My wife and I are interested in taking a cruise to Alaska this summer, but we are awash with choices and tearing our hair out. We took our first cruise to the Carribean last year (10th anniversary-renewed vows

) with Princess and loved it! With the expense of getting to Alaska we want to be sure the get the best we can for a buck, but we don't want to be cheap if it's a once in a lifetime thing for us. Any suggestions on which lines are the best, which ports/areas should we see or avoid? Thanks in advance

I like Holland America Line or Princess as they have lovely ships and have the most experience in Alaska. Holland America's ship are a little more intimate except the brand new Oosterdam and Zuiderdam which are their larger ships. Holland America's other ships are all newer but have an "old world" charm to them. I highly recommend a veranda cabin as the scenery on the inside passage route is beautiful. Princess in somes cases offers more veranda cabins. Both of these lines have extensive sea/land options to see more of Alaska as an option either before or after your cruise portion. Crystal Cruises is a very luxurious option, but this line does not offer as many sailings as the others. I do not recommend Carnival as their ships are a little more "down market" for a cruise of a lifetime.

I sailed with RCI on my Alaska Cruise. With this summer's fleet, I would recommend RCI's VISION of the SEAS over RADIANCE or SERENADE of the SEAS. I have sailed twice on the VISION-class so that explains how much I like those ships! I agree with lasuvidaboy, book a veranda cabin!

A friend sailed to Alaska on HAL a few years ago - she said the ship, service, etc were excellent, but what particularly attracted her were the number of unusual excursions. She went deep sea fishing, white water rafting ... not the "usual" cruis excursions at all and thoroughly enjoyed her time.

I sailed on HAL's Volendam to Alaska last August and had a wonderful time. There were so many excursions to choose from, but as I had been there before only booked the White Pass Rail. It was amazing and I would do it again. It did help that we had a bright, warm, sunny day.

Choose a ship that goes to Glacier Bay - and one that leaves from Vancouver. Some ships leave from Seattle and a lot of the time they are out in the ocean, which can be rough. Inside passage cruise is the best.

HAL has many ships in Alaska.

Whichever ship/line you choose, have a wonderful time.
