I have sketched some Cunard ships *QE2 as well as my own designs* and have to come up with names. I have recycled Aquitania and Mauretania etc. but like to try and think of new ones... my two favorite are...

Leatania (Pronounced Lae-a-tania)
Andria (Pronounced An-dr-ea)
Astronia (Pronounced Ast-ronia)

Has anyone else got "ia" names that just SHOULD be on the side of a Cunarder in the future

Chris

Jochen, do you prefer Kassia or Kasatania?

As for Stormia - wouldn't want to have anyone who get's seasick aboard

I like Olympia - I wonder why they never used it I guess too close to OLYMPIC of WSL.

Prior to the merger of the Cunard and White Star (owners of the Titanic) Lines in the 1930's all Cunard Ship's names ended in 'ia' and all White Star Ship's ended in 'ic' at the time of the merger existing 'ia' and 'ic' ships kept their names.
When the new merged company decided to build two new large ships in the 1930's the idea of naming them Queen------ was devised to get away from the 'ia' and 'ic' former practices.
Indeed the 1st Queen Mary was to have been called Queen Victoria but when the Cunard-White Star Chairman approached King George V and asked permission to name their new ship after "England's greatest Queen" He replied I am sure my wife would be greatly honoured and thus The Queen Mary came to be.

Ok, let’s get serious about these “ia” ending names. Now I assume they will have to be of Latin origin, so let’s start off with the old Roman Empire:

Aquitania (Gallia)
Armenia
Asia
Assyria
Bithynia
Britannia
Cappodocia
Cilicia
Dacia
Dalmatia
Galatia
Germania
Italia
Lycaonia
Lycia
Lusitania (Hispania)
Macedonia
Mauretania
Mesopotamia
Moesia
Numidia
Pamphylia
Pannonia
Pisidia
Rhaetia
Sardinia
Sicilia (Italia)
Syria
Thracia

Then you have Roman names such as:

Aemilia
Camilia
Claudia
Cornelia
Fabia
Galeria
Horatia
Lemonia
Maecia
Menenia
Papiria
Pollia
Publilia
Pupinia
Romilia
Scaptia
Sergia
Voturia

Of course during European history there have been and still are many names with “ia” endings, such as:

Asturia
Bohemia
Cumbria
Moravia
Pomerania
Umbria

and many, many more... Take your pick I guess.

**************************************************

Cheers

If this thread is not brought to a merciful end, we shall be considering names like:

Myopia
Paranoia

And shall introduce a virtually limitless biological series starting, I suggest with:

Drosophilia

Well said!

None of the "-ia" names used by Cunard in the past were just made up names. They were historical names of geographical regions or people, unlike many of the suggestions in this thread which border on the ridiculous, to put it mildly. Fortunately saner heads are minding the store at Cunard, even if it is owned by Carnival Corporation.

Well, fellas if Cunard branched out as a container line, say the size of Maersk-Sealand or MSC, they probably would.

Cheers

PS. Cambodge you would have to be blind to sail on Myopia.

Historical people? Sorry, but I stand by my comments. BTW, I said "some".

No not historical - yet.. oh well. I never intended this to be for names that will actually be used - just a play on the "ia" to try and make a nice new name that would suit a beautiful ocean going vessel.

just because of his Technical difficulties of not being correct on definite Cunard ships and not being historical and correct, dose not mean you must go ahead and start accusing ! It may be that these names are that of ppl in ones life! So before you pass judgement Brian_O you must firstly ask reasons of the names!

Cheers
