A local Greek paper reports that Stelios Hadjiioannou the founder of easygroup, seems to be quite interested in aquiring some of the ROC ships or the whole of ROC operations.

Who knows...

I guess we will have to wait.

Easyjet...hmmm I forgot all about this company. They had planned an easycruise concept, should be quite interesting to see what happens with them and ROC!

IMHO if Stelios wants to start something in the way of a cruise/ferry company, he'd be better off doing it from scratch. Totally aside from the fact that there is nothing out there like the concept he's proposed, the simple idea of owning a motley fleet of ships like ROC's completely violates the most basic principles of the easy concept. After all, you can only get one kind of easyrentacar (a Mercedes A-class), easyjet flies only one kind of airplane (Boeing 737, though they're going to replace them with Airbus A320 variants), and so on. I strongly feel that easyships (which I think would be a much better name than easycruises, a name I find misleading) would be best off with identical, purpose-built ships. Even if there were ships out there suited to their type of operations, standardization is a very, very integral part of the easy philosophy, and a lack of it would make this shipping venture stick out like a sore thumb within the easy group of companies.

Stelios has enough money and credibility that he should be able to start off the right way rather than undermining his business venture by buying out ROC and taking along their old ships and all the baggage that came with the company. Even if he just bought the ships and left the rest to die, it would be starting off on a very bad foot. What this concept needs are new, purpose-built, specially-designed ships that could, if required, be built assembly-line style, kind of like the vessels of Indonesia's PELNI, or even the R ships for that matter.

Of course, since everybody said that easyjet would never work, some would argue that Stelios can do anything he says he can, conventional wisdom be damned, and personally despite it being blown off by a lot of people I do believe that his concept for easycruises or whatever he would call it could work, but not with a fleet of mismatched secondhand ships... And to do so, he would be violating what may be the single most important feature of all the easy companies besides the color orange.

Cruiseny, that is well spoken.

By the Way: When the Mardi Gras started as single Ship, old with an new, totally different Concept than all others,

all the World was laughing and says, that that WILL NEVER WORK.

Did Carnival work?

Mmm... Roc to Easycruises ?
Not a good idea for me.
Roc could do well if acquired by the Chandris family.
I don't know if, after the sale of Celebrity Cruises to Royal Caribbean, they're still interested to the cruise bussiness, but Chandris/Fantasy Cruises was a very successfull venture.... great cruises at cheap prices.
Another possibility for Roc could be the acquisition by Super Fast Ferries.
In 2001 they announced a joint venture with Costa Cruises to create a premium brand cruise line in the Aegean.
Why not begin with Roc ?
Ok, apart the two newbuildsings, thair fleet isn't premium... but thare are so many interesting and even highly rated cruise ships currently for sale.
Just two examples: SuperStar Aries and Orient Venus.

Well, I almost agree with everything you said except from the above.
Easycar operates a wide range of cars at the moment and easyjet 3 types of airplanes B737-300, B737-700 and A319.
What I 'm trying to say is that the initial concept of easy"companies" to have uniform fleets, use cheap airports only etc etc etc is not valid any more in any way and this is reflected on their prices as well.
These companies make profits in many other ways which I can analyse to you in private cause otherwise my message is gonna be too boring.

MORE RUMOURS

from ELEUTHEROTYPIA ONLINE (Daily Greek Newspaper at www.enet.gr)

The newspaper reports rumours that the financial problems "imposed" onto the two Greek companies by their bankers are done on purpose trying to make the companies weak and easy to be taken over from larger companies (names not given) which need increased presence in the Mediterranean.

I leave the comments for you...

The Chandris group still owns a fair amount of RCI stock, and John Chandris sits on the board of directors.

I think the idea of their being bought out by Attica Enterprises (parent of Superfast) is more likely, since they have certainly shown interest in the cruise business.

Interesting. I knew easyjet was changing to Airbus but I didn't realise that the car division started branching out from A-classes.

Incidentally there is now a web site for easyCruise. Apparently the cabins would be based off the easyDorm concept, which are to be built in Finland (my guess is by the Pikko Works). It would take a lot of work to retrofit these easyDorm style cabins to cruise ships, so my guess is they're looking at newbuildings. Also, they say the venture will start in 2005 at the latest, though of course if the right opportunity were to come by they might not want to pass it up...

ROC has been crying 'victim' for several years now. They're only a victim of their own incompetence.

I agree with Doug, John Chandris doesn't want or need the headaches of ROC.

Tim...you spoke it well about ROC!! I think everyone knew one of their first signs of trouble was whem they refused delivery of one of their new ships for almost a year...then a move that I will never figure out...was when they "suddenley" changed their mind and pulled out of Houston and sent their ship to Greece?? That was odd!! But hey it was ROC!!

What are the Chandris's doing these days. I haven't heard about them since they sold Celebrity to RCCL. Why did they sell the line?
