hi all. are we like to hate Carnival? it seems that many of us in cruise talk are not "fans" of Carnival . we use to blame her in many negative things that happens in the industry we call her ships "milk cartons" and Joe Farcus' job is not so admirable here.... well to me its legitimic cause all the things in the world are subjected to taste.
but why , so many of us feels that way about Carnival while thounsends of passangers enjoy Carnival services? is their taste isnt so fine or we act in elitistic way when we dislike Carnival? is Carnival cruise product is so bad? is Carnival being juded too seriously cause she is a giant tycoon that keeps buying all those traditional loved brands? Carnival in terms of facts is one of the most (if not the most) popular and succesfull cruise line in the world . and it seems that lots of passengers see Carnival as suitable for their next vacations
any suggestions?

Carnival can be compared to McDonald's and Walmart--they are big, powerful, and very successful in the markets they serve. Their product appeals to the lowest common denominator in many cases, which alienates other people.

There is a bit of snobbism in bashing Carnival, but frankly their product has improved greatly in recent years. I suppose there is a great element of fear and mistrust of such a large company which is taking over a large portion of the cruise industry. This leads to opposition in many quarters.

I have only been on one Carnival cruise about 5 years ago and it was just ok. The food was not very good but the ship very clean inside and out, the staff very helpful and our group made their own fun. I understand their food has greatly improved in the last few years and that they are fitting their newbuilds w/cabins that do not look like a casino hotel room in Reno, Nevada. I would not call their ships 'milk cartons' that award IMO should go to MSC for their 'boxes that float' fleet. Carnival Corps. success has enabled Cunard to have a future as well as develope newbuilds for their other varied divisions. Carnival is truly the GM of the cruise business-except their stock is actually worth something!

Rooting for Carnival is like rooting for Microsoft, only Carnival is better at what they do than Microsoft is at what they do.

lasuvidaboy, what ship were you on? I was on the Triumph back in '99 and actually, quite enjoyed the experience other than a few isolated issues. I thought the food was quite good on that cruise, so long as you ate in the dining room consistently. The pizza counter was, well, I could have done the same thing with DiGiorno. Whereas on Princess, the pizza is excellent.

I have cruised Carnival a long time before on a last minute Mexican Riviera in 1991.

Even though the service and food were not that bad and I could bear Mr Farcus's painful interiors.

The only problem I had with my fellow passengers, who were simply too many badly behaving narrow minded Americans.

Carnival is a product which forces you to have "fun" immediately once you board. For me it was just too loud and vulgar at times.

However halfway down the cruise I ran into a group of people who felt just a depressed at first and we ended up having a good time together.
Among them there was a very nice black couple. Some fellow passengers asked me why I did hang out with black people...............

Microsoft have a more complete monopoly than Carnival. How many of us are using 'Explorer' and 'Windows' to view this thread?

At least we have RCI and NCL in competition with Carnival. Microsoft only have Apple.

Surreal Though of the day: You could be sitting onboard a Carnival ship at this moment using 'Explorer' to view this thread!

Malcom: many people use Macs, and their number is increasing. This is the dent in, but not a threat to, Microsoft's, not-quite, monopoly.

I might add, that I am not among them, but I have used a friends Mac at his home on one occasion, and am impressed by the technical sophistication and ease of operation of the Mac.

But back to Carnival. Yes Macdonalds of the Sea, undoubtedly. But how many "billions sold?" (I know, the slogan is no longer used)

The institution of Carnival is an essential underpinning of the Cruise Industry as a whole, in my opinion. Some stay happily with Carnival, others move more upscale. Fine, its a big ocean!

We all benefit.

And from next year you'll be seeing the first Macs (running OS X) using Intel chips. What can you compare that to?

BTW, I use a Mac most of the time.

I don't hate Carnival, i don't like there product.

Carnival Co. Dith some great things look how they handle Holland America Line i belive they dith an great job.

And above all Cunard i believe they safe Cunard, and what we might think over there dominate the trate whene the public don't like it they stay away.

Whene Carnival began to grow they dith it with the market in view. First HAL, Costa, Seaborn, Cunard, P&O/Princess so there product cover almost the entire market. Frome the party cruise line Carnival to the exclusiv cruises with Seaborn. Within the premium HAL, the European experiance Costa, Brittich cruising with P&O , transatlantic with Cunard, middle class Princess. German clubcruise market Aida, Sailing cruises with Windstar.

Carnival could growing whene they take an interrest in expedition cruising, budget cruising, river cruising.

