I just learned that my cruise to Grand Caymans was replaced by a trip to Costa Maya. I immediately contacted Carnival and canceled. The other port is cozumel. I understand they have no control of the weather but why two ports in the same country. And additionally, why would I want to go somewhere the natives obviously don't want to be ie: thousands of illegal mexican immigrants in the states?

It is your prerogative to cancel the cruise if you don’t like the change of itinerary.

Although I have little experience of Mexico, I have been to many ‘second world’ countries in the world, which have low standards of living and even mass poverty. However this does not mean that they do not have anything to offer as a tourist destination.
I assume that millions of American’s do enjoy the Mexican ports of call?

One would hope that visiting cruise lines would bring some prosperity for the locals, although I understand that this is not necessarily the case?

I have always found the Mexican tour guides to be the most professional, friendliest, and hardest working of all the nationalities in the Carribean. Granted, I'm not exactly a world traveller but do take a few cruises per year, and always look forward to the Mexican excursions the most. Just one small data point from one small-time cruiser.

All opinions are equal here, apart from mine which is obviously more valid!

I find your comments very ignorant.

Firstly it is a huge generalisation, as the Mexican population in the US is just a small fraction of the whole global Mexican population. You can't say that natives don't want to live there based on the fact that a small percentage of them have chosen to live elsewhere. I am British, and there are many British people that have moved abroad. Does that mean the UK is a bad place? Does that mean that people will assume that it is a bad place because some have moved away?

Secondly, I suspect that many who have left Mexico would love to return but cannot due to financial reasons.

I urge you to be more diplomatic in future postings.

I agree that most Mexicans would return to Mexico if the economic situation was better there. Mexico is NOT a poor country as it has vast oil reserves, rich natural resources, incredible scenery and a young hard working work force. The problems there go very deep with a long history of a very corrupt government. They really deserve better as the people there are some of the most gracious I have ever encountered and we will countinue to spend our Thanksgiving holiday there at our beach home in beautiful Puerto Vallarta as we have since I was a child. Of course the illegal immigration situation has really gotten out of control here in California, but these people are desperate and cannot survive in their homeland. It is a very sad situation.

I remember that many people in this one very small village was sick of the corrupt government so they elected a dog as the towns mayor, I guess the old mayor was taking the towns tax money for himself and was involve in shady deals...
