MSC’s New York itineraries are shaping up
December 22, 2005

MSC Cruises will likely kick off its year-round deployment from New York with positioning cruises from Florida to Montreal then Montreal to New York in April 2007, the company’s USA president and ceo, Rick Sasso, told Seatrade Insider.

The Lirica-class ship – likely MSC Opera, Sasso said -- will then begin 11-day Caribbean programs from New York. The itinerary is still being finalized, but Sasso hopes to include Cayo Levantado, the emerging out island in the Dominican Republic. Cayo Levando earned rave reviews from passengers during MSC’s maiden call last week [see next post].

MSC’s New York-based ship will also provide seven-day Bermuda cruises in 2007. ‘And sprinkled in there might also be Canada,’ Sasso said. ‘That’s the broad stroke. It will be a few weeks before we pin it all down.’

New Caribbean out island is a ‘10’
December 22, 2005

With the passenger ratings in from the first ship call at the newly developed Cayo Levantado, MSC Cruises USA’s Rick Sasso is calling the Caribbean out island a ‘10.’

‘This is going to be one of the better out islands in the business,’ president and ceo Sasso told Seatrade Insider. He said passengers on last week’s MSC Lirica cruise made glowing comments about the beach, the water, the food and the facilities.

Developed by Bahia Cruises, a Dominican Republic company, Cayo Levantado is located off the Samana Peninsula on the island’s northeast coast. Bahia Cruises holds a long-term lease for the cay and installed new beach chairs, umbrellas, bars, a dining facility, toilets and acres of walking paths.

‘It’s been built up to be a really high-end out island experience,’ Sasso said. ‘This is going to be good for MSC. People are going to rave about this.’

Cayo Levantado is open to all operators but MSC Cruises already has booked some 20 calls by the MSC Lirica and MSC Opera for this season.

In addition to out island activities, varied excursions are available from and around the Samana Peninsula. MSC offers tours including a Jeep safari, a trek to a waterfall in the mountains with horseback riding, a speed boat excursion to a national bird sanctuary, a catamaran and snorkeling adventure and, starting in late January, whale-watching by boat.

Looks like MSC will send the Lirica to NYC around May 18, 2007.
Smooth sailing MSC.

Too bad the MSC Opera wasn't the vessel of choice for MSC in NYC as she has more regular balcony cabins. MSC Lirica is configured with suite balcony cabins at the higher per diem.
I wonder what Bermuda stops they'll make as it looks like Thursday to Thursday cruises so far?

Does anyone else think they will switch the year round New York sailings to the MSC Opera instead of the MSC Lirica? I think the Carnival Freedom will be doing year round NYC departures to compete.

I work in the travel business and someone who works in the cruise industry just told me too that the Cranival Freedom sounds like she is headed for NY. Sounds interesting! We shall see!

(from NY Cruiser)

Did you mean Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas?

She would be too big for BDA however and BDA has their caution for carnival visits anyway.

No it was the Cranival Freedom. I had heard some rumors that she was to sail out of NYC year round. Who knows but it doesnt seem that unlikely. The Freedom of the seas is scheduled to do the milk run route of the Westeern Caribbean.
