Celebrity Press Release - It seems Cruise Ship names get no better....

Celebrity Cruises Orders Second Ship in New Solstice Class

MIAMI, Feb. 16 - Celebrity Cruises has exercised its option to order a second 118,000 gross-registered-ton ship today, reaffirming its commitment to innovative products and high guest satisfaction. German shipbuilder Meyer Werft will build the new tonnage, with delivery of the first ship planned for Fall 2008 and the second ship in Summer 2009. Celebrity also announced names of both new ships.

The first new ship will be called Celebrity Solstice, and the second ship will be named Celebrity Equinox. The new series of ships will be known as the Solstice class. Terms for the second Solstice-class vessel are substantially the same as those of the first ship.

Both new ships will be 2,850-guest vessels measuring 1,033 feet in length and 121 feet in width. Their added size will allow Celebrity to offer larger standard staterooms, a higher percentage of balconies and an exceptional range of guest-inspired services and amenities.

"The Solstice-class ships accelerate the tremendous growth and excitement that continues to build with this brand," said Richard D. Fain, chairman and CEO of parent company Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. "We owe a lot of our inspiration to guests and travel partners, and we think they will be enormously pleased with this collaboration. We also thank our shipbuilding partner, Meyer Werft, for working with us to produce so many of our beautiful ships."

"Meyer Werft is proud to be a part of Celebrity Cruises' continued growth," said Meyer Werft Managing Partner Bernard Meyer. "These new ships demonstrate Celebrity's tradition of breakthrough design and leading innovations."

Are the actually going to call them "Celebrity" Solstice and "Celebrity" Equinox. I hope they do not go the Carnival route and throw the line name in front of each ships name. It sounds so stupid...

Interesting that "Solstice" and "Equinox" are the names of new vehicles produced by General Motors in the past year!

Maybe Celebrity are trying to tap into the 'old Hippie' market?

Well at least Celebrities names are more original that say 'Celebrity Jewel' or 'Celebrity Freedom'.

I agree. While the names are not perfect, just be thankful they are not CELEBRITY SPIRIT, CELEBRITY LEGEND, CELEBRITY PRIDE, CELEBRITY FREEDOM, or CELEBRITY LIBERTY.

As you can see, it could be MUCH worse!

This must be more than coincidance. Certainly someone at RCI/Celebrity realized they were taking car names from GM. Maybe we can expect more Chevy and Pontiac names for future Celebrity ships?

As odd as this naming link may be, overall I like the names. I'm just glad its something different. For that reason I've always like Celebrity's names.

The names aren't that bad but I kind of thought they would name the ship Hemisphere, Universe. Equinox remoinds me of a chain of upscale gyms that are in the NYC metro area

I suppose they sound upmarket (upscale), which is of course part of Celebrities branding.

I think this are VERY PROPER names for ships. (personally, I think better than most other Celebrity names)

- a name with a meaning and no artifical word
- a theme which is related to astronomy / navigation
- No brand name as part of the name
- they are pretty unique: no other passenger has / had this name or a version of it

Pretty soon we will see EQUINOX PRINCESS or CARNIVAL SOLSTICE

I really like the names Celebrity comes up with. I can't wait to see more on these two ships.

recab suggested "M/S" and that is probably what it will be (or M/V). I don't think Celebrity/Royal Caribbean have plans for anymore GTS vessels. In fact they are working on technology to re-engine or somehow transform the existing GTS ships to traditional diesel. I believe the MILLENNIUM is the first to undergo this "transformation". If successful, the remainder of the GTS fleet will be reconfigured.

RCI/Celebrity really took a chance when ordering all GTS ships, and I applaud them for being innovative and forward thinking. Unfortunately this decision really came back to bite them where it hurts the most, the pocketbook.

It is not a matter of what kind of engine is better. But today´s fuel costs have made it a necessity.
And as eroller writes, the ML will be first out with the new combined engines.

It IS a matter which enginer is better. (=also lower fuel consumption) But there is no general awnser - this depends a lot on the 'problem'.

If it is a matter of which type is best, I prefer the gas turbines. RCCL must have thought so too, since they equipped 8 vessels with this type of machinery.