The only negativ about the whole company is that they are very big and the danger is that whene the company directors made misstakes the whole thing cane collaps and take other healty subsidery's in the fall.

Greetings Ben.

Malcolm - that's why I use Netscape for web browsing...in all honesty, Exlporer would alway crash on me, and since I switched to Netscape, no problems at all...in fact, it actually runs faster than Explorer...

I've cruised Carnival 3 times out of my 30 plus cruises...and of those 3, only 1 time I would consider a great cruise....that was on the Spirit... I'm going on the Glory in December with a group of family and hope to have a good time, but in seeing what the lobby looks like from Cruise Travel a few months ago, the whole kalidescope theme makes me sick already.

I think they went overboard in the Fantasy class with the glitz and loud colors, the Celebration class used to look like that too....I've toured the Destiny and the overuse of "Bronze" paneling made me ill.... the Spirit class is a complete change and much more elegant.....

Firefox or Opera are far better than the others. I use Opera in the main as I have used it as long as I can remember. I only ever use IE for those pesky people who write webpages that don't work in anything else and I really want to see what it says. Mostly though I don't bother with them [those that are IE specific]. I do find that increasingly those sites which are plastered in the Google ads, have them covering text and menus which is irritating.

Instead of grouping blacks and americans, why don't you forget the information you hear on whatever tabloid tv news channels you've been watching and make your judgements on a case by case basis and see why tourists who come to america always end up saying why is the news in their area always reporting false bull crap.

Carnival is indeed good at what it does. It's not as tacky and low brow as it's made out to be in some respects, but it can be in others. The dining and service are somewhat respectable, but the entertainment and activities are a mixed bag, as will be your fellow passengers. Then again, I haven't sailed with Carnival for nearly 5 years- so things may have changed.

I have only been on 12 cruises but consider myself fairly knowledgable on the subject. I have been on Premier, Regal Empress, the Fantasy and the other 9 on RCI. RCI is by far my favorite. I like to use the analogy that Royal Caribbean is like the Hilton and Carnival is like the Days Inn. The food is fine in either case but I prefer the service, the decor, the overall design and layout of the ships, the pool decks and the fellow passengers on RCI. Not as many NASCAR fans and tattoos.

The purple on the Fantasy was hideous, the pools like swimming in a well, the cabin steward never to be found and I do not care for the auto tipping. I like RCI traditional policy of cash for service well done at the end of the cruise.

Like someone else said. Being the most popular does not mean the best. Like MCDonalds, they may sell the most hamburgers/cruises but that does not mean they are of the best quality.

I HATE CARNIVAL!

I really hate Carnivel since she starts to buy other traditional companies. When she bought Costa i hated she even more, specilally because i'm a italian cruise fan. People say that exist competition, but RCCL and NCL America is all the same ... to me, the same kind of ships (more than 100.000gt), same decoration (horrible, if you want to see a casino, go to Las Vegas) and the worst, in these companies you are just one single passenger, thats mean MASS MARKET. I think there aren't almost single companies (Fred Olsen, Phoenix Reisen, Louis, MSC...?), it's all a big monopoly, with Carnival leading, and RCCL and NCL very near. In the future, maybe Carnival buy NCL and RCCL, and finnally we could say that exist a monopoly, but since now exist one, the AMERICAN MASS MARKET CRUISE.

PS.: I think i writed it wright, did i...?

Here in the States, that soup usually has a rich broth w/plently of onions, bread of some sort and plenty of baked cheese. What we received was warm onion broth, 1 small piece of bread and sprinkled with dry Parmesan cheese-the rest of the dining room food was little better. The cruise was free as a friend took 30 of us on it for his 30th birthday so what could we say?? Times change and I understand their food and interior design has improved greatly over the years, but we will stay w/Princess, HAL, Crystal and Cunard.

Ah, the joys of cruise industry Sloanism. Provided it's done right, they will be laughing all the way to the bank for some time. On the other hand, I could see Princess and Carnival overlapping somewhat- it'd be a tremendous shame if the former went the way of Oldsmobile...

I was actually once onboard Arcadia during a pre Christmans cruise which was dumped on the dutch market. and indeed there was a huge group of loud badly behaving Dutch....to me just as irritating.

By the way we do not have tabloid News channels here in Norway and as far as news I watch our own NRK and BBC. And I despise tabloid newspapers, for example when in the UK I read the Guardian!!

I think people hate Carnival because:

  • They (Carnival Corp plc.) own most of the cruise lines.
  • They are somewhat ‘tacky’.
  • They have badly designed cookie-cutter ships.
  • They attract mass-market ‘trailer-park trash’.

Am I right?
