I'm going on a Fred Olsen cruise on the Braemar this summer. The men in our party will be wearing tux's on formal nights. Will I get away with wearing my ballgown, or is this going to be too formal? It's not too over the top...any advice?

I would say it is over the Fred Olsen top.

Ball gowns are over the top on any cruise line, except maybe Crystal. Haven't seen one in years because they are too hard to pack.

I think the only time I did see one was on a young lady who had driven to the port in Fort Lauderdale and she carried it on in a garment bag.....this was years ago.

But, hey, if you want to wear it wear it.

As long as it comes with a tiara, you will be fine.

Oh well, that's that then...We had to sell the tiara to pay for the cruise tickets, so I suppose the ballgown will have to stay at home....sigh!

It was a good question though. When QM2 was being built, Cunard had adverts with beautiful models dressed in designer ballgowns dreaming about a voyage. The gowns were quite grand but I thought a bit over the top. I have never been aboard a Fred Olsen ship but I would guess you would dress as you would to dine in a fine restaurant or an evening on the town. On QE2/QM2 you can see men in kilts and all sorts of evening wear-some quite elegant but I have never seen a ballgown onboard. Have a fantastic cruise and tell us about it when you return!

OK. I think I feel a shopping trip for some more suitable dresses coming on, so the news isn't all bad!

Ballgowns are less over the top on a British ship.

Many American's idea of formal is to turn their baseball caps around!

(Nice choice of ship)

Fred Olsen is as British as Crystal is U.S. - and I am not sure where it is less over the top....of course most "U.S." ships are not really formal, but this is also true for a lot of "British" ships.
Fred Olsen is not a "fun ship" cruise line, but miles from being formal.

Don't forget about the 'dressy' English w/their Wellies and a nice tweed skirt.

The onboard Olsen experince is 100% British. In general UK ships are more formal than American ships. Some women DO wear ballgowns for the Captains cocktail night.

There are 'ballgowns' and there are ballgowns!

I'd think wearing a 'ballgown' would require an escort in white tie and tails (and don't let him forget the gloves) or full Highland regalia!

For sure it would be an attention getter.
To be honest , 'a tad over the top'.
