During the delivery ceremony of Arcadia at Fincantieri's Venice-Marghera shipyard on Sunday (March 20th), P&O Cruises Managing Director, David Dingle, had this to say:

..."to maintain leadership in the UK market, we (P&O Cruises) need more ships and I look forward to Fincantieri building more ships for us."

When will this happen and what designs can we expect?

I would expect more of the same ... the Vista Class. Carnival has already exploited this design over five brands so why not keep the momentum going?

Maybe Queen Victoria will be transferred to P&O becoming their Canberra 2.

It would be nice to have a bit more variety, than the endless (seeming) Vista class and allied designs...

I think I heard ADONIA is returning to the
Princess fleet. Is that not true? That would
mean one fewer, not more. I like the look
of the new ARCADIA. I like the vista-class
vessels, unlike many here.

Carnival Corp . seems to be going the way of commercial aviation. Building one model for several different lines but with slightly different interior configurations, decor and exterior livery. A bit like comparing a British Airways Boeing 777 with a United Airlines 777. Same exterior, just a little different interior and livery.

Maybe Mr. Dingle was referring to one of the two CARIBBEAN-class ships ordered awhile ago? I really hope Meyer Werft will build a ship (a ORIANA/AURORA hybrid?) for P&O...

Me too! The Vista-class ships are much better looking than Carnival/Costa's version. I am afraid to say, it might be better looking than AIDA's Sphinx-project...

I feel just the opposite. I think the Spirit Class looks better. I like the way the balconies jet in and out in sections and I feel it gives the ship a sleeker appearance. I also like the forecastle better being sloped steel rather than tiered decks. To me it give the ship a more powerful look. I don't think either the Spirit or Vista Class will win any beauty pageants (both are floating apartment blocks), but given the choice I'll take the appearance of Spirit.

I've thought the same thing ever since the Spirit/Vista Class was developed. It's getting to the point where a small handful of shipyards are producing essentially the same basic ship for several different brands. Now it seems cruise lines and shipyards are becoming even more proprietary. Carnival Corp with Fincantieri and Royal Caribbean with Aker. Of course there are exceptions but generally speaking. In the long term I don't see how it will benefit the consumer as individual brands as we know them become more and more blurred.

I like as well Vista-Spirit class. They are so far from being the ugliest newbuilds. Just look at the Destiny or the Grand classes, for examples, they are so hideous ! Of course you have to compare those classes with contemporary ships, not with old ocean liners (of course thoses ones looked much better).

Anyway, I think that the most beautiful ships built these last 10 years are Oriana & Aurora.

I'm not quite sure whether CGT would agree or disagree with this, but for me the analogy goes on: A little different interior and livery, and a world of difference in service. The last bit will keep me choosing one over the other.

I agree Globaliser - it's in many cases the software that makes the difference - and even many years ago when classes of ships were built ( the Cunard Saxonia sisters, the White Star Big Four, the Straths, Orcades and her sisters) each ship was different and each was preferred by different people for different reasons. I would be far happier if cruiselines differentiated their onboard product rather than worrying about their all having the same ship designs. And actually, when you think about it, I am sure that one of the reasons for Carnival's enormous success (the line, not Carnival corp) is that they came up with a simple and absolutely single-minded brand proposition - FUN....

The service on HAL, Carnival, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Costa, NCL, and even Cunard and Celebrity is really not that different. Certainly not "a world apart". There are subtle differences but on the big ships it's basically an International crew catering to 2000+ passengers. To really obtain a world of difference in service, you must step up to the smaller luxury lines that really know how to cater to the individual. It's the difference between a Hilton/Marriott and a Ritz Carlton.

Today we have Celebrity staff working on Royal Caribbean. Costa staff on Carnival. Princess staff on Cunard. Etc. etc. The staff, just like the new ships, are essentially interchangeable.

I 've been thinking about the "good old days", for example the P&O and Orient fleets from 1930 to 1959, and wondering if exterior designs really differed more than what we see now. Pre-war - three funnels, two funnels, one funnel ... ? Post-war, how readily could we distinguish Arcadia from Iberia, Himalaya and Chusan, or Orcades from Oronsay and Orsova? It seems to me that today's successful companies do what they've always done - find a good design and adapt it as long as it works. There is as much fascination in variations as in bold new designs.

Before being switched to the Princess brand, one of the recent Grand-class newbuilds had been scheduled to go to P&O. (I'm not sure which ship, one from Fincantieri- either Caribbean or the upcoming Crown).

Perhaps there is still a Grand-class in P&O's future? I, of course, do not support this idea, but it may happen. Can someone do a quick photoshop of a Grand with P&O funnel?

Are you sure about that? I can't imagine a ship as big as that fitting in with P&O's fleet at present.

CROWN PRINCESS, currently being built in Italy was originally slated for P&O. Rest assured P&O will receive one of the Grand-Class orders, and she might even have an interesting name!

Usually ships changed from one cruise line to the other after some years being in service, now it seems as if it is becoming fashion that they change even before they are built.

Although P&O may be losing ADONIA, they are
gaining another with the transfer of ROYAL
PRINCESS to P&O from Princess.
