Lindie,

Glad you have enjoyed the Ships. Maybe its now time for a "Readers Review" Page for Thomson Cruises; suggest you ask this question via the links to the left under RR on your screen.

I have asked on the site also as many SunCruises/MyTravel fans may well be looking for some info from the inside track

The Merchant.

Yes I have a question:
how much of original interiors of the EMERALD from her days as SANTA PAULA(?) remains in the ship?

Is it worth a try for a ship lover who expects "Old World Atmosphere"

Are there any original fitted cabins?

Many thanks for your advice!

Lindie11, Thompson are just one of many cruise lines in the world. Although popular with Brits they are not one of the worlds major cruise lines.

You must remember that this is an international web site, so many of the cruisetalker do not live in Britain and they are very UNLIKELY to ever take a Thompson cruise.

The biggest global cruise lines are Carnival, Royal Caribbean and the Norwegian cruise line - of course there are many others. Thomoson operate (charter) second hand ships, and only have a small fleet of four ships in 2005. However the big cruise lines actually design there own ships and build them. Royal Caribbean, for example, have around fourteen ships, although I keep losing count.

Perhaps most importantly Thomson are a ‘budget’ cruise line. Thomson (like Airtours) are very popular with British first-timers, but they often progress up the ladder to more upmarket (expensive) lines like P&O or Cunard.

It’s a bit like me saying that I love my Ford Fiesta. However, some of the Cruistalkers will be looking to purchase a BMW or Rolls Royce!

I’m sure any cruisetalkers that want Thompson advice they will contact you. However the Thompson web site or brochure is also any easy way to check itineraries etc.

Lindie seems a bit fanatical about Thomson to me - they're a good enough cheap cruise line. On Emerald, the outside luxury staterooms with bath have NOT changed since she was Santa Whatever she was and are FANTASTIC. The bar in Monte Carlo Court and the Chanterelle Dining Room are the only original rooms to have survived.

Find this surprising, if not disappointing: WHY do ships like the "Island Escape" and other similar Lines get web space, after all that is 'Budget', AND a glorified converted Car Ferry, is it not?

You are spot on about folks moving across wallet barriers BUT as I said in an earlier email, PAX need somewhere to 'hang their hats' after the demise of SunCruises/Airtours/MyTravel's and the Ships AND PEOPLE who will have to move on.

Go on Chap, we Brits and Americans have to stand shoulder to shoulder - set up the site for Thomson Reviews - what have you or we to loose?

Cheers and see you in two weeks when we get back from The Seawing on Her penultimate run before going back to dock at Pireaus and ROC Lines.

The Merchant.

Please don't think that I'm anti-Thomson or anti-budget cruise at all. Anyone can post a 'Readers Review' in cruisetalk, be them a Thomson, Airtours or Silver Seas, passenger.

Strangely enough he have loads of Airtours reviews, but not so many Thomson. Maybe Joe (the boss) might set up a seperate 'Thomson' heading?

Anyone can talk about Thomson here, if they wish, although we can't make them! If you want to set up an 'exclusive' Thomson chat forum, why not set-up a Yahoo 'group'. I think that is free? They might be one already, for all I know?

There are probably some british cruise-chat web sites out there which may have more Thomson fans?

I'm not aware that we have so many Thomson fans amoungst the Cruisetalkers here, but I could be wrong? So you are unlikely to get too many replies to your offer to discuss Thomson.

As I've already said were are a very international web site, so the major international cruise lines are often discussed more.

I can confirm that Joe is setting up specific 'Thomson' headings in both the 'Ship Reviews' and 'Readers Reviews'.

I think that's a 'NO'!

The whole idea of Cruisetalk is to express opinions and ask questions, rather than beg for questions that you would like to answer.

If someone has a Thomson question they will post it and you can reply is you wish. We only probably get a question about Thomson maybe once or twice a year, so you could have a long wait.

I think that you need to broaden your horizons, there are many other cruise lines to discuss.

SUPERB Chaps & Chappesses!! I am responding from Corfu and the old Tub (Seawing)as referrred to by some is bursting at the seams, with a full house next week for her last tour - boy is that gonna be emotional.

People are scrambling for another Line to follow after Sun Cruises, and majority opinion is what a waste of people talent and Brandname!

Look forward to those girst reviews but for up to date info on MV Seawing, plse drop me a note. We saw the new Holland Line Vessel at Venice yesterday - WOW and the PAX are very impresed during her shakedowThe Merchant PHagan@dsl.pipex.com

I don't know Thomsom, they seem to me a mass market british touroperatur, like every country has, it seems. Or is it part of even a bigger conglomerate (i am always confused between MyTravel and Thomsom)

From what I have seen the former Nieuw Amsterdam and Noordam, looked better in their former livery, with that deep blue. totally white they don't look at their best. Perhaps the white is too white...

Are their interiors much changed ? All though I 've seen only Noordam, and that ship passing by, I have had always a soft spot for them, they seemed very beautiful ships to me, modern, angular, strong, but not ugly, a bit no-nonsense, but this is all just emotions of course.

Should it be worth cruising on them ? But from what i have seen on the site, the prices for mas market/budget, seem rather steep to me ?

?

ok mec i'll pm you with my details

the interiors have changed and have been designed by the famous linda barkerbut it is quite classical still with modern features too. i would say that it is really worth cruising on any of their ships but i would recomend the spirit. the prices are worth it and if you book by a certain date yopu can have a cabin upgrade an all inclsive upgrade and money off, i think the date hasn't expired yet.

no i dont work for thomson but i know many people from my previous cruises with them who do and i keep in contact with them. thats why i can answer most of your questions.

any more questions?

If I ever booked a Thomson holiday it would be purely to go on the ship and nothing else. I note that they have just this week swapped Celebration & Spirit around. Now if I had booked one or the other, and then was told it had changed, I might be a little bit annoyed. They seem to be just telling people that it makes no difference as the ships are 'identical'. I don't know if they are giving people the option to stay on the ship they booked, on the different itinerary, or just telling them you're doing the same trip, but it's a different ship. Maybe Lindie11 knows?
