It's hard to say for certain since they are a private company. I would guess they are doing ok, although probably not great. I've been getting a lot of direct mail advertising from them, and also the fact they are looking to charter the third ship for another year suggests they could be doing better. I would guess if the first two ships were selling out at high per diems then they would really want the third to increase capacity. I don't think they are quite at that stage yet which is why the charter is probably a better option for them.

I think they have a solid business plan and from what I read a pretty good product, so I do hope they stick around. It's really nice to have an option that is not part of the "big three" cruise companies.

I've never been a fan of the R-Class ships, but I've also never sailed one. If I do, for certain it will be on Oceania.

koch - Oceania is doing very well...they are beyond what their forcasts were for the first few years of operation. The reasoning for the charter of the 3rd vessel was to basically lay claim to that vessel for when they do need it, and to give them the option to utilize it during over capacity seasons....

If you remember a few months ago, there was rumour about their financial position because of one of the travel insurance companies dropping them from their coverage list...Frank DelRio immediately responded to this, and as such the insurance company withdrew their statement.

They should be around for a long time...they are building gradually and not adding full time capacity when the market doesn't exist yet.

Don't be surprised if you see the possibility of Silversea and Oceania merging somewhere down the road....rumour of course..

I would hope this doesn't happen. Two totally different products for two completely different markets. I don't see a good fit. Silversea and Seabourn would make a far better match.

No way Silversea would join either Oceania or Seabourn.
Silversea belongs to the Vlasov Group from Monaco which is one of the leading shipping companies in the world. they really do not need to join any other company.
If Silversea would ever need to merge with another company, then this would most probably be Radisson Seven Seas Cruises. Their vessels are also owned and managed by Vlasov.

Oceania is doing well so far. I have heared lots of very good comments about their cruises and know they currently offer the best product with the former R-class vessels.
TMR has currently chartered their third ship, the NAUTICA, for French passengers.

I agree, Patrick. Silversea has no need to merge with anyone. However, I would love to see V.Ships get back into the cruise business more directly. Ever since selling Sitmar to Princess in 1988 the Vlosov group has only managed ships- but never been wholly responsible for a cruise line.

I would love for V.ships to join forces with MSC creating a joint venture in the cruise industry. Together these two giants of the shipping world could have the skills and resources to take on the other large cruise companies. They would have a strong base in Europe (MSC Cruises) and a good reputation with in the American luxury market (Silversea and Radisson).

They could easily launch a new brand to go head to head with RCI, Princess, HAL, and NCL. And it would be wonderful to see the service we once loved with Sitmar back in this market.

I know- its just a dream, but how exciting would that be.

Until then, I still cheer for underdog cruise lines like Oceania. I hope they contiue to grow and succeed.

I agree that Oceania and Silversea operate on two totally different markets. Oceania's market is premium cruises whereas Silversea operates on the ultra luxury market. Their ships (380 passengers maxi for Silversea, more than double for Oceania), as well as clientele are very different.
It is true that Oceania hired quite a few employees from Silversea. Nonetheless, those two companies are very different. One must remember that Oceania was created by ex-Renaissance executives and considering how Renaissance ended up, one might wonder about Oceania's viability.
For the record, and contrary to what was mentioned previously in this forum, Silversea does not belong to the Vlasov group. The company is owned privately by the Lefebvre family, which used to own Sitmar cruises (90% of the shares) together with Vlasov. When Boris Vlasov died in 1988, Sitmar cruises was sold to Princess Cruises. The Lefebvre family then created Silversea in 1994. These days, Vlasov (V-Ships) is a totally separate entity and only acts as the manning agent for marine and technical operations.

along the same lines, it would be interesting to know the path that MSC plan to take. they have gone form nothing 20 years ago to one of the big players in the container ship market, number 2 i think. they own and operate well over two hundred container ships and now seem to be getting serious about the cruise industry.
MSC, a privatly owned company has acheived all of this without big take overs or mergers, quite impressive.

