For those snobs among us, and I most emphatically include myself, I propose the establishment of a special listing in these pages. No, not another Midships Lounge. I propose a listing of those of us who prefer to associate with "the right sort!"

In order to establish an appropriate level of effeteness, I shall, of course, propose a French Name. It shall be..........[drumroll offstage left]

"Le Societe des amis de Vapeur"

[I hereby request French members of this page to correct my spelling, and keyboard permitting, introduce the appropriate diacritical accents at the appropriate places]

Membership will be limited to those who have traveled on a vessel propelled by a certified thermal external combustion power source.

Beyond this simple requirement, there are no limitations. Troopships, ferries, tripple expansion powered vessels, steam turbines, are all included. Sidewheel, sternwheel, conventional propellors, are also included.

Excluded are motor vessels all types; sailing vessels; or any ship which relies on an internal combustion engine for any component of its propulsion system. Allowed are those vessels which may use internal combustion power plants for auxiliary services.

Members may post their eligibility for membership in this entity upon these pages. Vessel, type, propulsion system and date of travel are requested.

My application for membership accoding to the requirments posted above:

Atlas, passenger ship, geared turbines/ one propeller, summer 1983
Enrico C., passenger ship, geared turbines/ two propellers, summer 1984

(If I remeber right all other vessels I sailed with did not (anymore) have a steam propulsion plant (when I travelled with them) - not listing smaller excursion vessels (daytrips only) - and visited vessels - but these two should be sufficient. )

Looking forward to a positive awnser,

Ernst

I'll also apply for membership, having sailed in dozens of passenger steamships during the 1980s, including Norway, Carnivale, Mardi Gras, Festivale, Britanis, Regent Sun, Amerikanis, Oceanic, Canada Star, Galileo, The Victoria, Independence, Statendam '57, Rotterdam '59, QE2 pre-'87, etc., etc.

Literally dozens of sailings were made on the first six ships mentioned; the others were mostly one-off cruises. Exact dates and cabin numbers can be provided as part of my resume.

I have nothing against such threads - they can be fun - so don`t take it too seriouse - no reason to be upset!

As Cambodge and Rich said,
When applying for membership. Don't we need to show a identify stuff such as photo(s) or a Cruise Report in these days.
I would like to hear a Cruise Report if photo is not available.

The photo taken on the Iberia in July, 1966.

Can I join? Pretty please!

Qualifying ships travelled on:

Wolfe Islander...ferry (pre-1956). Single screw steamship running between Kingston, Ontario and Wolfe Island.

African Enterprise Farrell Lines, NY. Single screw steamship. Brooklyn, NY to Durban, Union of South Afriica. 1955

Queen Elizabeth 2 Cunard Liine. Twin screw steamship. Numerous transatlantic crossings and cruises prior to emasuclation of power plant in 1986-87 refit.

Oceanic Home Lines. Twin screw steamship 2 cruises, 1978.

Qualifying ships visited but not sailed on:

Arundel Castle Union Castle Line. Twin screw steam turbine powered Mailship. Toured in Port Elizabeth, Union of South Africa, 1955. Once a four-funneled liner (one of only 14 built) but reduced to two funnels in 1937.

Galileo Galillei Italia Crociere Internazionale. Twin screw steamship. Toured in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 1980

Omitted from list are all wannabes using internal combustion engines. e.g. QE2 1987 and later. Also omitted are deep sea ferries of unknown or questionable propulsion, the names of which I cannot remember anyways.

Let's see if I qualify??

USS Ranger -- we had steam catapults for aircraft launches.

USS Yorktown--we had hydralic catapults for
aircraft launches.

All other ships were either oil or GTS systems-non qualifing cruise vessels

Let me know.

Minor spelling correction, that would be:

"La Société des Amis de la Vapeur" if you mean "The Society of the Friends of Steam"
or
"La Société des Amis des Vapeurs" if you mean "The Society of the Friends of the Steamers"

By the way, I apply to membership for sailings on aircraft carriers CLEMENCEAU and FOCH in 1986, 1987 and 1988, USS ENTERPRISE in 1988 and NORWAY in 1998.
Have toured USS EISENHOWER in 1984, USS NIMITZ in 1985 and DUQUESNE in 1989 too.

Okay Cambodge, I have to ask. If I'm going along with this, is this serious. Is this actually going to be a new members only forum? Or is this just you trying to find out who's been on a ship and who hasn't?

It's just to see which steamships various members have been on or sailed. By the way, Barry, quite a few of your ships do not count!

We could also be extremely snobbish and add an Elite Level: those who have sailed aboard COAL-FIRED steamships. I have:
SS SPARTAN, 1966
SS BADGER, 1968
SS MILWAUKEE CLIPPER, 1970
SS CITY OF MIDLAND, 1981
