Wifey hates wondering if I am on my way to the dining room or meeting her in the cabin. Our friends decide to go to a later show but don't know where one of us is.

Do walkie-talkies work onboard and are they permmitted or is there some other was of communicating on board?

There might be some difficulties as ships are made of steel. May I suggest an alternative:

(blue and orange also available)

seriously: On big ships it is not so easy to meet or keep a group together. The easierst thing to do is to use the phones, which are nearly everywhere.

Well if you and your wife really want to look like thick hicks, walkie talkies are ideal

..and you call Malcolm tactless?

Yes akastan. these things do work on ships, indeed some lines even rent them out, but they are more irritating than the guy who keeps answering his mobile phone in a restaurant! Please don't use them for the sanity of other passengers.

"Hi Honey, where are you.. Oh I can see you now, walking through the door, can you see me - mind the table.." .. annoying unecessary chat for everyone to hear. There are plenty of phones about ship and pens & paper to leave a msg

I admit to having both a US pair and European pair, and usually take them on holiday, intended for use when ashore if we go our separate ways. However, they can only have ever been used once or twice. I would never dream of using them aboard any ship.

I have to admit, we've used them onboard before...but only during the daytime when everyone is doing their separate things...they do come in handy when you are on your lounge chair and just lotioned up and realized you forgot something in the cabin...you know, don't wanna lose the deck chair you had to fight to get...

I agree with Pam, they come in extremely handy when in port...we use them all the time when in port and it saves a lot of searching when trying to get the group together.

An added bonus is to answer other people's chatter as if you were the person they were looking for....c'mon, you know that's funny....whether you want to admit it or not...

...not to forget: they are a nice toy. (also for children ) But I am not so sure, whether they make your life much easier. And, as mentioned, quite a lot of people with start to really hate you - not only fellow passengers, but maybe also those people you send back to your cabin etc.

Yes Ernst, the children do 'play' with them, with their friends. But then they are in the garden or park, away from everyone Or once I caught them chatting to friend up the road late at night!

Hi Akastan...we've used our walkie-talkies for the last 3-4 cruises. My husband always likes to know what deck I'm on when I'm taking interior/exterior shots of the ship and when I go ashore. The signal carries very well on board, we've not run across any problems.

I thought that walkie-talkies were illegal (on land, at least)

Johan it depends on the type. "PMR446" is the EU standard approved for use in the UK & the EU with no license required. They only have a max range of 3 miles [in theory, less in practice]. These are not legal in the US, neither are the US approved FRS/GMRS radios legal within Europe.

Pam,

you being an expert, or having an expert in the family, might know wheter the CB is still used? (working at 27 MHz it might not be that nice on a ship compared to these 400 MHz things, of course)

Greetings

Ernst

Not a good idea to get them on baord . Same types even interfear with ship comunicaton . I remember on Regal Empress we had problems with our staff radios. On large ships are useless on board. Unless you use the same f req. band with the crew that usually have signal amplifiers all over the ship.
