A friend of mine annonced that they want to visit easter Island. I'm not sure why?

To save me searching the Net, which cruise lines stop there?

M V Discovery calls overnight from noon on March 8th to 2pm on 9th 2007. Also 1pm on March 27th to 1pm on 28th. Sectors are 21 nights & 20 nights respectively. Can also be taken as part of longer sectors from 31 nights, 35 0r 44 to 60 nights all the way back to UK. Wish I could go as Bora bora is also on the list! Eric

Go here Malcolm for the ships calling at Easter Island. Besides those mentioned above, there is Silver Whisper, Aurora, Pacific Princess & Endeavour.

Here, is an interesting blog to read, with lovely photos.

Ferries? I don't think so.

Eric,
If you ever get to go to Bora Bora take the Mountain Safari excursion-better than any Disneyland ride,up to the old gun emplacements of WW2, beautiful panoramic scenery. A bit scary however .

We called at Easter Island in 2003 on Amsterdam when we did a segment of the World Cruise from Valparaiso to Sydney.We also called at Pitcairn.
I look on both of these calls as treasures I will remember forever.
Very few ships call at Easter Island now and when they do, they are at the mercy of the weather and sea swells as you anchor off shore and tender in.There are no protected bays for shelter and the "port" (more like a marina) is just an opening between the rocks.All tenders ,as well as having two crew members aboard, had a local pilot to guide them into the opening as the run in had to be timed with the way the sea was running.
Once ashore it is awesome.There is a strange "eerie" feel to the Island as the large Moai gaze down upon you.
Did you know that all those statues were placed with their backs to the sea?
It is very sobering to wander around and imagine the Island supporting the large population that it did and then to see it now almost deserted as a result of people plundering the envoironment.You can only marvel at these huge Moai and then realise that their very existence was the cause of depopulation,as to be transported to the shores from the hills were they were hewn, they needed trees to roll them on,but after they cut down all the trees the soil blew away and they could not grow crops.
A fascinating place,and anyone who gets the chance should not hesitate to go there.
Some ships only cruise by.I recall reading the P&O brochure and it said ..."see how many Moai you can spot from the deck as we sail by".....so if going by ship check on whether you go ashore or not,and also be prepared to arrive,stand off shore,and not be able to land due to the weather or sea conditions.
They do have an International Airport these days,courtesy of NASA,and I believe you can fly in from Tahiti or Chile.It used to be only once a week but the frequency has probably increased by now.