V. Ships' connection to Silversea really is pretty remote. The only major cruise ships V. Ships Leisure manages are Club Med 2, Island Escape, Minerva II, Saga Pearl, and World Discoverer. Plus the ferry Cesme. Any one of these ships probably has more in common with Sitmar than Silversea would.

I could not agree more. Silversea and V-Ships have very little in common and it is for the best. V-ships, like Appollo Shipchandlers (other management and crewing agency) are not particularly known in the industry for being very crew friendly. Silversea is one of the last substantial cruise lines that does not belong to a mega cruise company like Carnival. Hope they will remain independant for a long time.

Hi there,

I really thought, V-Ships would own Silversea... well, thanks for putting the clearance into that.

LinerBuff....good point on the Renaissance bankruptcy....there's more too that story as too why Ren failed...
Renaissance built their reputation on the merits of their original fleet of small ships..and did not deal through travel agents. They booked their ships wholly on direct mail to affluent people and on past cruisers.
When they started to build the R series ships, they added too much capacity too fast....they didn't change their marketing program to incorporate the travel agent into selling their cruises...until it was too late. By the time they finally did authorize travel agents to book their line, most chose not too because they were shunned in the past. Trying to book 7 new bigger ships @ 600 passengers each was too much too handle in just direct mail...
So what happens when you have huge amounts of new debt accruing and not enough sufficient bookings to cover costs? You go belly up.
I really don't think this will happen to Oceania. The CEO (who was a former Ren Cruise CEO) was not part of Ren for almost a year prior too their demise... He's running things the right way, has good TA support, and a good marketing plan.

From the V.Ships' website:

____________
By utilising the experience and expertise of company shareholder Vlasov, owners of the pioneering Sitmar Cruises until its sale to P&O in 1988, V.Ships identified the high growth potential of the cruise industry at an early stage in its development.

V.Ships Leisure was established to provide services to those cruise lines, including new market entrants, wishing to outsource various management activities.

V.Ships Leisure now employs over 80 shore-based staff, and 5,000 crew, of which 20% are deck & engine crew, and 80% are hotel staff. With over 35 passenger vessels under management, V.Ships Leisure is the only ship management company providing integrated deck & engine and hotel management.

_________________

Here's my question. If the Vlosov family owned Sitmar until its sail in 1988, how does the Lefebvre family fit in? Did Vlosov really only own 10% as Liner Buff says?

BTW, V.ships also manages new ship construction (below is a list of ships they've built). Included in the list are Radisson Seven Seas' ships, and Silversea's:

• Fair Sky
• Arcadia
• Crown Princess
• Regal Princess
• Silver Cloud
• Silver Wind
• Minerva
• Seven Seas Navigator
• Seven Seas Mariner
• Seven Seas Voyage

Hi Fairsky,

It is true that when Silversea started up, the association with V-Ships was a lot closer than it is nowadays.
V-Ships supervised the building of the two original ships (Silver Cloud and Silver Wind) and at the beginning they even ran the two ships on Silversea's behalf quite simply because Silversea at that time did not have the structure to do it themselves. Until the late 90's, V-Ships was in charge of the marine, technical as well as hotel operations. As Silversea grew stronger, they decided to run everything in-house. As far as I know, V-ships only then intervened as a technical consultant.
Then, after 9/11, Silversea like other cruise lines suffered from the downturn in the cruise industry and decided to bring V-Ships back, but only for marine and technical operations. Hotel operations remained in-house. These days V-Ships acts as Silversea's technical superintendant and as manning agent for deck and engine personnel. The relationship between Silversea and V-Ships still exists (you also have to remember that quite a few of Silversea's senior officers are former Sitmar officers) but it is far from being as strong as it once was.
As far as the percentage of Sitmar's shares owned by the Lefebvre family is concerned, I found this info recently in a document released by Silversea on the occasion of their 10th anniversary. Apparently by 1988 the Lefebvre family had bought most of Vlasov's shares.
