Cunard unleashes new pet perks
February 15, 2006

Recognizing what it calls a growing trend of traveling with pets, Cunard Line enhanced its ‘Pets on Deck’ program, including adding services and amenities such as fresh-baked biscuits at turn-down, a choice of beds and blankets, and even a QM2-logo coat.

Queen Mary 2's kennel program is overseen by a full-time kennel master who takes care of feeding, walking and cleaning the ship's 12 kennels.

As part of the enhanced program, dogs and cats also receive a complimentary gift pack featuring a QM2-logo coat, Frisbee, name tag, food dish and scoop; a complimentary portrait with pet owners; a crossing certificate and personalized cruise card. Other pet perks include an assortment of toys, cat posts and scratchers, and a selection of top-brand premium pet foods.

The kennels and adjacent indoor and outdoor walking areas are open throughout the day. Kennel reservations may be made at time of booking; the fee ranges from $300 to $500.

It's not April the 1st yet, is it?

I did not get a fresh-baked biscuit at turn-down, a choice of beds and blankets, and a QM2-logo coat.

It is certainly a 'dogs life'!

Very interesting!

I had 2 Cruises on Cunards Crown Dynasty in 1994, an good Experience.

Starting Ft. Lauderdale and go to Acapulco, the second was from Acapulco to Ft. Lauderdale with some other Ports.

At that Time without my Rottweiler "Zeus".

Now, Zeus is dead, but i have an young Rottweiler Dog at the Moment, "Tyson".

I should ask him, if he would like to do an Cruise with my Wife and me.

This is an very good Idea of Cunard, cruising with the most beloved Person.

An Dog is the best Friend, i prefer him before any Humans.

I am not quite sure what is any different? QM2 already carries pets across the Atlantic, and that is all they are advertising afaics. It doesn't say they will permit cruises, only mentions crossing. I personally do not wish to see pets aboard cruising, that is selfishness on behalf of the owners imo. Travelling across the Atlantic is a different matter, it's better than flying for the animals.

Of course, cruising is better for Peds than flying, because they are in the Airplane's Freight Room in an little Box.

But i do not Cruise with my Dog, he has an Place in the Animals Home in Dachau, near to Munich, from there i get him, and so he goes for some Days or Weeks back to his former Home and the People, who treat him there, before i took him.

On Holidays with our Car, made in Hotels, we take the Dog with us.

A lot of Hotels in Austria accept Dogs in the Room, when we make Holiday in the Mountains.

I prefer Austria, since i was a Child of 5 or 6, at that Time together with my Parents and my Brother.

Now together with my Wife and the Dog.

I do not go to Austria in Winter, because we make no Winter-Sports, but in Spring, Summer and Autumn it is our favourite Destination for Holiday in the Alps.

Am I right in thinking the QM2 has just two of those 'bellboys' which they only role out for photocalls?

I saw Rod Stewart and his wife boarding the QM2 and two bellboys carried their hand luggage. No one carried mine.

This is strange. Isn`t this the usual procedure on nearly any ship? (I remeber that I usually have to hinder them to take all things I carry with me (do not even think about touching my camera )- also when I have been aboard QE2 or other 'Cunard' vessels)

Yes, on even the budget cruise lines, usually there are cabin stewards to greet embarking passengers and take them to their rooms.

On my 3 sailings aboard QM2, however, I always remarked that boarding guests are left to find their way to their rooms, with no one to even direct them! Strange.

If you want to be escorted to your cabin on QM2, all you have to do is ask. Staff are usually lined up when you board and will escort you if requested. I saw a few elderly women ask and the staff where very helpful taking hand baggage etc. Some passengers don't want the added service and choose to find their suite/cabin on their own.

It is a BIG difference between being asked or having to ask for something.

Being asked even if you - to stay with this example - do not need asisstance with your bags is a friendy gesture and you feel looked after. Also, someone who is able to carry the bag might never have the idea to ask for assistance but might still accept such an offer (and like the service) - this 'detail' is the difference between good and bad service.

I was just joking, I know what you meant. The funny this is that on all the cruises I have been on in the last 10-15 years, I don't think anyone has offered to take my hand held bag(s). I have been asked if I knew how to get to my cabin, but no one has offered to carry my bags. Now that I think about it, the bag boy at the grocery store offers to take my groceries (no matter if I have two or three items) out to my car and does not expect a tip!

Me too! It is particularly unlikely on a mega-ship.

I wonder which lines Ernst gets this service.
