We're booked on the Carnival Glory for next Saturday. This cruise leaves out of Port Canaveral.

It appears that Hurricane Frances may be coming up the Florida coast from the southeast at approximately the same time as the Glory.

We've been on cruises in multiple hurricanes, and the Glory shouldn't have any problems while at sea. The issue is about docking.

What generally happens when a ship cannot get into its scheduled port? Do they (a) divert to another port; (b) wait the storm out or (c) cancel the cruise? If they wait the storm out, I presume that itinerary would be changed.

Are certificates or vouchers issued in these circumstances?

Based on any past experiences, how early would Carnival make this decision?

Since we live under 2 hours away, our issue is not getting to the port. Of course, this same storm puts our home in harm's way. But, there's nothing we can do about that. So, we will still go on the cruise.

As you know, the itineraries are typically changed to avoid any storm activity. I understand your concern about getting back into home port. A few years ago the TROPICALE had to wait an extra day or so before returning home to Tampa because of a storm in that area. This is a very rare occurence. I remember in 1999 when they also had to relocate the FANTASY from Port Canaveral to Port Everglades because of a hurricane; in that instance, they bussed all passengers between the ports--a big inconvenience for everyone to be sure, but again, that was an exceptional case. Keep in touch with your agent or Carnival for up-to-date info., but other than that all you can really do is make the best of your cruise and enjoy it all that you can!
Good luck and good sailing!!

I am watching as I leave on the Fantasy Thursday for a three night quickie to Nassau. At this point I do not believe that we will be docking anywhere if the storm stay on the current track. Just cruise around the Atlantic for three days. My concern is some computer models have this storm making landfall around central Florida. I know that it is still about five days away and many things can change and I hope that they do. I will be arriving in Florida early and will keep in contact with Carnival if need be.

Have a great time on the Glory.

Gordon

I hope you both have a wonderful time despite Frances. Atlcruiser you guessed right with a cruise to nowhere, but fondaenergy from Joe's post, you are only going to get 4 nights Keep safe all.

There have been a lot of changes to ship schedules due to the hurricane. Carnival, Holland America, NCL, Princess, Celebrity, Disney, and Royal Caribbean have all issued updates regarding ship
changes and office closings. Some lines have been a bit more generous with the compensation packages than others. If you are interested, a complete list of the schedule changes for all cruise
lines can be found here:

You can also check out the individual website for the various cruise lines for the most updated information.

At least in my case, Carnival has been extremely generous. We did decide to take the offer of the 4-day cruise. We get $100 per person onboard credit, half our cruise fare back and a voucher for 50 percent off another cruise. This was too good to pass up.

We anticipate that it will be a very rough cruise. But, we think this will not be as rough as our transatlantic cruise on Vision of the Seas. I do hope that we miss hurricane Ivan. Ivan is supposed to be around PR around Thursday.

The media coverage down here has been massive. There is a weather update almost every 15 minutes. It will be nice to be away from it all on a cruise.

It appears that the Glory will still be sailing tomorrow. It's hard to say if we will be impacted by Ivan, which should be around the Bahamas by week's end.

We should be able to get to Port Canaveral tomorrow (Tuesday).

So far, we've had no damage to our home. However, we have been without power multiple times. It's still very windy and wet (day #3).

Thankful you've not had any damage. Go and have a great cruise wherever you may end up; even 4 days at sea would suit me fine but obviously others aboard may not agree, having maybe specifically booked for the previously scheduled ports of call.

chrisrotlmacin a week at sea would keep you busy in your job Enjoy and let us now where you do end up eventually, and who left their luggage back home. [I have giggled over that with many friends over the last few days, all think it's hilarious]. Norwegian Dawn is a lovely ship; again I wouldn't care if there were no ports of call. In fact they can be an an intrusion unless full of other interesting ships/ferries/yachts etc to pore over.

Here is my latest update:

Carnival refers hurricane issues to their WEB site. This site is not always kept current.

I had looked at 3 p.m. and there was no change. At 5:30 p.m., I was called by their Call Center. The person I spoke with really was not properly informed. So, I checked the WEB site and talked to another Carnival representative.

Port Canaveral has sustained enough damage that ships cannot embark or debark there. The Carnival Glory is now leaving from Miami.

What Carnival is going to do is bus people from the Port or the Orlando airport.

When I was called, the person did not even mention the option of parking at the port. She was totally unfamiliar with the Orlando Airport or any of the Carnival procedures in a situation like this. I was told my only option was to go to the airport and, essentially, to figure it out for myself.

We are o.k. with driving to the Port and leaving our car there. We were not o.k. with going to the airport and not having specific instructions about what to do other than going to baggage claim, especially when we're not flying there.

I find it hard to believe that this information could not have been posted earlier, when we're supposed to be referring to their WEB site.
