. During this period Costa nad Telecom Italia want to check out this new facility and see if it will be useful for the passengers.

Cell phones on vacation!!! When will it end! I want to escape from reality for a week or two and not be bothered by the outside world. As far as I am concerned if someone needs to call me that bad they can do so with the regular phone or it can wait until I get back.

O no not again. I have make a cruise aboard the Costa romantica and some Italian passengers called mobile al the way at sea the had a special mobile. So It was then fun to see the Italians making there calls one there unique Italian manor.
But now with this new technic it would be madnes aboard the ships.

But iff there is a danger or dissaster on see we can call 911 ore the dutch number 112 for help.

I was on the Infinity with some very pushy and annoying people. I could never get away from them because all the cabins had voicemail on the phones. When I'd see them later I'd hear "I left you a voicemail...how come you didn't call me back?"

Phones for emergencies only. I'm on vacation. Leave me alone.

This is bad news!

I want less communication in the world, not more!

I dont know how good this is. I love being on cruises and being away from everything. I love having people say I couldnt reach you, and my reply was I wasnt reachable.
People go on cruises and vacation to get away from things. Now the excuse my cell phone didnt work, wont work anymore. Sometimes we must ask ourselves, just b/c we can do, should we?

later,
saf

Turn it off; switch off voicemail too when you go away. Just switch on when you need to make a call. Of course you can always "forget" the charger

Pam Hi,

I totally agree with you!

I am fortunate though, because when I sail from Keelung, heading towards Japan, I can only receive a signal for about one hour after departure.

But even if I could get a signal, my cell phone would still be put away in a drawer in my cabin, and switched off. I am on this ship for a short "getaway." If there is an emergency, I can always be contacted via international marine operator through the ship. I do leave the ships call sign and number with people, for an EMERGENCY ONLY!

I do not like hearing cell phones ringing, especially if it were mine, while I am trying to relax on deck, or watching a show. I find them very intrusive and annoying, as do I find those "shipboard Walkie Talkies."

That's my take on it.

Regards,
Mike

But this appears to be apt for Costa; it's those amourous Italians [apologies to our Italian posters]...

"The Italians own more mobile phones than any other Europeans, and - with divorce on the increase - is the mobile to blame?

"The love affair with the mobile phone in Italy is incredible... many people have two or three," says Miriam Tomponzi, Italy's most famous and definitely most glamorous private investigator.

A new survey published by Italy's largest private investigation company says that in nearly 90% of cases, it is the mobile phone which reveals or betrays extra marital activities. "

I always thought it was the Finnish who had the most mobiles in the past. The Italians seem to have taken over; I must admit I did notice their frequent use when over there. I am not sure why someone would have more than one in currents use though?

As to those Walkie Talkies Mike, they are even worse. A PITB on ships, but little used on non-US based ships ime. Don't know about your part of the World. Yes, we have some, but only used if we split up on shore [never on ship], or at a theme park or similar [to make sure we do eventually meet up again]. Most of the time they aren't charged or get carried around and never switched on anyway.

Pam [BBC report here]
